What is WRONG with people? How can so many professionals have taken such leave of their senses and education? I don’t get it at all! There is no evidence base for it, how can they defend it so staunchly?

We're encouraged to think of the medical profession as dispassionate, or even heroic, but history is littered with examples of doctors doing terrible things for ideological reasons. Think of the family doctors and hospital staff all over the Third Reich who happily filled in the paperwork that would send their patients, mostly children, to the gas chamber. They believed they were doing a societal good. The medical profession can attract people who believe they are saving the world but exactly what they think that entails can be very scary.

But she said this care was made even more difficult to provide by the polarised public debate, and the way in which opposing sides had “pointed to research to justify a position, regardless of the quality of the studies”.
“There are few other areas of healthcare where professionals are so afraid to openly discuss their views, where people are vilified on social media, and where name-calling echoes the worst bullying behaviour. This must stop.

If we're going to reflect on this report honestly and objectively, we also need to own that this branch of Mumsnet has played a part in that polarisation of public debate.

Aye, you keep telling yourself that pal.

The Cass Review came a result from whistleblowers challenging power from institutions and from grassroots activism from women.

They can fuck off with this argument. Once again - reality.

This is the most shocking part to me.

They knew. They damn well knew.

I thought I wasn’t able to be shocked further to be honest, but reading that they stopped recording sex is utterly mind blowing. My god!

Igmum · 10/04/2024 11:04

Thank heavens it is so clear but yes, there are too many zealots still in the system

Jackiebrambles · 10/04/2024 11:04

@mrshoho your post made me feel emotional, massive well done to you and your daughter, I hope she continues to grow and feel better with your support.

I too have learnt so much from reading the caring, measured, clever and witty posts on this board. The women of mumsnet are magnificent.

Yes! I find this terrifying!
I recently met a GP in a social setting, and the subject of trans health came up (I wasn’t the only TERF there, there was quite a conversation).
I felt that trans health as TRAs want it puts trans people at risk, as there is no reference to their sex, only their gender, so invitations to sex based screenings may be missed, pregnancies may be missed etc. The GP was angry at this and adamant that trans people are whatever they say they are, and should be treated as such (he wasn’t Adrian Harrop - there are more like him!). The subject of the Cass review came up, and his stance was that whatever it reported he would be sticking to his guns and not changing his approach, and that he wasn’t alone.
I would hope that in light of the Cass review that personal opinions won’t have any place against well researched evidence.
In education I’m not sure as an institution that it’s robust enough to take the knocking that doubling down to ideological nonsense could cause.

Katy Montgomery on twitter having meltdown, claiming the Cass report to be corrupt....

I can only imagine how horrifying it must be to read in black and white the details of the sham of care that this person has undergone, he spewing the vitriol in every direction.

No evidence of harm. That is what he took from the review.

Seriously?

Does he have a trans family member, do we think?

I find this really shocking because when it comes to other issues such as Brexit he was much more rigorous.

Apparently evidence is only admissible when it supports his point of view.

WarriorN · 10/04/2024 10:40

A huge issue is going to be how various bits are cherry picked by different people

There needs to be serious scrutiny of schools and teachers unions next. Alarming to say the least that their response is to double down. Keeping secrets from parents should be illegal.

Re the feeble attempts to “both sides” this issue. Gender-critical women have NOT contributed to any so-called toxicity.
We never created a climate of fear. We didn’t cancel people or threaten to physically harm or sexually assault them. We didn’t wear masks, bang drums in police horses’ faces, punch elderly people, swear at babies, or carry placards saying “decapitate trans rights activists”. We just argued for our right to define women as females, as a reality-based sex class and not a magical feeling in someone’s head. We called for the preservation of single-sex spaces for reasons of safety, dignity and privacy. We wanted fairness in women’s sports and other competitive arenas. We argued for the safeguarding of children, and for them to be protected from unnecessary medical interventions.

Gender-critical women have been perfectly reasonable from day one. You can’t “both sides” this unless you have the receipts.

James O' Brien is being his usual obtuse, misogynistic and patronising self on LBC. I put it on just to see if he was mentioning the Cass review and had to switch it off again.

What was he saying before you switched off in digust?

I was clearly acting like a spammer

One thing that worries me about Cass: Lastly, the evidence base showing whether psychosocial interventions – therapy – work for those who do not undergo hormone treatment is “as weak” as for puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones.

I assume this means therapy not to affirm their ideas about being the opposite sex, but to help them come to terms with their own sex and their body and place in society etc. Does this mean it's likely that therapy isn't effective? Or just that there isn't (yet) enough data?

In general psychotherapy isn’t very effective on its own, and certainly not what is available via NHS as it’s so time constrained and very one size fits all.
Therapy available to children in the UK is hard to access and is basically useless. Many parents report their child’s mental health deteriorating under the “care” of CAMHS.
Aimed at teens hell bent on being the gender of their choosing (and I was an autistic teen once, the level of commitment to an obsession is phenomenal) I can’t see therapy being of any use at all.

This is the most shocking part to me.

They knew. They damn well knew.

I think there needs to be an enquiry into GIDs and how it operated and why the usual oversight in the NHS failed

If there are any children who have been harmed then people need to be held accountable.
