“Trans treatment waiting list a ‘death sentence’”

While the title of the thread is the main-page headline on the BBC website, the actual article is - rather less dramatically - titled Transgender patients could face years-long wait for NHS treatment.

It is so grossly offensive to suggest not getting cross sex hormones [paid for by the NHS] = fatal. There absolutely are delays in care that are fatal: people are (for example) dying of cancer, from [complications of] anorexia nervosa, & of treatable cardiac issues.

That coroners are legitimising this idea is ridiculous. In one case, the individual had accessed private care.

The suicides are of course tragic, but they show what’s needed is more investment in mental health services. Not to push the - completely false & irresponsible - narrative that trans people are doomed to die while waiting for treatment.

A coroner ruled the long waiting times to access gender care had directly contributed to her death

I'm shocked at this from the Cononer. How could they possibly state this as a fact? Did the Coroner actually say this or is it just the BBC reporting that they did

FrancescaContini · 20/03/2024 07:47

Wouldn’t expect anything less than panic-inducing hyperbole from the BBC on this issue.

Irresponsible reporting

I'm actually quite concerned about the expectations of some of the people in that article.

More than once they have a middle aged person saying that the long waiting list for surgery (they say this specifically) is preventing their transition.

They clearly have already transitioned - I worry that they think that surgery (presumably implants since most don't get genital surgery, but the same holds for genital surgery) is going to transform them in a way that is likely completely unrealistic.

I can't see how their mental health is likely to improve once the initial euphoria is past, and statistics seem to bear this out.

Yes I believe there was. TRAs don't care.

Journalistic responsibility.
Public service broadcaster responsibility.... the BBC should know not to do this.

Plasmodesmata · 20/03/2024 07:28

What did all the people featured in the article have in common?

ArabellaScott · 20/03/2024 07:24

If you strip away the outrageous activist hyperbole, I think this buried at the bottom of the article is the real news:

'"In 2024/25 the NHS will launch a timely review of the adult service specifications through a process of engagement with professional bodies, clinicians and academics, and patients and the public."

Wasn't there just a call from the head of Suicide Prevention to stop saying this sort of thing?

Can anyone tell me of any other surgical interventions considered appropriate for a mental health problem?

This Lobotomy 2.0 approach to a social contagion will not end well. How about we stop giving radical plastic surgeries to people rejecting healthy body parts and offer them exploratory therapy instead?

That article really annoyed me.

Mentally ill people need access to mental health treatment and shouldn't be waiting a long time for it in case they commit suicide. Being transgender shouldn't trump other people's right to access any health treatment.

Although I thought it was interesting that it was suggesting a lack of surgical intervention was the problem not lack of mental health care.

The BBC ramping up the rhetoric post puberty blocker decision

They can join the many other TRAs and genderists on SM who are stepping up their reaction

JellySaurus · 20/03/2024 07:03

Impartial reporting 🤔

stealtheatingtunnocks · 20/03/2024 07:03

“Give me what I want or I’ll kill myself” is seen as an abusive tactic.

ButterflyTulips · 20/03/2024 07:00

Hmm yes I saw that on BBC.

Its all logically nonsensical isn't it.
