Despite all the recent WPATH revelations and everythign else we now know Angela Eagle has just tweeted that the next Labour government will:

  • Legislate for a trans-inclusive conversion therapy ban
  • Make anti-LGBT+ hate crime an aggravated offence *Modernise Gender Recognition processes
  • Appoint an international LGBT+ envoy

My bigger concern (from a GC point of view) is that they will form a coalition with the Lib dems and/or the Greens.

Greens have one MP - and given our UK parliament is first past the post system I personally don't see that changing - so don't see a coalition there happening.

Lib dems I do agree are a concern - however third biggest current party is SNP - how they'll fare next general election is uncertain.

There are in current parliament more independents MP 19 than Lib dems -15 seats and while they hope to do better who know how that will pan out as there last coalition gov screwed them electorally for years I wonder who keen they'd actually be.

I do remember the small number of DUP MP propping up John Majors government and the disproportionate influence they manged - so it is a concern.

Same.

A nightmare frankly. If they change the law to women's disfavour we will never get those rights back.

TBH i don't think Labour is going to win outright. Even from the non-GC lens they are not seen as serious candidates. Too polarised internally and the stench of Corbyn is still there.

And I repeat what I said upthead. The state of politicians and political parties of all stripes right now. They are a disgrace. They shame this great country and all of us.

I sincerely wish they would cop the fuck onto themselves.

Froodwithatowel · 09/03/2024 12:42

Also worth considering priming up the opposition. We've barely had one through the last government, but there's a number of issues on which a decent opposition could hold a ruling government strongly to account.

Floisme · 09/03/2024 12:21

I do think we'll end up with a Labour government but I think it's how big their majority is - a smaller one and more MP with marginal seats and I think chances of them listening to criticism about polices that affect 51-52% of the population will be higher. So I'm not going to be finger wagged at about my vote.
I guess there are 3 possibilities to weigh up:
A huge majority - they won't have to listen to anyone.
A much smaller majority than they're expecting - small enough to give them the fright of their lives.
No overall majority, leaving them having to cobble together a deal with other centre left parties and Starmer waiting for a knife in the back from Angela Rayner.

At the moment, I think the first scenario is a bit of an unknown - the last time they won a big majority the country was in a very different state and the political mood far more optimistic than it is now. I'd find the second scenario the most palatable of the 3. But the third possibility is the one I dread the most and one that might persuade me to vote Labour.

This is why I won't be deciding my vote until much nearer the time, although I'm now checking out the alternatives.

EasternStandard · 09/03/2024 12:20

If it wasn’t for the gender ideology stuff which I think is almost impossible to reverse, and I don’t want to do that to dd, I’d say try out Labour so people can stop fantasising about a 90s type flash back and see the reality

Spendonsend · 09/03/2024 12:16

I'm not convinced labour will win and if they do win i agree people are going to be very disappointed that its not a spending spree with lots of improvements. Its a rearranging deck chairs on the titanic situation in my mind.
Who is going to talk about managed decline.

RhubarbGingerJam · 09/03/2024 12:08

I agree there's some blind tribalism but I do think others are just desperately hopeful and unwilling to face where we are because politicians aren't having those big conversations with electorate - and when they do try like Theresa May during her election campaign and social care funding it doesn't go well.

I do agree when they are in managing expectations will be a massive issue for them - which they'll mostly deal with by blaming Tory's (both apt and standard for all governments) and hope that and disarray in opposition parties gets them a second term.

Froodwithatowel · 09/03/2024 11:57

I do suspect due to this that should Labour get in, they will quickly find themselves with a very angry electorate.

WaterWeasel · 09/03/2024 11:54

Reading some threads especially on NHS and schools I think it worse people aren't listening or paying attention to what Labour is actually sayingbut assuming or hoping they'll do what they did in last government -despite very different demographics and economics - or what they want and god forbid you mention Wales - even if you live there like I do

Yes there is a blind tribalism about these posters. They are in for a massive shock imo but it will be far too late by then.

Did I just read on an FWR board that potholes are more important than women's rights?

More litter bins would be nice too.

Froodwithatowel · 09/03/2024 11:47

The trouble is though that there is zero accountability for a manifesto. It'll say whatever sounds good, it's marketing patter. The stuff that will scare the horses won't go on it, and whatever sops are thrown won't have to be adhered to. It's not like we live in a time of integrity, political values, a sense of public service or even basic rationality in our political figures.

Ignore the words, watch the actions. Over the past 5 years.

RhubarbGingerJam · 09/03/2024 11:47

Labour are also telling people what they want to hear. That's the exact nature of politics. In the end it comes down to what you can't look past.

I've voted Labour in the past but I don't think they can count on my vote next time - doesn't mean I'm voting Tory.

The time to argue with Labour is now, before they fix their manifesto promises in the run up to a general election.

Exactly. Why on earth surrender the only bargaining chip you've got - your vote - before you have to?

(Although I fear their manifesto is probably already at the printers)

emmsee · 09/03/2024 11:15

WaterWeasel · 09/03/2024 11:05

Much rather argue, campaign and demonstrate on this issue with a Labour government than this lot who will tell you whatever you want to hear in order to stay in power

Good fucking luck with that.

Yeah I've already had my own labour candidate go red in the face and talk over me, interrupting the woman with him who I was having a conversation with.

His none apology was very reminiscent the the Russel Moyle one, almost word for word, saying he gets quite passionate about these things (but don't worry he's got a daughter and wouldn't let anything bad happen to her). I don't know if he'd cribbed the apology on purpose to add insult to injury or whether they're just cut from the same cloth but either way he's lost my vote and that of my husband, mother etc....

I don't care who bought it in . The whole issue is not one I am prepared to risk this horrid bunch of incompetent shysters getting in again on .

The NHS
SEN education provision
Education in general
Courts backlog is HORRIFIC
Care for the elderly.
Fucking POTHOLES !!

Basically EVERYTHING they have driven into the ground whilst lining their own pockets comes WAY ahead of someone telling me he is a 'woman' ..

Much rather argue, campaign and demonstrate on this issue with a Labour government than this lot who will tell you whatever you want to hear in order to stay in power .

Do you not recall the promises of the sunlit uplands they promised with BREXIT ... they lie !! Then lie again ..

Do you HONESTLY BELIEVE any promise they make if no longer expedient to do so ...

The ONLY reason a Tory is interested in supporting the anti trans lobby is because it's just about the ONLY thing that they think will get them a vote ..

The moment one of them has shares in a new miracle drug that can make a man lactate and breastfeed .. they will be changing their pronouns faster than they change mistresses . You are being had .

I agree and will be looking to vote independent if at all possible - if not I shall spoil with one of Posie's stickers (again). I cannot vote for the shit show that is either the Labour or Tory parties at the moment. I could not have that on my conscience tbh.

I'm another who is politically homeless and am hoping for a suitable independent, including a Party of Women one.

I don't know if there is an official website that is listing all prospective candidates but I've been keeping an eye on the Wikipedia page: 'Candidates in the next United Kingdom general election' over the last few months. The page seems to be being kept up to date with a single list for the whole of the UK as candidates are being announced, including independents, so it might be a useful starting place for anyone looking to see what is happening in their area. (Obviously Wikipedia isn't a reliable source but it might be a start.)
