Has anyone seen this recent article on the transgender (trans woman) Scarlett Blake who was sentenced to 24 years today for murdering a man. Blake also killed a cat. Pls see this recent article from bbc news. BBC news puts nowhere in article that Blake is transgender. Uses pronouns ‘she’ and refers to Blake as a woman.

bbc article here https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-oxfordshire-68401335

These are not our crimes. I am reporting the omission of the fact Blake is transgender to Ofcom. I wonder if anyone is thinking the same (about reporting to ofcom, here is the link: https://www.ofcom.org.uk/complaints )

Make a complaint

Ofcom may be able to help you complain about phone, broadband and postal services, TV, radio and on-demand programmes, interference to wireless devices, or something you have seen on a video-sharing platform.

It should always be recorded by biological sex, however I think it's also relevant to record the transgender identity of both victims and perpetrators, so any patterns in the data can be observed.

I personally think that once a crime is committed and sentencing reported they should be referred to in their biological sex by authorities and news outlets rather than whatever they choose.

Both victims and perpetrators. Biological sex should be used in all official capacities.

@ArabellaScott thread in AIBU demonstrates that this was happening on Friday when he was convicted and has carried on until the sentencing today. People following the court case only found out for sure (though many people suspected) when Blake himself was on the stand.

I wonder if they get sentenced as harshly as women for murder? I seem to remember people get foamy mouthed at female murderers and they get longer sentences. I know women are imprisoned for things men get community service for (food theft etc). I guess the more of these that happen the more data we will have.

Curious if OP also takes the same approach with ethnic minorities or perhaps the disabled. If they commit crimes, does she also require a disclaimer because they’re not “her” crimes?

Don't be silly. Scarlet Blake is a man. Not a woman. The media needs to tell the truth.

I couldn’t care less if someone I’ve never met is the same gender as me or not. Utterly immaterial.

There are many fair arguments and issues around trans, but this is just weird bigotry.

Do explain how you know the OP is not from an ethnic minority background or doesn't have a disability?

Quite some assumptions you made there.

Weird whataboutery.

How does it slander women?

By making it look like a woman killed a cat and a human when in fact a man did.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 26/02/2024 19:07

Women don't commit crimes like that' So you've never heard of Myra Hindley, Beverly Allitt, Lucy Letby, the various female guards at Nazi concentration camps et al

Female murderers overall, let alone sexual sadists, are extremely rare. Most evidence suggests that MTFs have a male pattern of crime.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 26/02/2024 19:06

To be angry that Scarlet Blake is being called a woman. http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/amiibeingunreasonable/5014437-to-be-angry-that-scarlet-blake-is-being-called-a-woman

And there they are, the naysayers - right on cue.

Yes it does fucking matter @AllGrownUp1465. These hideous acts are being recorded as having been committed by a woman when they were committed by a man and are typically male crimes. Women seldom commit crimes anything like these.

Our history is being altered by these wretches. Our future is being compromised by these devils.

Don't tell me it doesn't matter.

Women would prefer not to be blamed for gruesome sexual crimes that men have committed. I can’t claim to speak for all women but I supect most would agree with me.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 26/02/2024 19:03

I think that's true, but they are obviously misrepresenting the truth by referring to him as a woman (and his "girlfriend" in America who he was trying to impress who stitched him up who is also a man) and they are going to be called out on it. Interesting to see what will happen now.

I feel like the media outlets have used woman as clickbait as it is such a shocking story for a female to have done this. If this story was reported as male, it would have been missed in the thousands of other violent crimes committed by men.

Yes I agree with this. They have included the facts about him being biologically male right at the bottom to keep people reading/on the site longer. As most people reading will go ‘wow this is an unusual crime for a woman…..ahhh’

Worth remembering that his placement in a male prison has only happened because of a massive campaign from women - especially KPSS - to get these dangerous men out of women's prisons. The trans captured MoJ had been leading the charge to wedge all of them into the women's estate. They still have a "no male with convictions for violence / sex crimes - except in very special circumstances that we won't explain but will use whenever the transactivists in the MoJ decide they want a "special" violent man in prison with women"

Infuriating and unforgivable.

This.

I mean, there are bigger things to worry about and they’ve already changed it. Seems like a non-issue 😵‍💫

What's bigger than stopping women's history being incorrect?
Why should women be tarred with mens crimes?

Saltandpeppero · 26/02/2024 18:59

VitoCorleoneOfMNMafia · 26/02/2024 18:52

You couldn't be more racist or ablist if you tried.

Men commit over 90% of violent crimes and over 98% of sexual offending. The difference in offending rates between different racial groups is so small as to be statistical noise and is negligible in practice. Disabled people are more likely to be assaulted than to commit assault.

Comparing sex to race is racist. Comparing sex to disability is ablist. And both are sexist.

Edited

Yeah, however you stand on this issue I don’t even get the comparison that poster is making.

The equivalence would more be if they were reporting say a white killer and stating it was a black person or vice versa.

Or portraying a crime committed by a non-disabled person, as one committed by a disabled person.

Also by asking OP if she would want a disclaimer that those aren’t her crimes, she’s effectively assumed the Op is not an ethnic minority or disabled herself.

Murder is a majority-male crime. This report makes it look like a woman did it when in fact a man did. This slanders women as a class.

They mentioned it then because her being trans was a main issue and cause in her death. This is not a trans issue which is why it’s not mentioned. It’s murder plain and simple.

Exactly, when the victim is transgender it all very clearly stated. But when a perpetrator is, they seem to try and hide it - like as though it doesn't fit with the 'most vulnerable' narrative.

But they’re not reporting incorrectly. They are reporting about the CRIME not the person.

Reporting on the crime includes reporting on the perp and victims. There is a public interest in reporting being accurate.

Saltandpeppero · 26/02/2024 18:55

It does say this : The Ministry of Justice said Blake, who is transgender, would serve the sentence in a men's prison

Male. It's been mentioned on the thread.
