I'm not sure why you keep making all these childish jibes at other women then. I'm sure they care as much about what you think as you do about what they do.

What childish jibes?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 22/02/2024 13:11

You're in your 40s. So am I. We are both middle aged. It's just life. As you say, who cares.

PP82 · 22/02/2024 13:11

Ereshkigalangcleg · 22/02/2024 13:09

Quite.

Fair play. Can't deny that. But I wouldn't want to be anywhere near the type of people I moved abroad to get away from.

I imagine they regard you, a middle aged British woman, very much the same as they would regard any other middle aged British woman @PP82

Everyone on mumsnet thinks they are middle aged when they hit 35. It's tragic.

Anyway, who cares. I don't care how others regard me, only that I have the rights and status of a Spanish citizen.

Only one person said they would have to hold their noses at 'other Brits'.

Quite.

Jesus. What an insulting, patronising and misinformed set of generalisations. 'Earthy people.' What does that mean? Have you ever even been here?

You clearly don't read posts properly. I said I've lived there.

I have close family there. I visit several times a year. I speak fluent Spanish. I'm quite knowledgeable about the country, its culture, history and politics. I love the country, but it's pretty sexist. You have also made patronising generalisations on this thread.

No one would deny that sexism still runs through Spanish society, but things are moving in the right direction, and lots of positive things have been happening recently, particularly under the current government.

Unlike the UK, which has gone back 150 years in the last 14.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 22/02/2024 13:03

People opposed to gender self ID said it would boost the Vox vote and usher in a PP/Vox government. In fact the Vox vote plummeted and we held on to our progressive coalition.

Because rejecting gender identity politics came together with other, less palatable things.

I can assure you Brits Abroad lager lout is very far from the mental image I had.

Hardly anyone in Spain cares about your luxury beliefs and identity politics. They are a pretty earthy people, and certainly aren't confused about what a woman is. As a pp said, it's a sexist society.

Spain is split on these issues, like everywhere is in the current political climate. People opposed to gender self ID said it would boost the Vox vote and usher in a PP/Vox government. In fact the Vox vote plummeted and we held on to our progressive coalition.

There is still sexism in Spanish society of course, but as a woman my legal rights are far better protected here in all sorts of ways.

Being in a position of trust and authority is not the same as sharing a changing room or toilet. Obviously.

My question though was not about changing rooms specifically, though a known paedophile in a ladies’ public lavatory in a supermarket with a child is an obvious concern ( it has happened in the U.K.);

or about how a paedophile transwoman can gain the trust of a child to get into ‘her’ car, because the child thinks a woman is safe, (after which the child is kidnapped and sexually abused for days as happened in Scotland)

  • it is particularly a concern that a change of identity, name and looks can be used to hide past crimes and aid access to an enhanced opportunity for more criminal activity. So it is pretty obvious that there should be no self ID for criminals.

I wonder if Spain is also doing what we do here and recording Machismo crimes on the women’s crime list?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 22/02/2024 12:56

You get:

New documents in your new identity
New birth certificate lying that you were born female (or male for FTM)
Special DBS process that is questionably not as robust
New NHS number
The ability to get people in authority prosecuted (even jailed) for "outing" you as not a woman

Ereshkigalangcleg · 22/02/2024 12:49

Ereshkigalangcleg · 22/02/2024 12:47

In the U.K. you get a completely different identity in every way. It's not just a change of name.

PP82 · 22/02/2024 12:46

Ereshkigalangcleg · 22/02/2024 12:40

I'm very confused as to how it would make the slightest difference whether a convicted paedophile changed their legal gender or not.

Because it's harder to monitor them if they "change sex" and get a completely different identity.

I'm not sure what mechanisms are in place for that situation, but if they aren't sufficient they could certainly be made to be so without changing the law on self id.

And you don't have to change your gender to change your name.

But Spain is a hugely diverse country, with significant differences between regional languages and cultures.

I've lived in different countries, different continents. I've never found that nationality has been a factor in terms of understanding or relating to others at anything more than the most superficial level.

It's all gone very 'blood and soil' here hasn't it. How enormously surprising.

While I agree there is no reason for anyone not to immigrate, or get on marvellously with the people in a new country, what I find surprising is that you seem to believe you will have as much in common with Spanish people in general as they would among each other.

Yes, they have great regional and educational variations and one societal group there may not share much in common with another, but still there is likely to be a barrier between you and them unless you have lived there most of your life and are completely fluent in Spanish and very widely read. Even then there will be a trace of ‘other’.

Just as there will most likely be some feelings of distinction and otherness between one region and another, there would be an even greater degree of this between a ‘Spaniard’ ( not Basque) in general and a non Spaniard.

This not to say you might not be welcomed with open arms!

Im just extrapolating from your posts, you know, like you decided @pronounsbundlebundle was some sort of Brits Abroad lager lout, but of course all Spanish people see you as somehow different, apart from the "insular old people" whose village you moved to, of course.

I made no such assumption about the PP. I simply said that I doubted anyone in Spain would care about their one person boycott. I can assure you Brits Abroad lager lout is very far from the mental image I had.

4 years ago someone made some factual biological statements about a trans identifying man

He called him "“prototype of a faggot with tits" - not sure I would describe that as a factual biological statement.

That is an unpleasant thing to call someone, I’ll grant you that but:

Other messages that were found to be criminally transphobic included her stating that “there are only two sexes,”

Stating that there are only two sexes is a biological fact.

Would you feel the same loosening of rules around safeguarding should apply in all cases say with police checks on teachers?

I wonder if Spain allows self ID for known/convicted paedophiles? I hope not.

What if everyone takes the piss then? You know, just because they can? What if all the organisations and resources meant for "trans" people go to men like the soldier and lots of the boring middle aged non glittery people that you despise claiming to be "non binary" for a laugh?

Where did I say that I despised boring middle aged non glittery people?

Or indeed that non glittery people were boring?
