That's coming from a place of extreme privilege. And WE'RE the ones with 'luxury beliefs?'

You have no idea of what level of privilege, if any, I have! So don’t be silly.

Surely you want robust mental health for all?

What do you think is better - a) going through life like a straw in the wind, victim to anybody’s partial opinion of us, reacting to it and becoming upset and disempowered, or b) having a strong sense of self and enough resilience to withstand criticism or not being liked and emerging still in a health place?

(Hint: a) is the state that will help you through life.

Well that’s a bit of a reach! Nice try 😉 👌

I think it’s more we need to have a think across the board and have a level playing field on it. If we decide we’re going to criminalise any calling of rude names to anybody who might be vulnerable, that needs to operate across the board, as Puzzled says. So calling women ‘slapper’, ‘tart’, ‘old bag’ etc needs to be criminalised too. There can’t be fear or favour under the law. Though clearly, there currently is. It’s not acceptable though.

I believe sending such communications via social media is a criminal offence in the UK. Rarely prosecuted or even investigated sure, but criminal nonetheless.

So it seems like some on here are SO keen to be free to abuse trans people, that they want to do away with hate crime laws altogether. And you wonder why people associate you with the far right?

A healthy level of self -respect and the ability to self-validate is really important. It has to be balanced with being able to take on feedback about our actions (aka a conscience), but if we’re so fragile we can’t maintain our sense of ourself in the face of disagreement, criticism or name-calling, that is a problem in us, and it’s on us to solve it. Get therapy to develop a stronger sense of self and self-esteem and compassion. It’s doable.

The comments she made were horrible, and tbh I would consider someone calling another person “a faggot with tits” as a hate crime. You can state biological facts that there are only two sexes but the kind of hate that it takes to say something like she did about another person does deserve a punishment, even if it’s only a suspended sentence and fine.

"she" in this case is in fact he.

It's basically a spat between men who "identify as" women, one of whom thinks men only turn into women if they have genital surgery* and one who thinks saying "I'm a woman" plus some clothing, make up and fake breasts is enough.

*He is right about sex being binary but has missed out immutable - men can never turn into women.

An extremely offensive and indefensible comment but I'm certain I agree being rude should be categorised as a crime and I definitely don't agree with imprisonment for being rude

Agree. It was hurtful, unkind and unpleasant, but calling it a crime is an overreaction.

And jailing someone for calling somebody else a rude name? Nah. There needs to be some onus on individuals to develop a modicum of resilience. People don’t agree with us. They sometimes don’t like us. That’s life. It can’t be legislated away.

They were horrible, and made by one transwoman to another, which muddies the hate crime water a bit.
What about women, which nasty words about women would attract a punishment, do you think? I suggested, ‘Saggy old hag with droopy tits.’ I doubt any judge would sentence for that though.

Life stage isn’t about age though. It’s about what you are doing at any given time. Even that can be wooly.
Who was middle aged, the 45 yr old on the school run with her first child? The 45yr old on the school run with her grandchild?
The 55yr old retired and going on holiday three times a year, mountaineering and skiing? The 55yr old working on the checkout at Tesco?

Middle aged is number related, not lifestyle related.

We probably went to the same warehouse do's (as they were called before raves) Sam.

SamW98 · 22/02/2024 14:59

LentilFaculties · 22/02/2024 14:47

Your generation gave us raves and I thank you for it.

Perhaps there's a confidence that comes from not feeling I have to compensate, but I'm 40s & I describe myself as middle aged sometimes for a laugh and sometimes with utmost seriousness because my lovely mum died at much less than twice my age.

But I bet people who are into stereotypes, like a PP, couldn't guess much about my actual personality and life from that.

Honestly the discovery of house music and raving changed my life. Its been 35 years now on and off - and the fact I’ve been doing it 35 years means I can’t be in denial about my age 😀

Ereshkigalangcleg · 22/02/2024 14:57

Both age and sex are critical to fertility, @PP82. You can try to "get round it" if you are a privileged person with money. But that doesn't mean they are irrelevant.

FlamingoAndJohn · 22/02/2024 14:56

Peskysquirrel · 22/02/2024 14:46

It's not "all just a state of mind" though, is it? There are real and practical considerations connected with age. Like fertility. As you are well aware. And there is nothing wrong with being aware of that and realistic about that.

Edited to say: real and practical considerations particularly for women.

I quite agree. We can all carry on like we are 20 still but decide to start a family at 50 and you are going to find that, if you are a woman, biology doesn’t care how young you feel.

Enjoy life, do young people things but time and tide wait for no man.

PP82 · 22/02/2024 14:55

DerekFaker · 22/02/2024 14:50

Your age is absolutely about biology. It's counted from the day you are born.

This is beyond silly.

Yes. My chronological age. But not which stage of life I'm in, or what that entails. 40 now is very different from 40 fifty years ago. 70 is VERY different. Things change, including how people live at different ages, how healthy they are, how they look, and what are the most common set of circumstances for someone of that age to be living in. It's not all determined by biology alone.

Peskysquirrel · 22/02/2024 14:55

Clearly biology doesn't matter until it matters.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 22/02/2024 14:54

Everything actually is about biology. Any one of us might die tomorrow. You are only here because a woman and a man came together in whatever sense, even when there is IVF involved. Every human alive is the product of that fusion of male and female gametes. That's before we look at other living things. There are only two sexes. Men don't ever have the bodily experiences common to the majority of female people.

pickledandpuzzled · 22/02/2024 14:53

Middle aged is a number. It’s around the middle of an average life so I’d say it kicked in between 40 and 50.

I was old before my time, as are my DC.

I still didn’t hit middle aged til that number arrived!

You can have any outlook you like, and any lifestyle you like, but the numbers are numbers and don’t adjust accordingly!

Sure, but I'm not talking about biology. I can get around the biology. Not everything is about biology.
