If we’re not labelling, why are transwomen so desperately demanding the labels Woman and lesbian?

Few people's sexualities are cut and dried anyway

This is glib, echo chamber nonsense. Many people are completely monosexual. Both here and in Spain. Bisexuality is not everyone's cup of tea.

I never said bisexuality is everyone's cup of tea, just that most people don't have an easily defined sexuality, even if they pretend to others or themselves that they do. Why the obsession with labelling and limiting people?

I call myself straight but I've had more same sex encounters than some gay and bisexual people I know. I know gay men who've slept with more women than a lot of straight men I know. Maybe a few people have straightforward sexualities but that's unusual, and more and more people acknowledge that fact.

I suspect most people are pansexual really.

LentilFaculties · 22/02/2024 17:24

I agree that belief in gender ideology is just like a religion.

I'm atheist but have friends, family and neighbours of many religions. They don't force me to pray, or recite religious text or even to agree that their god exists though.

Some religious people do operate like that of course. The current iteration of trans ideology is operating as a fundamentalist religion which is especially worrying when governments go along with it. Trans people don't all think like that of course but the ones that do seem to take a lot of the representation.

I agree that sexuality is, fortunately, far more nuanced these days but I still don’t see gay men being called bigots for not wanting to have a relationship with someone who has a vagina.

They do, but mostly they appear to laugh it off, the average "trans man" isn't threatening to a man in the same way some MTF "lesbians" can be to women.

The idea that you can be defined by your sexual attraction is a Victorian one. Few people's sexualities are cut and dried anyway, and young people have a much more fluid concept. The old labels are beginning to fall away.

Do gay men ever get told this?
Are they ever told that they are old fashioned for liking dick and not fanny?

Sexuality is not a "Victorian invention". Some people are only attracted to the opposite sex. Some people are only attracted to the same sex. Some people are attracted to both sexes.

If people could identify out of it, given that it's been punishable by death in the past, they might have chosen to do so. But they cannot make themselves be attracted to the opposite sex if they are not.

I agree it’s doesn’t matter. We’re stuck with our biology but can wear what we like. We can go into whatever career we like. Being female no longer stops us being a doctor. Being make no longer stops us looking after our kids.

Gender is bollocks that tries to force us to behave differently according to our sex.

This.

Gender is a construct, sure. So is religion, nationality, race. Sexuality as we understand it is a Victorian invention. Do we tell people they can't define themselves according to those things?

The far right has just as much in common with gender ideology. Both believe in gender. Both centre men and neither allow women to be truly free.

Also ....It is not gender non conforming for an adult male to weaponise misogynist laws against women, to parody women's trauma and opression, or to force themselves into women's spaces. Those are the behaviours we take issue with. By all means males should crack on with the dresses, nails, lippy and hair.

Why do you think they thought they were more like the opposite sex? Is it the ineffable woman essence?

None of the trans people I have known personally have conformed to gender stereotypes in the slightest.

pickledandpuzzled · 22/02/2024 16:43

I class it with Reiki. A way of processing the world that isn’t in any way magical, but which some people find helpful.

I know nothing about the road less traveled. I do know a couple of NLP principles that are quite handy for resilience. You’re getting a bit reactive. Are you reading in things which aren’t actually there?

There’s a conversation about external locus of control that my NLP reference was in response to. There’s a couple of similar principles in NLP- nothing magical about just a bit of old fashioned wisdom.

Sorry, just have a very low tolerance for those types of things.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 22/02/2024 16:41

But I've always fought bigotry and prejudice and I'm not going to stop now.

Sure. You're the very model of empathy and compassion for others.

People can't change their biological sex but if you were actually a liberal you'd realise that doesn't matter.

It does not matter if they dress up how they like; it does matter but it is their business if they harm their body in trying to look like the other biological type they cannot be.

What does matter is for a society to lie and say they are women and may be treated as though they are, alongside women, in all situations.

That is repressive and regressive not liberal.

I’m not far right. Dyed in the wool wishy washy liberal, me.

I just happen to know people can’t change sex, like most of the world including people who are also really nasty and bigoted and people who are paragons of virtue.

Yep. I expect that Nigel Farage, Billy Bragg and myself all agree on what is an apple and what is an orange. It doesn’t mean we all agree politically.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 22/02/2024 16:38

No, being deluded about the importance of biological sex in many circumstances isn't the definition of "a liberal".

NLP may be discredited, but it’s excellent at helping people recognise where their strength is. Don’t let other people’s nasty words drive your life. Work around the obstacles rather than banging your head on them.

The Road Less Travelled? NLP? Are you effing serious?
