What if everyone takes the piss then? You know, just because they can? What if all the organisations and resources meant for "trans" people go to men like the soldier and lots of the boring middle aged non glittery people that you despise claiming to be "non binary" for a laugh?

They'd have to be allowed to.

Or we'd have to have definitions and criteria and gate-keeping as to who was and was not genuinely trans, non-binary etc.

Like useless Humza deciding who is "at it" and who isn't

Personally, I would love to see the definitions and criteria.

Goldwork · 22/02/2024 12:29

4 years ago someone made some factual biological statements about a trans identifying man

He called him "“prototype of a faggot with tits" - not sure I would describe that as a factual biological statement.

The soldier is obviously taking the piss. But who cares. It's never good when you tighten rules to prevent the odd bad faith actor. That's how we end up 'cracking down' on benefits claimants or asylum seekers. The guy obviously has an agenda, so we shouldn't let him win.

Would you feel the same loosening of rules around safeguarding should apply in all cases say with police checks on teachers?

I wonder if Spain allows self ID for known/convicted paedophiles? I hope not.

Ha ha so you are one of the special people, not like those other people.

You can legally ID as something you are not but nobody who is the thing you aren't thinks you are the thing you say you are because you have a piece of paper.

Same as men who say they are women.

As long as I have all the rights and benefits that the piece of paper confers, why would I care?

But Spain is a hugely diverse country, with significant differences between regional languages and cultures.

Unlike the U.K. where the Scottish highlands are exactly the same as Cornwall and North Wales is identical to Belfast.

Yes, I know. I've lived in different parts of the UK. When I went to university I was astonished at how different the lives and experiences of people from other parts of such a small country were. Another reason why I don't consider myself to have a 'British identity.' What does that even mean?

The only part of the UK I would ever even consider living in again is Scotland. Hopefully it won't be part of the UK forever.

Spain is most certainly not some progressive paradise, but it's made great strides in recent years. I'll be Spanish in a few years time.

I self identify as an immigrant. We all know the type of people expats are. I'm most certainly not one of those (holds nose.)

The only identities that count are those we choose or fashion for ourselves

I don’t believe the identities we choose for ourselves are the only ones that count though, as how people around us perceive us counts for so much, if not more, too.

Also, there is no way you will imbibe all the same societal and cultural characteristics as the native born Spaniards however close you come to it.

Think of Henry James books and those poor American heiresses in Europe.

But Spain is a hugely diverse country, with significant differences between regional languages and cultures.

I've lived in different countries, different continents. I've never found that nationality has been a factor in terms of understanding or relating to others at anything more than the most superficial level.

It's all gone very 'blood and soil' here hasn't it. How enormously surprising.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 22/02/2024 12:07

Exactly, @ScrollingLeaves

I think it's interesting that you think you can become "Spanish" just by moving there and applying for citizenship. I doubt the Spanish people you know see it like that, whatever they say to you.

I'm currently applying for nationality in a third country. I don't live there and never have but when I get it I'll consider myself to be of that country.

You have no idea of my heritage. While I was born and raised in Britain, as were my parents, most of my heritage is not British. From a young age I didn't like it there, never planned to stay once I reached adulthood, and left as soon as I could. I've never really considered myself British. My child will have 4 nationalities, and be able to choose how they identify, which is a great gift.

The only identities that count are those we choose or fashion for ourselves. Everything else is just an accident of birth.

An ordinary Spanish man, a soldier, who likes his body, and women, has self-IDedas a woman after Spanish law make it possible last year.

He has changed nothing about himself, not even his name. Nada.
He said ‘F* it why not!?’/‘coño por qué no’

The Spanish Army however will not allow him to use the women’s changing facilities. He is considering taking legal action against them.

Another Spanish Transwoman has complained that he is not a real one.

Yes! Does anyone remember there was a Danish or Norwegian guy who did exactly the same about 7 years ago?

ScrollingLeaves · 22/02/2024 11:49

pronounsbundlebundle · 22/02/2024 11:11

I was considering spending my holiday money going to Spain. Now I'm not, it'll get spent elsewhere.

What with this, however confused, and the Spanish dude Mr Menno drew my intention to who is now legally a woman despite changing nothing whatsoever about himself. Highlighting the very misogynistic erasure of women via self-ID. Maybe the whole male population of Spain should do the same? How on earth would babies then get made?

I don't want to accidentally say up is in fact up in Spain and get arrested for not saying up is down, after all.

I saw that from Mr Menno too here about 2:10 into his video.

Not really, no. I believe they are immigrants, like all the expats in Spain, including you. If they have children here, they are British. So when you have your baby, he/she will be Spanish. I'm dual nationality myself, but I'm British.

Yes, you'll be Spanish in the same way a male person calling themselves a woman is a woman.

I'll be a Spanish citizen. What other way is there to be Spanish?

Do you not believe that people who emigrate to Britain and obtain citizenship are really British?
