Lesbian members club to only allow biological women

JanesLittleGirl · 18/02/2024 12:52

"A FEMINIST campaigner is to open the UK’s first lesbian members bar that will only allow biological women to join.

The bar, named the L Community, is due to open in London later this year and will operate as a private members club so that it can bar trans women.

The bar has been set up by Jenny Watson, who in September last year was at the centre of a transphobia row after she insisted only “adult human females” could attend the lesbian speed-dating events she had organised."

Who cares if some women might choose to present themselves in a gender non-conforming way?

That doesn’t mean that men who want people to identify them as women have a right to lie or force their way into female-only spaces.

This is the ‘well she wore a short skirt’ line argumentation.

Yes, reinforcing the sterotype that transwomen don't respect boundaries.

Yes, isn't that a little....transphobic?

I'm not a lesbian so I wouldn't want to enter this space that's not meant for me. Unless I was invited in by a lesbian friend and sure that I wasn't pissing lesbians off by being there.
Why do men feel entitled to do that?

DadJoke · 21/02/2024 01:35

And yet gender non-conforming women are mistaken for trans women by other women, and they can fail to recognise trans women. How will this club enforce its policy - “we can just tell?”

Sometimes someone's sex can seem ambiguous at a glance, or at a distance, or when they are standing still - but the moment they speak or move, it is very apparent which sex they are. Whether they are gender non-conforming is immaterial. I know a couple of very "butch" women who are still most definitely and obviously female.

Photographs are more difficult because of filters etc.

AND - men tend to be more confused by gender-ambiguity than women are. It all comes down to an evolutionary awareness of danger . . .

Edited because autocarrot isn't fecking telling me what I can say

Are they? Citation needed.

JacksonLambsEatIvy · 21/02/2024 08:27

Do you know what the worst thing about the DadJoke argument?

It’s that it starts from the assumption that women should have no boundaries at all because male people will lie and deceive and such like to access women and women’s spaces. And does not view that as a bad thing or a problem with men.

The starting point should be that it is a club for women - biologically female adults. Regardless of how they dress. Or what length their hair is. Or whether they intend to be ‘ladylike’ in their mannerisms.

If biological men with identity choose to try to access that club, they are entirely in the wrong. They are behaving unacceptably.

But there is DadJoke to tell us al that lesbians can’t have a female only club because some of them dare not to conform to gender stereotypes and men will take advantage of this.

It’s victim blaming. And just atrocious. A big problem with transactivism is just how against women setting boundaries it is. Pure male entitlement. They want something so they must be allowed to have it and the problem is women who say no.

I am not a lesbian but want to join to show solidarity!

I feel exactly the same!

Good for her - I'm so glad she's succeeded in getting this off the ground.

Isn't she the woman who had to cancel her Lesbian speed dating evenings because of intrusive male "lesbians" not only insisting on their "right" to be there, but being threatening and unpleasant towards the women who (unsurprisingly) refused to have anything to do with him?

HeartofSaturdayNight · 21/02/2024 08:22

I prefer to grey rock disruptive/dishonest/activist types on this and other threads. Life is too short.

I will however share my suspicion that some posters, those with weird takes and male names, might be female with a (entirely subjective) masculine identity. They may well fit into the category of women this club is aimed, whilst pretending they are not, who knows? And I assume they would be made welcome in that case.

However, whilst transmen may be a feature of lesbian culture, these days, trans identified males are still the opposite sex and the suggestion that, on the door, men will pass as women IRL is pure fantasy.

Any ways back to the OP.

Best wishes to Jenny, she's a mighty woman.

God what a sign of the times.
This is like ‘Pope needed, only Catholics need apply’
Lesbians being same-sex attracted women.

Lesbians are the group which is more supportive of transgender people than almost any other, with 84% having a positive view, compared with 39% of the average population. It's going to be tough to find enough gender critical lesbians to keep it going.

I'd love to hear how they will enforce their door policy - there are an awful lot of gender non-conforming lesbians.

well, it's a common rule for any applicant to a member's club to have to be 'proposed' by an existing member.

i don't disagree that there'll be economic challenges involved. a member's club generally isn't a hookup/dating kind of place, which is where this particular need for 'women only' first emerged. there are already more work etc focused women's only clubs in London. i suppose this would be an online thing with occasional meet ups?

I doubt you'll be allowed in but do let us know how you get on.

Yes, the threat is clearly implied. We know you don't want us there but just try and keep us out.

SamW98 · 21/02/2024 07:56

Surely entry will be enforced fairly easily as it’s a private members club therefore anyone applying to become a member will need to provide identifying information and be subject to background checks.

Not really your concern is it?

Just accept that there is one place actively trying to keep males out.

Of course, if one of your lot managed to get in, despite knowing they would not be welcome, you can congratulate yourself on a job well done 🙄

Being supportive of transgender people does not necessarily translate into wanting to include them in your same sex dating pool.

Rightsraptor · 21/02/2024 07:29

What do 'supportive' & 'positive view' mean though, @DadJoke? They're both very woolley and non-committal. I suspect they mean nothing more than the usual 'should have the right not to be harassed or assaulted, have the same rights as everyone else'. They definitely don't mean these men are wanted everybloodywhere lesbians go, and certainly not as sexual partners.

And if there are an awful lot of gender nonconforming lesbians, they'll have had even more experience of sorting the wheat from the chaff than the rest of us, won't they?

NeighbourhoodWatchPotholeDivision · 21/02/2024 02:40

Readers on the thread, note how he both acknowledges that many lesbians don't like feminine fashions, while simultaneously assuming that lesbians have no idea about... lesbian culture.Grin

If there's one group of People Most Likely to recognise a woman as a woman, no matter how short her hair, it's lesbians, especially lesbian feminists.

Lesbian feminists aren't confused by women rejecting make-up, or any other beauty standard imposed on women. Face-to-face, the only people I've ever witnessed getting confused by the sex of short-haired women and long-haired men were... straight men.

Maybe there's a bit of projection going on here?

lesbians are quite used to seeing gender non conforming women. They’re not confused about whether or not they’re female because they have short hair or wear trousers.

Jenny is brilliant in her tenacity. I applaud her for continuing to make safe events for true lesbians to enjoy.

My worry is the petulant foot stamping TW he refuse to hear the word ‘no’ will do what they can to protest and cause disruption.

Can't possibly let women have something of their own can they?

Women can tell who are women. They don’t get confused by women not performing femininity.
