Right wingers, meant as an insult, are to blame for ruining Park Run, not men in frocks.

Complain here:

Voices must be heard, even if this is an opinion piece. This mad ideology only continues whilst we allow it and not speaking up is a CHOICE to allow it to keep happening.

Why have rightwingers made even parkrun a battleground for trans people? | Jonathan Liew

When non-competitive, mass-participation jogging is annexed by the culture warriors, it’s clear there are other agendas at play

My favourite line:

"waving a nightmare progress-flag that looks like a car crash on a 90s website."

It does! It really does! Is there a "flagsthatsuck dot com"?

theilltemperedclavecinist · 14/02/2024 13:18

How deluded do you have to be, to think that if transgender athletes swept the board in women's sports, the reaction of the world would be "how inspiring! You go, girls"?

Yes, misogyny is rife. But people who like sport tend to have quite strong ideas about cheating don't they?

Wait! What would Joey Barton say?

duc748 · 14/02/2024 13:15

Haven't RTWT yet, but my first thought was, it's Jonathan Liew, he's a prick anyway. I've come across his smug and poorly argued pieces before (including on MN, I think).

So many great comments under JKR's. I did like this one:

"If anyone wonders what left wing male supremacy rhetoric looks like, it's that"

#OperationLetThemSpeak in full flow today in the Guardian.

maltravers · 14/02/2024 12:24

I see the Queen/JKR has given him her opinion on his piece/X thread. Sorry I don’t know how to link!

She's relatively polite.

Liew must be feeling very righteous after posting that illiterate screed against women. Floating high on a little cloud of that good old left-wing sexism that’s made such a resurgence recently - "Look, addressing women’s issues comes after the revolution, Comrade; now go and make us all a nice cuppa, darlin’, while we discuss dialectical materialism for a bit."

He strikes me as the sort that doesn’t value women’s sport in the first place so doesn’t care if it has to suffer disruption from cheats.

Even in the guardian, the comments aren't open.

The Guardian opens comments for crucial topics like restaurant reviews and recipes.

I hope someone starts taking dicks who calls women far right to court for liable and reputational damage.

Not reading that but they can bog off

JK Rowling's response to the author:

Your previous remarks leave no room for mystery about your own special interest in this subject. Like many ‘progressive’ misogynists, you seem delighted to have found an acceptable outlet for your disdain for women’s and girls’ sport. We see you, Jonathan.

The danger of trying to convince someone they are right wing because they disagree with you is that you succeed.

Lottapianos · 14/02/2024 12:44

JKR - she's bloody brilliant. Nailed it

SinnerBoy · 14/02/2024 12:41

I can't find it. I am crap at Twitter.

I went to her thread and searched.

AlphariusOmegron · 14/02/2024 12:40

none other than JK has replied to him on twitter now -

That's my kind of article.

ErrolTheDragon · 14/02/2024 12:26

Oh, it's that guy! He doesn't think much of women's rights does he!

He's probably in favour of our right to remain silent and ... nope, that's it.

Ffs. The needs (or rather, wants, given they're not banned from competing as their correct sex) of the few do not outweigh the needs of the many in this case.

MatchingBedding · 14/02/2024 12:17

”Why would that be bad”. He has no idea does he? It’s only a few stupid women, in stupid women’s sports that no one cares about anyway that will lose their records, their prizes, their ad deals. So long as the trans kids (don’t get me started on that) get to see it, who cares about those girls that give up before they start. In fact it’s best they do give up then they won’t get in the way of those special people that matter more than them…not more than the men though. So long as it doesn’t impact the men. What a shite hawk.

Should you wish to, this is my letter to the guardian, feel free to steal as much of it as you like.

Dear Editor,
I am writing to express my profound disappointment and concern regarding the portrayal of individuals who advocate for the protection of women's sports in a recent opinion piece published in your outlet. I find it deeply troubling that the article seems to categorize those of us with legitimate concerns about the fairness and integrity of women's sports as "right-wing," thereby dismissing our arguments and concerns as purely politically motivated.

It is my strong belief that advocating for the protection of women's sports is not a matter of political ideology but of fairness and safety for female athletes. The suggestion that such concerns are inherently misogynistic, racist, or antithetical to feminist principles is not only baseless but deeply offensive. As a parent of a daughter, I am acutely aware of the importance of ensuring a level playing field where her rights and opportunities are not compromised.

Additionally, I find it particularly offensive that a man has authored this piece on a matter so intrinsically linked to women's rights and spaces. This choice effectively silences and marginalizes women's voices, further exacerbating the issue by prioritizing male perspectives on a subject that primarily affects women. Such editorial decisions undermine the importance of amplifying female voices in discussions about their own rights and protections.

I urge The Guardian to reconsider the framing of such discussions in its publications. It is essential to foster a balanced and nuanced conversation that respects the complexities of this issue, rather than resorting to divisive labels and accusations. As a long-time reader, I hope for a more inclusive and respectful approach to sensitive topics in the future.
Sincerely,

Nice. Thank you for standing up for women's and girl's sports.

GrammarTeacher · 14/02/2024 12:07

ParkRun is now back to its roots. The records don't matter. You should only be competing against yourself. ParkRun is a run for everyone.
The timing and distance isn't accurate. This why RunBritain records them separately

ErrolTheDragon · 14/02/2024 12:05

The thing that the Colin Wright picture doesn't capture is that parts of the 'left' have become very good at oppressing some people with protected characteristics. Anti women's rights, antisemitic, authoritarian ...

PotteringPondering · 14/02/2024 11:53

I read the article, and for me it was the last straw. This morning I stopped my Guardian subscription, explaining why.

I read Jonathan Liew's nonsense just after reading this other article (shared by cancelled children's author Rachel Rooney) on why the activist left views everything through the lens of America's culture wars. Rings true.

On Activism for Toddlers

Toddlers love books. Especially board books, with titles such as The Dinosaur Who Didn’t Eat Pizza. So it was that I found myself in a Brighton & Hove library, browsing board books with a two-year-old. One was prominently displayed face-out: A is for A...

I shouldn't worry about it. When the left has abandoned inclusion, multi culturalism, disabled access, equality for women, equality for homosexuals, child safeguarding, religious tolerance and equality in general, they are only identifying as left.

The material reality is that there's nothing politically leftist about them.

Edited

Absolutely this. The way the left treat women, being called left-wing should be a massive insult.
