In case you haven't seen it, Simon Fanshawe (one of the founders of Stonewall who left recently as he felt it had lost its way) has been elected as Rector for Edinburgh University.

It was unopposed as the other candidate had to withdraw. As you might imagine the TRAs are losing their shit with one linking it to the murder of Brianna Ghey which is truly despicable.

Dr. Gina Gwenffrewi
@GinaGwenffrewi
Ten days since the judge at the trial of Brianna Ghey's killers identified transphobia as partial motive for the murder, the University of Edinburgh announces its new Rector is a founder of LGB Alliance, an organization categorized in Ireland as an "anti-transgender" hate group.

Anyone in the university can nominate a candidate but they need to then get a certain number of people agreeing to nominate that person - I think about 60? There were two candidates but one was deemed ineligible - according to the student newspaper the other candidate worked occasionally for the university which is against the rules. the rector cant be a student at Edinburgh or work for the university.

There aren't usually many candidates the current rector (who is very pro trans) was elected unopposed and none of the people moaning about simons election had a problem with that

Does anyone know how the Rector thing works? It's all a bit of a mystery to me, how Simon got to be a candidate, and why there was only one. Do uni managers put two people forward and then students vote or something?

This is fantastic news.

newtlover · 12/02/2024 21:15

I love that in the BBC article his photograph shows him a the front of a pride march, actually holding a banner that says 'lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender' and 'no section 28'- especially since everything we ever say is met with 'its just like section 28 all over again'

well done Simon Fanshawe

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 12/02/2024 21:10

It would be lovely if someone very senior at Edinburgh University sent out a swathe of official warnings to the assorted staff and students libelling Simon Fanshawe and the LGB Alliance and alleging the election was somehow rigged. Freedom of speech is important, but so is truth and fact-checking.

dapsnotplimsolls · 12/02/2024 21:10

I bet there's going to be a candlelit procession of 'unsafe' students and staff tonight.

I just saw this on Twitter/X. Sorry but I don't know how to link to the video without linking to the tweet.

They interview a whiny male staff member who says that Simon "speaks offensively". I was dying for the interviewer to ask for an example of this offensive speech, but sadly no.

The drama has made TV. For Women Scotland appear talking sense:

Simon replies calmly:

Dear Dr Gwenffrewi, I stood fully expecting an election. On a platform of helping to create dialogue. See statement here ^simonfanshawe.com/blog/^
I am not a founder of LGBAlliance (that was two lesbians) But there is dialogue to be had. Please read what I have written

That is a lovely way of saying "would you like some help putting your toys back in the pram?"

an organization categorized in Ireland as an "anti-transgender" hate group.

Categorized by whom, exactly?

Also, about Dr Gina Gwenffrewi - "I came out in 2016 as a transgender female. "

Co-Director of SUISS, at the UoE. Lecturer in Trans Studies / Eng. Lit, researching media, digital societies and trans cultural production

So basically another male TRA up in arms because someone is speaking up for women without penises?

dapsnotplimsolls · 12/02/2024 19:42

Sorry, Gina!

The name sounds vaguely familiar, did Gwen also have a tantrum over the showing of the AHF film?

I think Gina was not happy with AHF

Poor Dr Gina,my black and shrivelled heart breaks for her.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 12/02/2024 19:16

Simon Fanshawe is a lovely thoughtful man. He'll be an excellent Rector.

GreigeO · 12/02/2024 19:11

Excellent!

Snowypeaks · 12/02/2024 19:09

Congratulations, Simon Fanshawe.

SirChenjins · 12/02/2024 18:12

This is great news - finally someone who brings some balance to the issue. The fact that the TRAs are up in arms about it is reassuring, although bringing Brianna Ghey up is despicable.

The position is elected by the student body and the primary role of the rector is to preside at the University Court. They also work closely with students and the Edinburgh University Students' Association (EUSA).

If the student body know Fanshawe's background this is really significant.

Perhaps Scotland has gone to far and the optics of Isla Bryson and Self ID have had a positive result.

Chrysanthemum5 · 12/02/2024 18:07

The election would have been open to all staff and students however as the other candidate withdrew Simon was appointed without having to go through the campaign
