Thoughts with the woman who remains in hospital, and her two girls. May they all have lots of support and help to heal.

Better all round for everyone that's he's conformed dead. What a stain to have left on the world.

The mother is recovering at least to an extent. My heart goes out to her and her daughters.

Good news to have it confirmed. And closure for the victims, & for his family too.

The UK is a safer place without him.

Soubriquet · 20/02/2024 15:37

Same here.

stealtheatingtunnocks · 20/02/2024 14:56

Body found in the Thames.

Hope he suffered.

CrispsandCheeseSandwich · 09/02/2024 21:33

You'd think they'd have cctv on bridges for this very reason. Not criminals necessarily, but anyone reported missing where suicide is a concern. I mean, there's cctv everywhere else in London, why not on all the bridges? If someone was reported missing, and there was cctv of them similar to this man, but no one knew for sure, that would be awful for the family. I know you can't cover everywhere, but a bridge over the Thames in central London seems an odd blind spot.

colouringindoors · 09/02/2024 21:06

I would have been very cynical about this announcement from the Met. But the injuries to his face, well, unless he's been hidden by a medical professional I'm not sure how he would be functioning after this amount of time.

Deep burns aren't painful though because all the nerve endings that enable you to feel pain are destroyed.

Full thickness burns are not painful, but no one with an extensive burn has pure full thickness. Where you have a full thickness burns you will typically also have a lot of partial thickness, which are extremely painful. A burn is probably the single most painful injury it is possible to have. I have seen some horrendous ones, and the screams of the patients and the smell will stay with me forever.

At this stage, if he were still alive, the pain from the burns would be the least of his issues, as he would almost certainly be septic from the untreated dead tissue, with the infection spreading through the eye socket to the brain.

Call me cynical, but I worry it might be the policing giving up and assuming this to be the outcome rather than admit they haven’t got a clue where he is.

This was my worry too.. but if he rocks up with that distinguishable look they'd be so discredited. I'd be thinking it's a cover up if he didn't have that

passiveconstellation · 09/02/2024 20:57

NeighbourhoodWatchPotholeDivision · 09/02/2024 20:53

Seems more likely than not. As soon as the CCTV image was released showing that injury to his face, people speculated that the pain of it had driven him to suicide.

If the police have footage of him pacing backwards and forwards on a bridge, which is characteristic of someone trying to reach a decision, that's quite persuasive.

This surprises me. It wouldn't have surprised me if he did it a day or two after the actual incident when he realised how big a news story it was.

I'm not sorry he has killed himself but it feels unjust, in a way, for the woman he attacked

Yeah, I agree. On one hand, I'm delighted he is no longer in the world. On the other, he has cheated his victims of any form of closure from a trial.

(This is one of the reasons I believe he is dead, incidentally - someone who commits this type of crime is often too much of a narcissist to cope with being held accountable for it.)

Alwaysoneoddsock · 09/02/2024 20:07

It does seem like a leap to think he must have died. Is there cctv from the other side of the bridge? Could he not have got into a car? I thought you are covered by cctv wherever you are in London.

Meadowfinch · 09/02/2024 19:57

It was the only possible outcome.

There no place in the U.K. for anyone who thinks maiming defenceless women and children is a rational way to salve his own pathetic ego. He wasn't worth the air he breathed. Let's hope his body is recovered soon.

I wish the mum and her daughters a speedy recovery.

Until they have his body, I will be assuming he is still alive.

Me too

PurpleSparkledPixie · 09/02/2024 19:46

Honestly MissLucy I couldn't give a flying w/e over whether he did/didn't. I just think it's too convenient to say it's likely to have happened. I'm out though as I'm finding this all very distasteful tbh.

I hope he is dead, but I think it's too early to call it and I'm surprised the media have.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 09/02/2024 19:20

I find it fascinating how invested people are in rejecting the obvious solution.

  1. He committed a narcissistic crime of abuse. Narcissistic abusers commonly die by suicide after a crime.

  2. He had a very obvious injury that makes him easy to identify.

  3. He was last seen on CCTV, pacing on a bridge and looking into a river.

It's Nicola Bulley all over again, in terms of people rejecting the obvious. No doubt there will be loads of these "I just feel it in my bones that he is alive" threads, only for people to go very quiet when his body is found.

Could he still be alive? Yes. Is it much more likely that he is dead? Also yes.

I think the first point needs to be looked at with similar acid attack crimes and culture

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 09/02/2024 19:34

Sidebeforeself · 09/02/2024 19:26

@MissLucyEyelesbarrow You are missing out one huge factor though. The woeful inadequacy of the Met and its dishonesty. Proved time and time again.

I wouldn't trust the Met as far as I can throw them, but it was very likely that he was dead, even before this CCTV footage emerged.

If he were alive, his burn would be in a terrible state by now. Even if he did have someone prepared to give him medication for pain, that wouldn't help treat the burn. He would need surgical debridement (removal of dead tissue) by a specialist surgeon, in an operating theatre, to survive. So he has very likely either died by suicide or from the complications of the burn by now.

Signalbox · 09/02/2024 19:30

I don’t believe that anyone throwing acid at a three year old child isn’t trying to kill that child. And if he’d thrown himself off a bridge into the Thames shortly after the attack he wouldn’t know that he wasn’t successful.

passiveconstellation · 09/02/2024 19:26

PurpleSparkledPixie · 09/02/2024 19:14

If he had killed them then my view would be different but he didn't. Even the little girl survived without life threatening injuries despite him having a good go at slamming her poor body repeatedly against the ground. He wouldn't kill himself until the job was done.

I can't find it now but didn't someone in his own family say that he couldn't be a sex offender as he was too nice. He's being protected imo.

I think you're overlooking the fact that he didn't know that at 11pm on the day he attacked them.

You only know all that because you are writing nearly two weeks after the event, knowing that the children have been discharged from hospital.

He was on that bridge hours later. He didn't know they had survived or would survive.

Dying is not easy. Killing oneself is not easy. Framing it that way is unhelpful and just sounds bloodthirsty.

I find it entirely credible that on realising he'd destroyed his own life through his actions and had also blinded himself and destroyed his own face in the process, and with no means to travel home having crashed then abandoned his car due to blinding himself, and no real future remaining - that someone would feel suicidal and act upon those feelings.

I hope his victims receive the best long term career and support that it is possible to provide, but sadly I don't think there is any recovery from this level of psychological trauma even before factoring in the life changing physical injuries.

Family annihilators and spree killers very commonly die by suicide during or shortly after their crimes.

(I appreciate that, fortunately, none of his victims have so far died but, in other respects, this is a similar crime)

Does that follow for men that do acid attacks?
