Why is Mumsnet so GC?

ireallycantthinkofaname · 03/02/2024 00:18

Maybe an odd question but I've never come across another space, online or otherwise, where being GC is the norm. IRL I only ever discuss GC views openly with one family member, whose stance on it is similar to my own, though, so I'm not saying it's unwelcome.... Just curious how/why it's come about. Any thoughts or theories?

I too would vote in favour of women and children's needs but thanks for showing why I avoid the posts - some of you are way too eager to get butt hurt!

And no, 'trans based' posts are not all on the LGBT boards, they show in the trending section, which many of us simply have a little skim through and read what we fancy.

So thanks, but I'll keep swerving those threads, if it means avoiding such 'jump-on', argumentative bollox. You can go ahead and make more assumptions about what I know/don't know, think/don't think based on that if you want to. Have another rant if you feel like it. I won't be back, so knock yourself out.

Blimey. I was actually just clarifying what your post meant because there seemed to be some confusion with the terminology. I was doing the very opposite of ‘jumping to conclusions’.

I had genuinely read it that you were not referring to this board and clarified. Notice the (?) at the end of the question. Before I then agreed. And then pointed out that actually MN was very much what many people describe as GC.

Obviously, you have taken my post as a ‘rant’ and that is your prerogative. But it seems an over reaction to me correcting what seemed logical, that you honestly hadn’t seen the polls I referred to.

I can promise you won't.

I have many a time eaten an entire cake (that the box laughingly claimed "serves 12") at one sitting, and if anything there's even more of me in existence than ever.

Serves 12! I thought it said serves 1.2 i assumed it was one portion but you just cut a little bit off for when you fancied a little snack later!

I must make an appointment with the opticians!

@Girlontherailreplacementbusservice have you been ensuring that your dog has access to proper species-affirming veterinary care?

Because while neither word nor biology are things anyone should expect to use as any kind of reference point, surgery and drugs are a basic right and crucial to ensuring your pet’s continued existence.

So, to clarify. The deliberately split off sex and gender threads are not the ‘trans based’ threads? I agree. They are discussing prioritising women and children. That is the base. I believe the ‘trans based’ threads are on the LGBT boards.

However, every poll that is run on MN is overwhelmingly supporting women and children’s needs over the demands of some male people. So if that is ‘GC’ then yes, MN is overwhelmingly GC. Thousands and thousands vote in those polls. And usually 90% in favour of women and girls be protected. Have you missed those on AIBU? If you avoid certain threads then maybe you don’t know at all.

whilst radical feminism doesn't, not because of transphobia but because what it proposes is totally the opposite to the basis of radical feminism. Women as a sex class

I found your post really interesting @IwantToRetire

Can I make a plea though for not making statements like ‘not because of transphobia’. Every time we do this we link our ideas to the reader / listener with transphobia. The TRAs are doing this actively enough without us doing this too.
Your sentence stood without this ‘radical feminism doesn’t but because what is proposed is totally the opposite to the basis of radical feminism. Women as a sex class.’

There is no need for us to constantly repeat the slurs made against us. This just, even if subconsciously, links us to these slurs. Our case stands on its own terms, in its own language. as your sentence with the slur omitted illustrates.

I disagree. I am more than aware of the basis of radical feminism, but also know that TRAs will just take the ommission of referencing their claims as evidence that they are right.

So I am saying you are wrong.

To not to that is just side stepping the confrontation.

And after all as I am writing about what I think it should reflect what I think.

So will continue to say it so they cant claim I was hiding something.

Two wee sprogs who've been gaslit told since birth that Aunty Butters is female, have never thought to question it. Well, fancy that.

My parents told me about Father Christmas and the Easter bunny.

The entire family is probably walking on eggshells so that they don't upset "Aunty" Butters.

How have I not known of the existence of this until now?

I now want a banana purely so that I can call it Keith!

Plus if I eat a whole cake in one sitting will @IcakethereforeIam temporarily blink out of existence?

I can promise you won't.

Don't be so old fashioned and bigoted. Words can mean whatever you want them mean. It so hateful for everyone to insist that fish means fins and scales and living in water. My dog self IDs as a fish so fishes can have legs and fur and live on land.
See it's easy, let go of the 'meaning' nonsense and you will feel so much better.

Tbh, I am a female-centred feminist. Unashamedly. FC Feminist. Thinking gender is a hugely harmful concept to be fought against is part of that.

The idea that feminists should be shamed for centring female people is insidious.

I am also all for safeguarding children.

If you're referring to my post, as I used the term 'trans based threads', then I have to disagree with you. I don't see GC feminism as 'trans based' at all, I just avoid a lot of the 'trans based' threads on this platform and hence, as was my original point, don't see being GC as 'the norm' on Mumsnet at all, because I think lots of us don't prioritise those threads.

So, to clarify. The deliberately split off sex and gender threads are not the ‘trans based’ threads? I agree. They are discussing prioritising women and children. That is the base. I believe the ‘trans based’ threads are on the LGBT boards.

Helleofabore · 22/02/2024 17:07

I suspect that some people have a very different definition of ‘lying’ than others. And I suspect that it is entirely based on this ideological belief that somehow a male person can be a ‘woman’.

A family deeply entrenched in ideology would not consider it a lie to say ‘but I am a woman’ thus signaling that ideology to all members of the family. I also suspect that some family members who will not subvert their need for describing material reality and so call ‘social programming’ will be a contention in family relationships.

ErrolTheDragon · 22/02/2024 17:05

Rebranding == 'women's words stolen and used to mean something very different' - again?
'Gender critical' is now wilfully misrepresented as 'critical of transgender people' rather than 'critical of gender stereotypes'.

StaunchMomma · 22/02/2024 17:04

ErrolTheDragon · 22/02/2024 15:27

It's quite depressing that 'gender critical feminism' is now seen to be 'trans based threads '. Feminism, and our objection to gender stereotypes being inflicted on women and children has become dominated by issues about males.

"how frustrated I am with social programming I've been observing amongst my own relatives"

I wonder how they feel about you and your social programming. It's not as if any of us get to escape from society and its effects, and in my experience people who think they've escaped social programming are often the ones who are most biassed by it.

ErrolTheDragon · 22/02/2024 16:56

Yeah... what 'decision to rebrand'? Confused
I'm pretty sure no one consulted us before the false teaming started. Hmm

JacksonLambsEatIvy · 22/02/2024 16:56

I think some of the supposed ‘rebranding’ was actually in response to the whole TERF as a slur thing. So the conversation went: it’s not about excluding trans people; it’s that gender is represssive and regressive bullshit.

But TRAs used GC as a slur and lumped in everyone who disagrees with gender ideology (even though some of them love gender stereotypes) and still people seem to think this all centres around trans people and wanting to eradicate them or something.

Either way the aim is to distort and catastrophise and make trans the centre of everyone’s universe it seems.

AlisonDonut · 22/02/2024 16:28

'nothing ever comes up and they have no idea'
'i give them information if something comes up'.

Both things cannot be true. Either they have questions or nothing ever comes up.

Axiomatic nonsense yet again.

Helleofabore · 22/02/2024 16:24

I believe that the 'rebranding' was all done by extreme trans activists, but I would be very happy to be proven wrong. I believe it was them who started to detach the 'feminist' from Gender Critical in the attempt to wedge in the huge number of groups, who are absolutely not gender critical, to then discredit and shame feminists.

ButterflyHatched · 22/02/2024 16:20

I think there is a clear cause and effect chain here resulting from the decision to rebrand an existing movement as 'gender critical' at a time when discussions about gender and awareness and acceptance of trans people had firmly entered the general public consciousness.

That is partly because of the campaign to split the boards.
