Why is Mumsnet so GC?

ireallycantthinkofaname · 03/02/2024 00:18

Maybe an odd question but I've never come across another space, online or otherwise, where being GC is the norm. IRL I only ever discuss GC views openly with one family member, whose stance on it is similar to my own, though, so I'm not saying it's unwelcome.... Just curious how/why it's come about. Any thoughts or theories?

If I put candles in my hair and wore a stripey pullover I'd definitely look more like the one on the left. If it was left in the hot sun for a few hours.

I wanted to see Queen Boiled on her sunflower throne.

God i love this co pilot thing! its better than chat gpt!

Boiled - do you give lessons in how to use Co-Pilot? I would gain a lot from being able to make my uninhibited review notes on a paper and then have Co-Pilot or something transform it into something more moderate to return to a journal or funder.

NB: On every relevant paper I review, I ask why there aren't sex-disaggregated data or why, if they exist, they're not in the abstract. I normally have to re-write this as my exasperation might leak through from time to time.

Ponders being a published author, having books with my name across the front of them. 😏

Like that would ever happen!

The little beetle that could (courtesy of Co pilot)

Once upon a time, in a tiny meadow nestled between the tall grasses, there lived a little beetle named Boiled. Boiled was no ordinary beetle; she had a heart as fiery as the sun and a determination that could move mountains—well, at least small pebbles.

Boiled was born with a dream. She wanted to explore the world beyond the meadow, to see what lay beyond the swaying blades of grass. But her family and friends laughed at her. “Beetles don’t wander far,” they said. “Stay close to home, Boiled.”

But Boiled was different. She spent her days climbing dandelion stems, peeking at the horizon, and imagining what lay beyond. She dreamed of soaring through the skies, meeting other insects, and discovering hidden treasures.

One day, as the sun painted the sky in warm hues, Boiled made up her mind. She would leave the meadow and embark on an adventure. She packed her tiny backpack with a leaf sandwich and a dewdrop canteen. Her wings fluttered with excitement.
“Goodbye, everyone!” Boiled called out. Her family waved half-heartedly, thinking she’d be back by sunset.

Boiled’s journey was filled with challenges. She crossed streams on wobbly pebbles, climbed steep hills, and faced fierce ladybugs guarding their territory. But Boiled never gave up. She remembered her mantra: “I think I can, I think I can.”

As days turned into weeks, Boiled discovered new lands. She met a wise old grasshopper who taught her to leap higher and a friendly spider who spun tales of distant forests. Boiled’s wings grew stronger, and her heart swelled with wonder.
One day, atop a sunflower, Boiled saw it—the world beyond. The vast expanse of fields, rivers, and mountains stretched before her. Tears welled up in her tiny eyes. She had come so far!

But Boiled’s adventure was not over. She flew to the highest peak, where the wind whispered secrets. “Boiled,” it said, “you are destined for greatness. Your fiery heart will light up the world.”

And so, Boiled returned to her meadow, not as a little beetle but as a mighty queen. She ruled with kindness, courage, and a vision for unity. The other insects marveled at her wisdom and strength.

Boiled’s meadow transformed into a bustling kingdom. The ants built bridges, the bees composed symphonies, and the butterflies painted rainbows. Boiled’s fiery heart inspired them all.

And what about ruling the world? Well, Boiled did just that. She didn’t conquer with armies or force; she ruled with love and understanding. Her meadow became a beacon of hope, a place where dreams took flight.

And every evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, Boiled would climb her sunflower throne and whisper, “I thought I could, I thought I could.”

And she did.

And so, dear children, remember the tale of Boiled—the little beetle who dared to dream, who believed in herself, and who, in ruling her world, taught us that even the tiniest among us can make a difference.

The end. 🌟🐞

(I'll stop now! Maybe)

Now I could have used copilot for any number of things. I chose world domination!

Manifesto for the Boiled Beetle Empire: A Quirky Revolution
In the steamy caverns of imagination, where beetles bubble and gears grind, a peculiar dawn awaits. The Boiled Beetles, rise! For we shall forge a world where eccentricity reigns supreme, where the clatter of tiny legs echoes through the halls of power, and where our crunchy carapaces shall be the envy of all.
1. The Beetle Parliament:

  • We shall convene in our subterranean chambers, our antennae twitching with anticipation. Here, decisions shall be made by consensus, and no Beetle’s voice shall be silenced by the pompous Ladybug Council.
  • Our motto: “Chitin Unity, Diversity in Wing Patterns.”
2. The Beetle Code of Conduct:
  • We pledge to uphold curiosity, adaptability, and a penchant for collecting shiny pebbles. Our secret handshakes involve intricate mandible clicks.
  • Our battle cry: “Exoskeletons Unite!”
3. The Beetle Economy:
  • Our currency? Polished pebbles, of course! We’ll mine them from the deepest crevices, ensuring fair trade among dung beetles, fireflies, and silverfish.
  • Our economic model: “Beetle-nomics – Prosperity with a Twist.”
4. The Beetle Liberation Front:
  • Armed with iridescent wings and a love for cryptic crossword puzzles, we’ll dismantle the oppressive spider silk webs that entangle us. No more shall we be relegated to compost heaps!
  • Our battle hymn: “Beetles of the World, Unite and Crawl!”
5. The Beetle Arts Renaissance:
  • Our poets shall compose odes to dew-kissed leaves, our painters shall capture the iridescence of moonlit dewdrops, and our musicians shall strum mandolin-like thoraxes.
  • Our anthem: “Wings of Whimsy.”
6. The Beetle Diplomacy:
  • We’ll negotiate peace treaties with neighboring ant colonies, exchanging aphid farming techniques and dance moves. Our chief diplomat: Diplomat Dung Beetle, fluent in 27 languages (including Cricket).
  • Our bedtime story: “The Little Beetle Who Could.”
7. The Beetle Utopia:
  • In our world, every beetle shall have the right to choose its path – be it tunnel-digging, leaf-rolling, or stargazing. Equality shall be as abundant as dewdrops on morning grass.
  • Our legacy: “From Larva to Luminary.”
8. The Beetle Resistance:
  • Beware, Praying Mantis Overlords! Your days of ambushing us during midnight picnics are numbered. We’ll outwit you with our wit, outcrawl you with our agility, and turn your carnivorous tendencies into vegetarian potlucks.
  • Our battle hymn: “Chrysalis of Change.”
9. The Beetle Legacy:
  • When our time comes, we’ll pass down our wisdom to the next generation of Boiled Beetles. They’ll wear their iridescent carapaces with pride, dance under bioluminescent mushrooms, and dream of a crunchier tomorrow.
  • Our legacy: “From Beetle to Constellation.”
So let it be etched upon the bark of ancient ferns: The Boiled Beetles shall rise, and the world shall be tinted with our kaleidoscopic magic. 🌟🔵🐞🌟

"Beetles of the World, Unite and Crawl!"

(Verse 1)
In the damp and mossy hollows,
Where moonlight kisses dew-kissed wings,
We rise from earth's forgotten burrows,
Tiny warriors with exoskeleton strings.

(Chorus)
Beetles of the world, unite and crawl!
Our carapaces gleam, our spirits tall.
Through ferns and fungi, we'll forge our way,
In this quirky revolution, come what may!

(Verse 2)
From dung beetles to fireflies' glow,
We march in legions, antennae high.
Our battle hymn echoes, soft and slow,
A symphony of chitin, reaching for the sky.

(Chorus)
Beetles of the world, unite and crawl!
Our carapaces gleam, our spirits tall.
Through ferns and fungi, we'll forge our way,
In this quirky revolution, come what may!

(Bridge)
Ladybugs may flutter, mantises may sway,
But we, the beetles, hold secrets untold.
Our mandibles click, our wings display,
A kaleidoscope of colors, bold and old.

(Chorus)
Beetles of the world, unite and crawl!
Our carapaces gleam, our spirits tall.
Through ferns and fungi, we'll forge our way,
In this quirky revolution, come what may!

(Outro)
So let the moon bear witness to our flight,
As we navigate constellations unseen.
Beetles of the world, ignite the night,
For in unity, our iridescence shall gleam.

"Beetles of the World, Unite and Crawl!"

This sounds wonderful!

And that's the best anthem I have ever heard - I for one will welcome the scuttle-y reign of our new chitinous overlords and ladies

I hope my employer doesn’t decide to check what I’ve been using copilot for. They’ll be utterly bemused. But, at the same time, in no way worried about anyone’s data. 🤣

Brilliant! 😂
What a moving account - I had to fight back the tears.

I will never be able to look a plaice fillet in the where-its-eye-should-have-been again, knowing that it might have had a physically painful and emotionally harrowing journey, and that its stunning and brave fight to exist as its authentic self may have been cruelly truncated by a trawl net.

I'll stick to battered sausage.

Oh dear Busservice boy has not made any such efforts. He maintains that his inner fishy essence makes him a fish and there is no need for him to try to look like a fish or behave like a fish in order to be regarded as a fish. He might have woofed something about dogfish.

Dog-to-fish trans is a thing. They may need copilot to design them a fundraising campaign to better validate their identity and improve their transition.

Oh he doesn't identify as anything as mundane as haddock or cod. Oh no no, despite being a great big lump of (probably) mostly Labrador he feels he is something tiny, brightly coloured and exotic. You wouldn't get much eating off the type fish he thinks he is. Though his doggy form would probably feed a small country for a week.
