Is there such a thing as a GC Autism support charity?

DD has recently been diagnosed Autistic.

We're flailing and reach out for support to charities and I'm bothered by the fact that they all seem to be affiliated to Stonewall, and have the lines 'Autistic people are more likely to be gender fluid/gender questioning etc..'

Luckily she doesn't seem to be interested in such nonsense but I really want her (and us) to be able to access support without risking her mental health deteriorating further by any suggestion becoming a boy/NB might help.

Anyone know if any charities haven't been captured?

Every right to harass those with protected beliefs? I don’t think so. You can only do so because you hide and spy on the group. If you had a ‘right to do so’ you would not need to hide.

Though I doubt you are even part of the group and you are simply making up stories.

@plipplops I don’t know about mental health support, only that if you can find someone who follows evidence based practice and preferably NHS (which is usually some form of CBT). But as her immediate problem is navigating school without her BF, I wonder whether you could talk to the school / DD about interim extra support in school, or even a school buddy.

The courts have found that wild accusations of transphobia amount unlawful harassment and discrimination.

I have every right to report content I see on Facebook according to their policy if I believe it may be in breach. It will be their decision if it is in breach and if so what action to take.

Indeed, and showing a fair degree of hatred and bigotry towards members of a private group set up for autistic people who share a protected belief.

Not at all, very judgmental of you to presume that.

The group isn't for people with autism at all, it's a gender critical group with a lot of vile transphobia on it. I can see why it's set to private.

SaffronSpice · 11/02/2024 00:21

So you are not gender critical.

And you are not willing to say if you are autistic.

Yet you have decided to join this support group for vulnerable adults to spy on them. Gosh you sound like a lovely person and not at all inappropriate or creepy Hmm.

It's could barely be described as a support group at all, it's basically just Reddit's former Gender Critical sub.

In my view the group is hateful and could put vulnerable people at risk of harm. The group itself and much of its content has been reported to Facebook.

Prefer not to answer that, but I have concerns about the amount of transphobia in that group.

@TownGown, are you autistic yourself?

Sorry, edited, as the post was incorrect: I’m wondering whether the OP might be hyper focusing on whether someone is going to try to make their child trans or nonbinary in some way? It doesn’t seem like a logical concern, if their child has no interest in those issues. It would seem more logical to be concerned about getting autism support?

Seen a lot of vile content in the "GC autism" group I've had to report.

Also interesting one of the admin's profile image is a selfie of herself with Kelly Jay Keen, that says a lot about the group.

In my area, schools have a referral pathway online hub thing ly that they can use to refer children for counselling- there's also a special neurodiverse counselling/support option. You can self-refer, so can the GP and it all goes to the same group but we got a quicker response via school. The downside was that I wasn't able to vet the person.

Barnados also do ND counselling but the person we saw had a Stonewall Champion email footer. Kooth also refer to Mermaids.

Boomboom22 · 09/02/2024 17:06

I don't think most would raise it though tbh. They might affirm if she said she was a boy but I do hope the vast vast majority of therapists don't go around suggesting it.

SaffronSpice · 09/02/2024 12:35

Hate to say it but online mental health supports are even worse. Mind have plastered themselves in a pride flag and are directing people to stonewall and mermaids.

plipplops · 09/02/2024 11:56

If it wasn't depressing enough already, last weekend she broke up with her long term boyfriend. He was such a part of her daily routine, and supported her at school getting between classes and at lunch/break, as well as helping her regulate any time she needed it. She's absolutely fucked.

I was hoping to look for some kind of counselling for her as she's desperate to talk to someone other than us. I wanted to find someone with experience of ND kids as her reaction and distress is so bound up with her autism, so went to the Bristol Autistic Society to ask them to recommend someone private. Of the people they suggested:

One requires kids to have an EHCP (which we don't have)
One has a 4 month waiting list, and our crisis is right now
They sent a link to a directory of neurodiverse approved/experienced practitioners. One only deals with adults, and two say on their bio that they support gender affirming care.

I'm gobsmacked and feel totally at a loss. My vulnerable girl needs help, and the only options I have are on board with what I consider to be a huge safeguarding risk. I feel like I've gone down the rabbit hole?

Seems like there might be enough numbers for parents to start their own network / support group to discuss and share knowledge about their autistic children and keep it free from ideological influence of gender identity / transgenderism.

Autistic women are three times more likely to be sexually assaulted than their neurotypical counterparts.

That's shocking, especially when you consider how many of them that is, by the statistic you posted that nearly a third of all women have been or will be.

@NitroNine Those would be the same bunch of idiots who say functioning labels are ableist (along with the word idiot.) Very loud online, and seemingly incapable of understanding that there are autistic people living with far higher needs than them. It makes me very cross.

Oh, you missed 'autigender'. That's another barrel of laughs. 🙄

I don't know who mentioned masking, but got annoyed last week because someone on YouTube said that if you stop masking you'll lose all your friends and family. Considering I either know or suspect that most of them are on the autism/ADHD spectrum I don't think so. They know me and my foibles, and love me anyway.

Anyway. I do recommend Gender Critical Autistics on Facebook. I hope you can find a decent support group for your DD, @plipplops

Gah, why is everything in Zuckerberg's privacy-destroying data mine? I refuse to join it and block all its traffic in my browser.

Diagnosed autistic woman here.

Autistic women are three times more likely to be sexually assaulted than their neurotypical counterparts. A large part of this is because we are inherently vulnerable. We struggle to understand other people's intentions and fail to recognise threats and red flag behaviours. We struggle to recognise when our own behaviour is likely to be misinterpreted. We are often as children subjected to punishments and training that deter our natural behaviours, such as stimming, and are forced to endure continuous discomfort and pain, such as bright lights and uncomfortable clothes. We get used to being in distress and hiding it and not being allowed to leave or make ourselves more comfortable, so we don't leave when a sexual assailant makes us distressed.

The OP, having seen the safeguarding trainwrecks that are GIDS and Mermaids, is absolutely correct to demand that her vulnerable daughter be safeguarded. Her daughter is at three times the risk of a neurotypical girl.

By contrast, around three in ten women are victims of sexual violence.

This is just gender-critical speak, not everyone agrees with this.

Also interesting to note the OP's daughter has just been diagnosed with autism, and the very first priority OP has is to "find an autism charity that is gender critical".

<Musing as to why it is that children with autism are so much more likely to declare a gender identity>

Autistic people feel like we are "wrong" in the world and gender dysphoria is a high-profile type of "wrong feeling" right now. It's easy to seize on the first explanation that looks sensible, even if it's not. This is how all the world's religions came about: [thing we cannot explain] must be caused by the gods.

A while ago I saw a lecture about a cohort study - individuals who were ‘neurodiverse’ but had a range of diagnoses; autism, DCD, ADHD etc. They had done brain imaging studies and found no pattern distinguishing these different diagnosis. It was a webinar and a load of us were asking ‘does that mean the diagnostic groups (eg ‘autism’) are wrong? Sadly they ignored all those questions. They, and other studies, had however found groups - just groups that did not correspond with the current set of diagnoses.

I am convinced that ‘autism’ is not a single diagnoses but a set of similar symptoms belonging to a range of currently unrecognised conditions, of which the symptoms of DCD, ADHD etc are also part. People don’t actually have half a dozen comorbid conditions, they have one condition. It is a bit like having organisations/diagnoses/activists for TATT (Tired All The Time) rather than hypothyroidism, anaemia, depression, sleep apnoea, COPD, cancer…. Of course if the TATT organisation is well funded and a group of individuals are given a loud voice and lobbying power then those individuals won’t take kindly to being told ‘you have anaemia and need to take iron tablets and don’t need to have the same resources invested in you as those with COPD’.

I think I was in the same lecture! Really interesting. As Temple Grandin said, it’s all in the specifics…
I think most parents of profoundly autistic kids could benefit from joining a TATT group… off to see if I can join… if I can muster the energy!
