Starmer: "trans-inclusive" conversion therapy ban, "modernise" the GRA, all hate crime to be aggravated offences as part of making every child "proud and confident"

Exclusive in Diva, following a reception at a LGBT+ Labour event in Parliament on 29 Jan:

https://diva-magazine.com/2024/01/29/exclusive-keir-starmer-lgbtqia-rights/

"“We’ll strengthen the law, so every category of hate crime is treated as an aggravated offence,” Starmer said. “We’ll cut NHS waiting lists for LGBT+ people waiting for urgent physical and mental health care. We’ll modernise the Gender Recognition Act. We’ll implement a full, trans-inclusive, ban on all forms of conversion therapy. We fully support the view that conversion therapy is psychologically damaging abuse.”

“We are committed to a decade of national renewal and will work with all the organisations in this room tonight so every child can feel proud and confident in who they are, to stand up for LGBT+ rights at home and abroad and to get Britain’s future back.”

The mention of children is unclear but must have a background to the full speech? LGBT Labour hasn't tweeted about it but others have. Rayner and Dodds also in attendance.

If Starmer's lips are moving he's lying.

Flowers4me · 31/01/2024 15:09

So Adam, you assume that people want to believe that labour are 'just as bad' to justify voting for the tories. Well believe what you like, but for me its clear the labour party are not properly listening to women and if they won't listen and understand the issues we face, then I will go elsewhere (undecided at the moment). Women's rights are a big deal for me - I've witnessed the affects on women when their rights are trodden on and I've had enough of the shit that women are supposed to put up with. Labour need to get real and understand the barriers women face because until they do, they have no chance of winning my vote.

Just a reminder for this thread that the laws that were enacted that have enabled men to be in women's prisons etc were enacted under the last Labour Government.

Not only are Labour responsible for these laws, they're proud of it. Anneliese Dodds has said. ' Taken together, they are one of Labour’s crowning achievements, not just of the last period of government, of any period.'

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/jul/24/labour-will-lead-on-reform-of-transgender-rights-and-we-wont-take-lectures-from-the-divisive-tories

Thank you for that reminder Floisme. It is just another reason that posters have been rightfully suspicious of the seeming change of mind that never quite rang true and that it is was all linguistic obfuscation. Trying to convince as many people as possible that the party is 'for them'.

lifeturnsonadime · 31/01/2024 14:13

Well Adam, if you don't think saying one thing to appease the TRAs and saying another to appease women who want Labour to put women and children first makes the leader of the opposition party untrustworthy on this issue then that's up to you.

AdamRyan · 31/01/2024 14:10

lifeturnsonadime · 31/01/2024 13:38

But in the meantime you will vote for a party who is being unequivocal about what it feels about women.

I actually believe Kemi on this, why would she lie about it?

What IS unbelievable is that Starmer , a human rights lawyer no less, has seen the adverse affects that Labour enacted laws have had on vulnerable women and couldn't care less about vulnerable women. I don't care that you think that Labour = good and worthy and virtuous. They have lost my trust.

The fact that I can't abide some of the Tory policies either shows how we, as a society but particularly women, are being failed by party politics.

I don't think labour = good and worthy and virtuous.

I think the current bunch Conservatives are venal liars, as has been proven in numerous legal judgements, inquiries and investigations. There appears to be a culture of lying.

I think lots of people want to believe Labour/Starmer are "just as bad" so they can feel reassured in doing what they want to, e.g. voting for a bunch of venal, self serving liars because they are the right wing option.

I haven't seen any evidence at all of Starmer lying. So I personally don't understand this refrain that he's not trustworthy but the Conservatives are Confused

anyolddinosaur · 31/01/2024 13:55

@AdamRyan Judge politicians by actions, not words. Kemi has been instrumental in getting out school's guidance, Kier wont even speak to women. Not really interested in whether she is plotting to be the next leader of her party, I'm not a tory party member,

ResisterRex · 31/01/2024 13:54

Kemi saying she's not a plotter, while being a member of a group about plotting and allegedly actually plotting shows she's not reliable.

The Crerar article does not provide evidence of this. At best, Kemi is in an existing WhatsApp group which is having new, unproven intentions laid on the group. Like a new name, which is in quote marks, giving it the feel of having been lawyered before the article was published. There's no evidence she's taken part in discussions about "plotting". At best there is some argument that there are others (Gove) reportedly around her, with views she's best as leader. But even then it's unclear if she and he have made up and are friendly again. For an "exclusive", it's vague at best.

Adam, but I think “ committed ensuring women have single-sex spaces, and not harming children” counts as doing something. I concede it’s a low bar, but apparently one Kier isn’t prepared to rise to

Yep

lifeturnsonadime · 31/01/2024 13:40

AdamRyan · 31/01/2024 13:36

Yes, because the point of government is to piss off the opposition.
Heaven forbid they actually did something for the benefit of the people in the country. Its all about who's big dog.

FFS Adam, if Kemi becomes PM it won't be to piss Labour off.

The fact that it will be an embarrassment to Labour is 100% down to THEIR failings.

Kemi saying she's not a plotter, while being a member of a group about plotting and allegedly actually plotting shows she's not reliable.

My issue is the constant characterisation of Conservative MPs as trustworthy and "standing up for women", despite all the mountains of evidence that there is a culture of lying in the party and over 13 years they have pursued numerous policies that have actively harmed women. I think its a calculated move to use this board to exaggerate a wedge issue to the benefit of the Conservative party.

People can vote for who they want but they need to be informed and this "at least the Conservatives know what a woman is!!@!" posting is not an accurate reflection of what's actually being pursued.

When the Conservatives have an agreed policy, or even better an item in the King's speech, about protecting women's rights I'll pay attention. At the moment they are all talk, no action and they have the majority to take whatever action they wanted.

But in the meantime you will vote for a party who is being unequivocal about what it feels about women.

I can see Michael Gove's point (not words I ever expected to write). Having a black female Prime Minister who is committed to ensuring women have single sex spaces and not harming children would really piss the Labour Party off, it would make their failures to protect women and children from gender ideology even more visible, wouldn't it?

I want to know why Kemi being 'allegedly' plotting to oust Sunak means that she's not doing the right thing by women? Quite bizarre.

Edited for major typo!

But given that the Graun is now far from trustworthy, I'd want to see proof.

Its being reported everywhere cher amd she hasn't denied it

So all of us that said that Labour couldn't be trusted on women's rights were right then? Colour me shocked!

And it is shocking. Labour can't be immune to the impact that this ideology has had on women. They must KNOW what has happened in recent Employment Tribunals and how women have been treated, even in rape crisis centres.

They can fuck right off if they think they will get my vote.

Such a disappointment.

Yup.

Also, this We’ll cut NHS waiting lists for LGBT+ people waiting for urgent physical and mental health care is basically saying if you are a lesbian or gay man or bisexual you will get prioritised for NHS health care. I know that is not what he means, but I can't rate a politician who speaks so inaccurately.

This week Kemi said she didn't agree with plotters trying to oust Sunak, then was found to be part of a WhatsApp group called "Evil Plotters"!!
How would you know what she actually believes?

I was in a WhatsApp group called secret squirrels

i am not a squirrel

ArabellaScott · 31/01/2024 13:05

Who the fuck knows, innocenteyeballs? Words don't seem to mean anything much at all to the Labour high head yins.

Theinnocenteyeballsinthesky · 31/01/2024 13:00

and I’m assuming when Labour talk about conversion therapy, they take the stonewall definition ie only gender affirming therapy is allowed - no discussion or exploration of why someone maybe believe they are the opposite sex

Floisme · 31/01/2024 12:59

And I see it's not going too well on Twitter for Dodds. This is what happens when you try and ride two horses at once.

ArabellaScott · 31/01/2024 12:51

'A pleasure to join@Keir_Starmer
and@LGBTLabour
to mark LGBT+ History Month. While Tory politicians descend into the gutter, Labour is steadfast in our support for LGBT+ people. Together we'll ban conversion therapy, strengthen hate crime laws and tackle health inequalities.'

Dodds, an hour ago on X.
