Starmer: "trans-inclusive" conversion therapy ban, "modernise" the GRA, all hate crime to be aggravated offences as part of making every child "proud and confident"

Exclusive in Diva, following a reception at a LGBT+ Labour event in Parliament on 29 Jan:

https://diva-magazine.com/2024/01/29/exclusive-keir-starmer-lgbtqia-rights/

"“We’ll strengthen the law, so every category of hate crime is treated as an aggravated offence,” Starmer said. “We’ll cut NHS waiting lists for LGBT+ people waiting for urgent physical and mental health care. We’ll modernise the Gender Recognition Act. We’ll implement a full, trans-inclusive, ban on all forms of conversion therapy. We fully support the view that conversion therapy is psychologically damaging abuse.”

“We are committed to a decade of national renewal and will work with all the organisations in this room tonight so every child can feel proud and confident in who they are, to stand up for LGBT+ rights at home and abroad and to get Britain’s future back.”

The mention of children is unclear but must have a background to the full speech? LGBT Labour hasn't tweeted about it but others have. Rayner and Dodds also in attendance.

And if you vote Labour, you can have all of that plus the destruction of what's left of women's rights and child safeguarding.

Why is it so hard for some people to understand? Labour haven't said one thing about how they'll fix all the issues you think are more important. All they've said is how they are going to make the gender mess even worse.

Exactly

I get it why people are desperate to vote Labour; andf I know that there will most likely be a Labour landside at the election. But i also think many people are going to feel very let down when there isn't the revolution everyone is expecting, or hoping for. Starmer has committed to most of the Tory spending pledges, and has rowed back on virtually every Corbynite type proposal he used to be in favour of.

The main one he hasn't rowed back on, but has doubled down on instead, is Gender Self ID.

So, in terms of ecomonics not that much will really change in any obvious way. Fuel prices will still be high, as will the general cost of living. The NHS has issues which cannot be improved without major structural change. Covid was the last nail in the coffin. And it was Labour, remember, calling for longer and harder lockdowns, including for children and schools - which is now proving to have been very damaging.

Add to that rising tensions in the world - with the possibility of war opening up on several fronts - Starmer is going to have to be at the top of his game from the start.

This is very true. Labour also haven't said they'll remove the benefits cap and for the life of me, I cannot understand why that doesn't enrage the Labour base.

Apart from self-ID and taxing education - which is surely going to have to apply to all fees including university ones - there isn't a difference between the two.

In addition to not having any discernible plan on immigration and small boats (needed for the swing voters at least) Labour also seems vulnerable to losing their base due to their position on Gaza.

And yet the one clear difference is they want to let men who say magic words steal all our stuff. Then throw us in prison if they protest. Why are they dying on this hill? It's baffling.

@AdamRyan
I'm not a man and couldn't give a shiny shit who you vote for
I object to smears and misinformation. And on a personal level I'm terrified what another 5 years of tory corruption, lying, incompetence, and financial mismanagement will do to the UK. Lots of people are on the bare bones of their arses. Dying waiting for treatment. Kids can't get mental health support. Can't recruit enough teachers. Shit in the seas and rivers. More and more women and children in poverty. Why anyone is voting for more of that I don't understand

Well said and same

Impending war(s) are probably going to be absolutely critical.

I'd like to know how both parties plan to handle those.

Which economic policies from Labour are you looking to to change things?

Labour dont need policies, people will vote for them generally knowing they are Good and on the Right Side.

But I concur that I wouldn't trust anything the Graun prints these days even if it was confirmed by 3 Justices of the Peace, the Master of the Rolls and the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Particularly not the latter!

So you are terrified about those things, but you are going to vote for them on the basis Sunak says women don't have penises? Confused

I am, because I don’t trust a word Starmer & Labour say. Many of the women & men I know will also not vote Labour because of their attitude towards the rights of women and the safeguarding of children.

They should be begging women to vote for them, they should be apologizing to Rosie Duffield and others for the behaviour of many of their MPs. Instead they are treating us, and our concerns , with as much contempt as Labour , Lib Dems , and SNP/Greens have done in Scotland.
I , for one , won’t be fooled by Labour.

It only ever goes one way. We're only ever a few hours away from the next disaster hitting the headlines and every time it does, public awareness jumps further and politicians jump when their PR gets grotty.

It'll happen to the Tories too, just the same, but they've done enough foot dragging and pausing for thought that they won't be entirely left with their pants down in the way of the other parties.

EasternStandard · 31/01/2024 22:19

Froodwithatowel · 31/01/2024 22:18

The plus side is that if Starmer DOES get in, the court cases will keep on rolling, the Cass report will arrive, women will get ever louder and angrier and more vocal in growing numbers as he tries to escalate the batshit, more and more disasters will stack up, the general public get ever more aware and pissed off, and this will be a thorn in his side the size of bloody Texas.

I shall enjoy it. But he really won't.

I hope he has an Isla Bryson type political hit

Maybe he’ll get the splinters out

ArabellaScott · 31/01/2024 22:18

EwwSprouts · 31/01/2024 21:16

If he was to do a complete reverse ferret I just wouldn't buy it now. Another hoping for a GC independent.

This is the trouble. With their doublespeak and havering all these succeeded in doing is losing everyone's trust.

What it means is -

If you think gender ideology is particularly bad here it’s not just a U.K. problem

In fact we are likely ahead at turning the tide

Likely not for long under Starmer though, depressingly

@AdamRyan can you hear yourself? It's the equivalent of saying "You are going to vote for them on the basis that Sunak says the Earth is round and orbits the sun? Why does it matter if Starmer says the Earth is flat and the sun rotates round it?" If you don't know why it matters that Starmer says that women can have penises when he knows perfectly well they can't, then anyone on here arguing with you is wasting their time.

I'm not sure what that's supposed to mean. We could have had better protection for women, in prisons, rape crisis centers, toilets, the NHS, academia, the civil service, everywhere really, regardless of what might happen in other countries. Some of it is now coming via tribunals and legal action. Shouldn't have been necessary.

And possibly wouldn't have been if the Labour Party hadn't introduced the legal fiction of the GRC which allows men to be legal females back in 2004.

Shame that now, even after years of seeing the impact that has on women, they'd rather have rapists in women's prisons. Because after all, any man, can be a woman.

SidewaysOtter · 31/01/2024 22:06

Wanna borrow my jackboots? 😃

@SinnerBoy I’m not sure I’d suit a shaved head…

SidewaysOtter · 31/01/2024 22:05

It doesn't feel anything like 1997 did, IMO.

I agree. In 1997 - the first election in which I could vote - it felt like the incumbent Tory party were so far behind the times. We had Cool Britannia, Oasis v Blur in the Britpop battles, alcopops and the 60s were fashionable again. We also had a government that was male, pale and stale (sorry Sir John, in hindsight I think you were a decent chap) with its roots in the 1970s and woefully out of touch with the electorate on everything.

That’s not where we are today.

I suspect there are a lot of people who will vote Tory on the quiet, often because they won’t admit to it. If I looked at my social media feeds, with its very middle-class lefty bubble, in the last elections, you’d think we’d have had a Labour landslide or a Lab/Green coalition. We had neither, in fact the last election saw Johnson get a thumping majority and look how divisive HE was.

DuesToTheDirt · 31/01/2024 22:04

@EasternStandard oh I see. Yes, some other places are even worse, sadly!

After stating a lot of utter nonsense, bloody Sir Keir managed to tell us that "women are adult females" - notice he left out the 'human' part.
Funny that- as it's Labour who let Rotherham grooming gangs happen.
I'll be voting against Labour, Lib Dems and the Greens - I'm voting Tory for the second time ever.

But how can anyone vote for the Tories on the basis of protecting women's rights? They have been in power in Westminster for what feels like a billion years, and they have allowed us to get into the current sorry mess.
