A group are taking the above to court after the pub refused to serve them and the barman assaulted one gay man.

The group were told the pub "wouldn't serve terfs."

Just reread my post from 10.59. It should read 'Glinner's a sleb'! 🤣 Not 'a sleep'. That'll teach me to avoid using slang.

It's all about Graham Linehan again, I see🙄
The initial reporting of this story wasn't so focussed on one individual, was it?
I can't even remember being aware that he was present. But now it's all about him, and his 'anti-trans' notoriety will colour readers' reactions 'oh well if GL was there, they must have been transphobes'..

Sure you know what the IT is like, any story with a connection to an Irish person living abroad, or who might have a profile abroad, means they’ll write the article with a focus on the Irish person, especially given that Glinner would be considered by the IT to have a higher profile than the other patrons who were treated so badly.

It’s lazy journalism. God forbid they actually write an article solely about feminists being abused by pub staff 🙄

MarieDeGournay · 15/10/2024 11:53

lcakethereforeIam it even calls KJK an activist rather than anti-trans. Rereading it I'm actually pleasantly surprised.

I agree about that, I posted somewhere else about the Irish Times showing a bit more balance these days, and how they refer to KJK is a good example.

For a long time it looked as if everything had to be run by TENI [v influential Irish TRA organisation] for comment, e.g. TENI got the final word on Cass when it was reported in the IT.

TENI had an inordinate amount of power in shaping gender legislation in Ireland, they were taken as the one and only source of knowledge and truth by the legislators drafting and discussing proposed laws; it's shocking to read the transcripts of the committee and chamber debates where politicians of all parties outdid each other in placing TENI on a pedestal. Even some of the 'independent witnesses' e.g. medical experts deferred to TENI's 'superior knowledge.
If the IT now has them off speed-dial, that's progress, but there's still an awful lot of TENI legacy to be unpicked.

But to be positive: yes I agree lcakethereforeIam, green shootsSmile

lcakethereforeIam · 15/10/2024 10:59

It's clickbait and, I'd say, laziness on the part of the person who wrote the article. Glinner's a sleep, so he'll generate more clicks than a, relatively, anonymous GC woman or gay man. Then Glinner also comes with a load of baggage, the interpretation of which will vary depending on which side of sanity the debate you are. Saves the journalist writing about it. Not much help if you're coming to it cold.

Edited to add

I think the article is pretty balanced. The first sentence is

Lead cases among discrimination claims by Father Ted writer Graham Linehan and other women’s rights campaigners

My bold, it even calls KJK an activist rather than anti-trans. Rereading it I'm actually pleasantly surprised.

Abhannmor · 15/10/2024 10:32

It's the Irish Times and Glinner is a Dub. Their editorial board is pretty woke I'd say - but the readership not so much?

The reports give the impression of a very charged situation. We were mainly middle aged women out for a drink in a Sunday afternoon. It was all very affable until they realised we’d been at LWS.

Kellie Jay didnt go to the bar, she had to get home.

The staff went bananas when they saw Glinner.

It's really valuable to have a first-hand report from you, thank you VaddaABeetch

I've been looking at the reports in the NI press - it's as if the whole incident revolved around Graham Linehan😠
Because so many press stories are word-for-word identical [how is that not plagiarism?] they all use the same neutral language as the Irish Times, 'controversial activist' 'Women's rights' etc.

I was at the LWS event & in the pub afterwards. The staff were absolutely spoiled oiks. When they realised we’d been at the event they were refusing to serve us & trying to take glasses from us. A barman head butted a 75 year old man.

Father Ted writer part of group suing over alleged discrimination in Belfast pub – The Irish Times
I hope it's not behind a paywall?
'Women’s rights campaigners including Father Ted writer Graham Linehan were allegedly subjected to discrimination in a Belfast pub because of their gender critical beliefs, a court heard on Monday.'

The Irish Times has been notoriously unbalanced on gender issues - either not reporting things at all if they supported GC views, or giving the right of reply/last word to groups like the TENI, a trans group which has an inordinate amount of influence in Ireland - all their input into gender legislation was taken on board wholesale without a hint of balance or analysis by lawmakers.

So apart from the questionable centre-staging of Glinner, the opening paragraph refers to 'women's rights campaigners' not 'anti-trans campaigners', KJK is referred to only as a 'controversial activist', and the report in general is objective. That's progress!

Don't expect a swift resolution, though:
Simon Chambers said: “My clients are delighted the matter is being progressed in a productive and orderly fashion towards the eventual hearing date, which I anticipate will be in early 2025.”

When I first saw the garden, Glinner hadn't said he was involved.

Hopefully it'll keep the carrots growing. Currently at 7500.

(And for those of you that like to spend your days screaming at the computer with your emotional support animal, it'll be interesting to see how Northern Irish courts work!)

That might work to keep the case mentioned in the press: with women on their own, the media finds it mildly interesting; involve a famous man and the media considers it more interesting. Annoying that women fighting sexism isn’t considered newsworthy but 'man fights sexism' is 🤷‍♀️

UtopiaPlanitia · 26/01/2024 16:51

Added a few seeds to this garden - glad to see action being taken to remind providers of goods and services that GC women (and men) have rights.

Done. Little acorns and all that. Robinsons is a fine pub. But there's plenty more in Belfast.

This is disgraceful, though, and hopefully publicity will help.
