Unfortunately as renewal is in January (and the 2023 figures may have been late/end of month (while 2024 was 4th Jan) this may not be quite such a severe drop. Still a big fall. But worth checking at end of month? Nice of WPATH to make it so easy.

The membership section of the site also says the default is to be listed in that directory. There may be more who have asked not to be on Directory this year. Which also raises interesting questions.

Yes, I fell down that 'what? What does that mean rabbit hole'. Again

End of January has passed so a search on members shows this has grown a bit. Now its 2017. So (if the researcher was saying numbers listed end Jan 2023 in the same directory was 4119) this is a halving of membership figures. Less impressive figure but still looks significant. UK numbers were 93 in January 2023 (in article) and then 34 on 4th January 2024. Now 46. So similar drop in UK. US also.

Yes Utopia. His experience gives him a unique perspective. The 'turn arounds' and how they come to have realisations are always interesting. It obviously stuck with me. I'll have to listen again.

I think this is the right episode with Robert Wintemute- Canadian professor/lawyer based at King's College-that I'm thinking of. He started out with WPATH I believe? Or was at least a yogyakarta signee.
It's been a while since I listened- but it came ro mind and I'm sure I recall him covering early WPATH here.
Very interesting either way though (and lovely voice):

I listened to that episode before Xmas and found it really interesting. Wintermute’s journey from endorsing the Yogyakarta Principles to understanding how damaging they are to women, children and LGB people is fascinating. He seems determined to work now in support of helping those that his previous work is harming.

It's a feminist current episode. Don't know why there's no image on the link

Just, just bizarre.

The figures I'm waiting on are the Mermaids books and to a less extent the Stonewall finances.

The charity commission will need to fix their website so people can actually submit their accounts first...

Funnily enough at the end of the Polly Carmichael WPATH video up thread there is an altercation where a transman snatches the mic from De Vries of the Dutch Clinic (who seems to be the host of the event) and then announces that all the doctors have to vacate, not just the room but the entire floor, so that it can become a trans and non binary ‘inclusive’ space…

Foreshadowing for current events? 😆

(Skip to 36.30 ish to hear the transman kicking off):

I am sorry if I'm not sure exactly what the membership type would be (pediatricians, parents, pharmacists, pharma lobbyists, etc.) but if the membership roster drop has higher amounts of pediatricians and/or pharmacists, I wonder if they have some insight into the upcoming findings of the the AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics), which is currently doing a review of the research. "...the influential group of doctors also took an extra step of commissioning a systematic review of medical research on the treatments, following similar efforts in Europe that found uncertain evidence for their effectiveness in adolescents."

That’s an interesting thought!

WPATH started out as the Harry Benjamin International Gender Dysphoria Association and was a professional org for people working with transsexual patients.

At some point, trans activists were able to join and by 2007 (transman, law lecturer, founder of Press for Change and ‘architect of the GRA’) Stephen Whittle was the first ‘non medical professional’ WPATH chair.

i just had a look (and yes, if you join WPATH you automatically have membership of EPATH/USPATH) and they have two tiers of membership (that cost the same). Non professional members do not have voting rights, however, if you look at the areas of study that make students eligible for future ‘professional membership’ it includes ‘queer studies’ and ‘anthropology’ 🤦‍♀️

So basically all the non-medical-professionals who create their own small transactivist orgs (eg Mermaids) can get full membership.

I wonder if WPATH’s membership will be whittled down (pun intended) until it’s just the non medically qualified activists left? Will WPATH the professional or die a slow death after being eaten alive by the Gender Diversity Vampire?

These insane doctors putting all their mutilation of children on tiktok was also an extremely stupid move. Noone would claim "this never happens" anymore.

Greengreenpastures · 18/01/2024 21:30

We all know the committees that made policy for the AAP were hijacked by ideologues like every other organization captured in the past decade. I imagine large numbers of the rest of the membership finally want to see medical evidence.

I think much of the medical profession was in the dark about how extreme medicalization had become in this area as the rest of the general public. Activists always liked to present their policies as a done deal as we know.

ArabellaScott · 18/01/2024 18:55

So you're saying that the organisation finally revealed Eunuchgender as valid and shared links to a site that contained thousands of fantasies of CSA, only to have lots of members leave?

Huh.

@NumberTheory fair enough maths is never my strong point, especially percentages.

However US 3,104 down to 1,234 is nearly a 2,000 drop which from a global 4,119 is quite a lot. But as I said, maths and me aren't friends.

Yes, it’s a hell of a drop amoung everyone including Americans. Not trying to put a downer on that.

I gather the pacific branch of WPATH is going strong. Plenty of profitable woo in NZ.

Will we set up a crowd funder for them?

Hang on, we've had Julie Bindel's "Help JKR to learn to write" crowdfunder and now a WPATH support funder. I'm not sure I can rinse my bank account sufficiently to reflect how strongly I feel about these causes twice in one week.
