Labour candidate suspended for 'transphobia'

Labour’s London region has suspended the party’s candidate for a closely-contested council by-election in Hackney following allegations of “transphobia“.
Party members were told by email early this morning by Hackney’s borough organiser that “all planned campaign sessions” in the Cazenove ward had been cancelled, including those that were to have taken place today.
A Labour source has confirmed that the candidate, Laura Pascal (front right in photo), has been “administratively suspended”, which means a complaint has been made about her by another party member and a decision taken to investigate it.
The timing of the suspension means there is not enough time to nominate a different candidate in time for the by-election, which will be held next Thursday. This means that if Pascal wins, she will sit as an independent councillor. The source confirmed that Labour will do no further campaigning for her.

I read the Black Mumsnetters thread that I think @pickledandpuzzled is referring to, and the complaint about co-opting another group's struggle to win debating points (my interpretation) did make sense to me. I thought it was well explained. At least one poster on that thread also made the point that some TRAs do the same thing.

the race issue has been described as white feminists only caring about black women and racism when it’s a tool in the trans debate.

I find it hard to believe that those who use these comparisons, whether the Rachel Dolezal one or the dressing up one, are saying this because they "care".

Its about saying there are parallels.

Its about believing in reality of facts, rather than fantasies.

It doesn't co-opt Black women, it acknowledges that the groupings by sex or race or anything else are based on a lived reality.

But it would never occur to me somebody saying that was in any way indicating they were saying they "cared" about racism. That's seems much to generous. :(

Ereshkigalangcleg · 15/01/2024 21:01

Re: the racist accusation. She liked a tweet someone else posted comparing a man in blackface with Dylan Mulvaney. It looked very much to me that the young men piling on her were combing through her tweets and likes to find whatever they could, following someone posting the tweet where she said that "trans women are not female".

In the Evening Standard now, maybe it will make the nationals as well

Totally. And then since it's Monday we'll play the Northolt Bagshot Convention in memory of the Marquess of Blitheringholm, and I'll take a sharp slide to Tottenham Court Road.

Which gives me Mornington Crescent.

Ah, now. If you're innocent, you'll be wearing a green/white/violet scarf but it'll be the right kind of scarf in an ironic nod towards Genderqueer identity reclaiming the colours for all genuine women, even those with penises and beards.

If you're guilty, you'll be wearing a Green white violet scarf like the suffragetttes to pretend you're standing up for women, but that's bad because women are dog whistles and anyway we know you're bad because bigot/old/viper/phobe.

See?

@Boomboom22 @IwantToRetire the race issue has been described as white feminists only caring about black women and racism when it’s a tool in the trans debate.

There was a post on black mnetters complaining about forced teaming and being co-opted by white feminists to attack trans sisters. Or similar.

It’s not a universal sentiment but I can appreciate some people would find it infuriating, if they felt racism wasn’t taken sufficiently seriously.

Chaffgoldffinch · 15/01/2024 16:13

"After Laura Pascal is called out for her ‘gender critical’ transphobia, she goes campaigning in Cazenove ward wearing a scarf as a BLATANT dogwhistle taunt to trans people!"

I can't keep up with the fatwas. Do we get whipped for not wearing a scarf or for wearing the wrong colour of scarf?

The racist accusation is because of comparing tw / drag to blackface.

I thought the comparison people made was that Rachel Dolezal, ie someone white presenting as Black and that no one accepted her right to do that, so why would it be okay to say you cant change race, but you can change sex.

Drag and blackface aren't about saying that actually you have changed sex or race, it is about a performance appropriating and making comic stereotypes about sex or race.

So if people have been comparing trans to drag or blackface, that is saying being trans is just a comedy act, although each act can be said to be sexist or racists.

Whereas we know that the trans agenda is that people can actually change sex.

So if that was the comparison it was about ridicule not racism.

Boomboom22 · 15/01/2024 17:22

The racist accusation is because of comparing tw / drag to blackface. I don't think that is racist, more like a fairly accurate way of explaining why its offensive especially if you then go into women's toilets / win awards for women in business.

But if you believe twaw then it is offensive perhaps.

IwantToRetire · 15/01/2024 17:09

If the LP take her back it will be knowing and therefore publicly accepting her views (however grudgingly)

Well yes, because as we know what she is saying has now be stated by the legal system to be a protected belief.

That is what is so puzzling. Why have Labour accepted this as a genuine complaint.

Many people are pointing out that she was known to have said this last year, and despite this was picked as the candidate.

But have just seen, as now the London papers are reporting it that there seems to have been some local flyposting saying she was not only transphobic but racist.

I know not everyone is on twitter but no time to do further searching at the moment but you can see an image of it in this tweet https://twitter.com/Cat_Wigs/status/1746851984286560298

This is an article from a local Hackney papers which shows that other candidates are piling in on her (not the Tories). As someone said upthread it could be close run. https://www.hackneycitizen.co.uk/2024/01/15/labour-suspends-cazenove-by-election-candidate-allegation-transphobia/

And suspect that most of those voting wont know about all of this and will just tick her name as on the voting slip it will still say she is the Labour candidate.

So it is really whether the combined votes of the long time Labour voters and the incoming wokeratti will be the majority.

Labour suspends Cazenove by-election candidate following allegation of transphobia

Laura Pascal will sit as an independent if she wins on Thursday, party source confirms

If the LP take her back it will be knowing and therefore publicly accepting her views (however grudgingly). If we want to wrest the Labour Party back from the clutches of the TRAs it’ll be because they think that’s what the voters want - so show them it is, I say.

IwantToRetire · 15/01/2024 16:38

Why would that be a bad thing? You’d still have a councillor who supports women’s rights.

Because I dont think women should have to put up with the shit they get in the Labour Party.

I know many women are loyal to the Party, but can you imagine the impact if all women resigned!

If she was an independent she could just focus on her politics, not have to navigate the the party hacks etc..

Boomboom22 · 15/01/2024 16:35

I think she's the best option ilas lib dem are 2nd and they are complete lunatics when it comes to women. Or if you can't support someone who is labour and would return then any other tw are not w candidate, tory?

maltravers · 15/01/2024 16:35

I agree Loobijee and it would send such a great message to the Labour Party - despite your lily livered collusion with the witchfinders we’ve elected her anyway, she represents our views you berks.

LoobiJee · 15/01/2024 16:33

“And if I had a vote I would be torn, because yes she could get in as an Independent and then be taken back by Labour.”

Why would that be a bad thing? You’d still have a councillor who supports women’s rights.

If she doesn’t get elected then the LibDems will get that council seat and the LDs don’t support women’s rights.

IwantToRetire · 15/01/2024 16:27

Thanks for info re mimmy - more and more its like there are just a few individuals going round creating all this turmoil.

But obviously the real problem is all the willing followers giving they a status and credibility they dont deserve.

And if I had a vote I would be torn, because yes she could get in as an Independent and then be taken back by Labour.

I just dont understand this loyalty to Labour.

Has she released any statement or even her ward Labour Party.

Maybe she will gain some votes from elsewhere from disaffected voters, although i suspect those politically motivated enough to vote in the Hackney local elections may be TWAW. OTOH I’m an old pinko and would vote for her if I were in Hackney (I’m not). There must be others like me…

MarkWithaC · 15/01/2024 15:40

maltravers · 15/01/2024 15:35

@MarkWithaC , Laura P is still on the ballot I think? If so, a vote for her would be a vote in favour of sanity and the application of the Equality Act. It would also show Keir Starmer we won’t stand for this nonsense and would be one in the eye for the Witchfinders.

In fact on the Hackney council website she's still showing as the Labour candidate. Emblematic of the efficiency and response speed of my dear local council generally.
Yes, you're right, I should vote for her as an indie. I just don't like the idea of the Lib Dems or the Greens, both of whom are on the TWAW bandwagon, making gains. But as Labour now don't have a candidate, I suppose there's nothing I can do.

ArabellaScott · 15/01/2024 15:38

Helleofabore · 15/01/2024 11:37

Isn't Mimmy Helen Islan?

I didn't think Mimmy was a Green sock.

Edited

Yes.

ArabellaScott · 15/01/2024 15:37

I'd bloody love a candidate who was willing to stand up for women, whatever party she (or he) stood for. (Within reason, before anyone accuses me of aligning with the Raving Evil Bastards Party by omission.)

maltravers · 15/01/2024 15:35

MarkWithaC · 15/01/2024 15:11

This is my ward. I don't know who the fuck to vote for now.
And it is still a demographically mixed area, although at least partially gentrified these days. From my own small experience, there are TWAW people about and also people like me who are sick of it all. Can't really say which way the ward leans as a whole.
Oh, and it's not just Labour/Tories. The Lib Dems have won in the past and have made great gains. The Greens tend to do well. The Tories generally limp in behind them.

I've emailed Keir Starmer to remind him about the Equality Act.
