Kate doesn’t want Prince George to go to Eton – and for once I agree with her | Zoe Williams | The Guardian

Sorry if there is another thread on this article by Zoe Williams which is rather extraordinary on a number of counts, but especially confusing is the following:

"Which isn’t to say that nothing good came of it – my experience of an all-girls’ school, followed by twice as long as a trustee of a prison charity, informed a lot of my politics, including why I became a transgender ally. Before I had thought seriously about trans rights, and the immeasurable preciousness of any human being with the courage to live their most meaningful and truthful life, I thought: “Wait, are you saying all-female spaces are kinder? Purer? Inherently less violent? More supportive? Are you joking? Are you out of your mind?”"

I think I might be struggling with my comprehension today - but I don't think gender critical feminists are necessarily saying all-female spaces are kinder or purer - although, yes, almost certainly inherently less violent. It seems like a conflation of different points flung together to construct a straw man argument and entirely misunderstanding safeguarding as a concept in the process. Is this deliberate? Or is she not able to see this? Baffling.

Genuinely think that if Woman's Hour is going to give this much uncritical airtime to GCs, then for balance the BBC should have a Trans Ally hour

Does she never watch the BBC or something? She seems to be unfamiliar with their programming.

Also “for balance” if she’s going to use “GCs” then shouldn’t she also use “TRAs”?

I searched for this but may have missed if anyone screenshotted this splendid riposte to ZW re: need for more Woman's Hour invitations to trans + ally guests.

And she continues, this time being horrible to Sharron Davies. Has Zoe ever actually campaigned for anything? She complains about GC women and how mean we all are but has ever actually campaigned for trans rights? Beyond whinging about women in a column. I don’t think she’d do as Sharron has done and risked her income for a cause she cares about.

That's interesting, my post is now displayed....

I think their fingers must be so firmly plugged in their ears that the tips have touched.

Sizzlysausage · 24/01/2024 13:27

My mum is unfortunately quite deaf. She sometimes tries to cover up for this when she hasn't heard something and pretends that she has. It can lead to some very strange conversations and make her seem a bit mad (I mean that in a nice way). Anyway, I am trying to make a rather convoluted metaphor here. It's like Zoe Williams (and others) have stuck their fingers in their ears so they simply can't and won't hear anything resembling logic and it makes them seem .... well, a bit mad!

I think biological female journalists at The Guardian are now required to insert at least one "I'm not GC, honest" reference into all of their articles lest they be Suzanne Moore-d.

Yes, definitely. Unfortunately it means they end up churning out things that don’t make sense thereby compromising any journalistic integrity they may have once had 🤷‍♀️

MrsTwatInAHat · 23/01/2024 20:40

I know - she's a similar age to me. I used to marvel at her lack of logical thought processes when we were both younger too!

MrsTwatInAHat · 23/01/2024 18:13

ZW isn’t even that young, and is pretty traditionally educated, so I don’t know why she is so devoid of critical thinking ability but it’s not new. I have been getting riled by her total non-sequiturs and logic fails and wrong-end-of-stick grabbing for decades - since I used to actually buy the guardian, and that was ages ago.

Her woman’s hour trans tweet is funny in how it belies that this is really about her, not trans people. Me, give airtime to me, so I can show pure I am in my allyship! Or maybe she does actually realise that WH has interviewed a lot more TW than GC women, so saying trans people would make no sense (but that amount of thought wouldn’t be typical).

She makes Caitlin Moran look like Andrea Dworkin. Does she really buy this ridiculous line that being opposed to gender stereotypes and wanting to defend women’s and homosexual rights is all motivated by hating trans people for the sake of it? Why would it be? It’s such a shallow playground concept and accusation.

She's 50.

MagpiePi · 09/01/2024 14:51

I'm puzzled by the logic she has employed to shoehorn in her trans allyship.

Is it this?
>I had a bad experience in a single sex school therefore all single sex spaces/groups involve the members being nasty to each other.
But, mixed gender (I think she means mixed sex) groups tend to be nicer to their members, therfore allowing men into women's prisons/DV shelters/lesbian bars etc stops the women being nasty to each other.

In conclusion: Women need men who pretend to be women in their groups to stop them being mean to each other?

Have I got it right?

I interpreted it as “I hate other women, so fuck them and their gender-based rights”, but I suspect that isn’t how she intended it to land.

MrsTwatInAHat · 23/01/2024 18:50

And all that happened because Jo dares to think women literally exist as a sex class and that men aren’t women. Which most people think and is backed up by the evidence, and is kind of core to the whole concept of a programme called Woman’s Hour.

However, I really, really do hope WH take Zoe up on it and invite her to discuss the topic with Jo, or Helen Joyce, or Kathleen Stock, or any leading GC feminist. Because I would bet my house she doesn’t have the first clue why she thinks what she thinks or any logical or evidence-based defence of her viewpoint. It’s just fake accusations of “waaaaa, you hate the poor marginalised trans people” instead of listening to the arguments. Many of which are agreed on by a number of trans people.

yourhairiswinterfire · 23/01/2024 18:41

'Uncritical airtime to GC's'. 'Balance'.

Jo was on to talk about her experience and the judgment. She suffered direct discrimination, harassment, constructive unfair dismissal, wrongful dismissal, post employment victimisation and post employment harassment.

And Zoe is sulking that no one was invited on to criticise Jo?! Is she for real?

What does she want, Jolyon Kimono on to pretend that Jo lost? The people who made her life a misery invited on, for 'balance', to explain how bullying, harassment, discrimination, wrongful dismissal and post employment victimisation is a good thing?

MrsTwatInAHat · 23/01/2024 18:15

As for Monty. Also ought to listen to WH to hear the gobsmacking extent to which it has literally been about TW for years. They made Caitlin Jenner their top woman of the year at one point!

TrainedByCatsToBeScathing · 23/01/2024 18:14

MotherofPearl · 12/01/2024 18:22

I think ZW's problem is that she always desperately wants to be seen as right-on, and she thinks embracing the TRA agenda is one way to 'look cool'.

Actually I know a few people like this, whose desperation to always appear cool and right-on completely blinds them to what's actually at stake with this issue. They'll cheerfully throw women under the bus in their pursuit of looking 'progressive'. 🙄

I think you’re probably right and part of her desperation to appear cool is to try and cover up her privilege. There’s not a chance a working class journalist would getaway with being so mediocre

MrsTwatInAHat · 23/01/2024 18:13

In which Zoe demonstrated not just the expected cringing servitude, but that she knows fine well TWAM (by not including them in the original Ally Hour suggestion).
