Lib Dem's wondering where their members went

I just got this email from the membership officer of our local Lib Dem party.

I’ve been looking at our membership data for the last 4 year, and I’ve noticed a steady decline in our membership, and I understand that you were all once members during that time, but have since lapsed, or resigned.

You will all have different, perfectly good reasons for lapsing your memberships, but I’ve been asked by the Exec committee to understand what the main reasons are.

Hmm...what could it be causing people to leave? It's a head scratcher for sure.

Ha ha, brilliant.

Yup, I think that wins the thread!

I voted for them after Blair decided to invade Iraq, but their boot-licking ways and student fees rubbish made me decide that they could piss off. I definitely wouldn't vote for them now.

Lib Dem for women have a good webinar series. I think they should put these women in charge.

Ed Davey was last a minister 9 years ago.
HE is not to blame for the way the Post Office has conducted itself since then.

Horizon started in 1998
Ed Davey was not a minister for the first 12 years of the debacle

The mud flingers are having fun but this is NOT an Ed Davey problem

Well that's alright then.

According to the Telegraph:

Davey was later hired as a political consultant by top law firm Herbert Smith Freehills, which was acting for – guess who? – the Post Office! He was paid £833 per hour, amassing a grand total of £225,00.

Oh do fuck off. He was minister at the crucial time when anyone with half a brain could have stopped this. This fell under his remit and he was responsible. He asked no difficult questions and lapped up the assurances given. The Post Office were green lighted to carry on their persecutions. Not unsurprising as anyone who parrots TWAW has no critical thinking skills. He was followed in the role by Jo Swinson another intellectual pigmy who also did nothing.

AvacadoFieldsForever · 10/01/2024 20:23

Good point about Tim Farron. I wonder looking back if there was more to it. Purge anyone who might not roll over or who has morals and ethics so then you can spread whatever weird nonsense you want.

Yes, and Aimee Challoner. And now Ed Davy has fucked up with the post office debacle. They are strange people.

When a political party shows you who they are believe them and all that.
(Not forgetting the current government who appear to be heading for a world record of sexually abusive MPs).

Jo Swinson : Pansexual = desperate

The Libdems had a chance after 2015 to lick their wounds and come back stronger.
Instead they took gender drug money and disappeared up their own fundament.

The Green Party used to be about climate change and living a sustainable life
now they obsess about drugging children and borrowing Aimee Challenor from the Libdems

The Tories are a broad church - they take anybody who pays (from Kemi B to Caroline N)

Labour were critically injured by the Corbynites driving moderates out of local parties under the watchful eye of Lily Madigan

I think you'll find Ms Pansexual was Layla Moran, not Jo Swinson.

Jo Swinson is a humanist with a peanut allergy – not the same thing.

The Liberals were the party of Cyril Smith, Clement Freud and Jeremy Thorpe. Could anyone ever have any doubt that they prioritised the satisfying of powerful males' sexual desires over the rights of women, children, and lower status men? A nasty bunch, always were, no reason to expect a successor party to be any different.

Yes if you read A Very English Scandal by John Preston it's all there. Liberal in many senses of the word.

But then I've never been libdem. Always promising paradise with them and then, when they did get a sniff of power, all their high ideals went "pfft".

You can promise the earth to voters if you know you won’t get elected.

Then, saying they actively don’t want you to support them if you’re not TWAW shows that they are, as you thought, absolute clowns.

JanesLittleGirl · 10/01/2024 19:07

2010 was my second GE where I had the vote. I voted LD because of their position on student fees. I learnt my lesson then.

Paedophile party, them and the greens. A safeguarding nightmare. David and Aimee Challenor.

Paedophile David Challenor raped a ten year old girl, in Coventry, AC Used him as an election agent for the greens, then Aimee was taken in by the liberals who let AC have too much to do with young liberals when AC is a safeguarding back hole.

No way on earth am I voting for either of those parties again in a very long time and not until something's has changed drastically in either party.

Yeah this. I have never been a member, but I used to vote tactically for them as in a Tory-LD marginal. Never again.

Technically I believe it falls under legitimate purposes about membership. But they shouldn't be continuing past a certain point to hold onto your data. They should only keep your details for a short period after leaving.

It depends on the reasons they gave for collecting and processing the data when members provided it. If they said they would only use if for membership purposes, then they should not be using it to contact ex-members (though they are allowed to retain the data for a reasonable period and indeed may be required to do so, e.g. for tax purposes re membership fees). But I suspect you will find that they gave themselves more leeway, and that their Fair Processing/Privacy notice allows them to use the data to contact former members too.

Leadership of most political parties underestimate the enormous contribution that women make as members, leaders (especially locally), volunteers and canvassers.

Why they think it's good policy to piss off 50% (or more) of their support only reveals how little they represent us and how incredibly oblivious their national leadership is.

Ex Alliance Party member in NI here waves I could have written this. My sentiments exactly. Alliance, who are loosely related to the Lib Dems, have lost my trust as they have been so extreme, irrational and dishonest on this issue. They were the only party I could vote for in NI (it's a low bar, tbf). Now I am politically homeless. I wouldn't trust them to open a paper bag.

Winnading · 10/01/2024 14:55

The fact that they haven't got this issue on their radar as to why women have left speaks volumes

they know. Unless they've been living under a rock the last 5 years at least. They have been emailed by many many people over the years, so has labour for that matter.
There are some amazing women still in both parties, trying to be heard. I cant fault them for trying. It's getting them nowhere, but good on them for trying at all.

They dont want to hear. For whatever reasons, they dont care about women. Think we are lying, over egging it, should be kind and budge up, think men are the most important people, all men of any gender identity.
They and labour can shove it. So too conservative but they have at least started some moves away from identity politics.

Its interesting to see their stance hasn't boosted their membership.

Isn’t it just

I don’t understand anyone who’d vote for a party that has loudly declared they don’t want your vote. Aside from the stupidity of that as a strategy you’re just debasing yourself

Farron is evangelical, I think. Not Catholic.
