Hope this is the right place. Like many others I've learned a lot from these boards and receiving an email with this language today from ModiBodi (in celebration of the scrapping of VAT on period products) made me so angry. I'm not brave enough to put myself as GC on my socials but did fire off my thoughts in a contact form to the brand directly. Just pointing out that removing "women" from language is degrading and to be truly inclusive, we as women should be included. language IS important. Might not help but wanted my voice to be heard

It is so bra burning time. Fuck them and everyone else too blind to see that we are erasing women.

FFS. It's like a competition to come up with the most batshit term to avoid saying women and girls.

This^

The purpose of this language is not, as Maddy claims, to 'include' females who identify as trans, but to obscure the connection between women and female biology - with the aim of making it easier for men to insert themselves into the category 'woman'. That's why you don't see the same thing happening to male language.

Exactly this.

It's ALL about men, always.

If there are no set definitions/boundaries/rules/descriptors of what it is to be a woman or female, then it becomes more easy for anyone to identify into the category.
AND for anyone thinking ModiBodi or whatever the fuck they are called, are just being "kind" to transmen who have identified out of their womanhood, they're not.
They carry a product marketed at trans WOMEN. Yes, a period product marketed at biological males, to ease their gender dysphoria or some fucking nonsense.

A few years ago a man wanting to experience periods and going so far as to purchase sanitary wear, would have rightly been named as the thing that he so clearly is.
Now it is celebrated and encouraged.
This whole thing is about welcoming men into the category of female by erasing what it means to be a female.
Nothing else.

lesdeluges · 28/11/2023 18:38

"People who use sanitary protection for their periods". Is that PC enough?

VoodooQualities · 28/11/2023 18:20

'Women, girls and anyone else who has periods, no matter how you identify'

There. It's easy.

theilltemperedclavecinist · 28/11/2023 18:04

Good news for camping fans! - 10% off tents!

How very dare you? What about homeless people who need a tent but aren't camping fans? Or open air camping fans who don't need a tent?

Good news for people who want to buy a tent! 10% off tents!

Better.

(Why have advertisers lost the art of the metonym?)

WickedSerious · 28/11/2023 18:00

I'm sure it all makes sense until you realise that it's not possible for a female to transition to male.

Period-experiencing human has actually really made me laugh. It's hilarious. So banal and daft.

Last week I was a period-experiencing human.
This week, I'm not
Next week, I won't be.
The following week I won't be either.

I'm still a woman all month long.

I'm still a woman and I haven't had a period in 30 years. No big deal.

Thinking about it I didn't have periods for the first 12 years of my life either. That adds up to the majority of my life I was not a period having human.

agent765 · 28/11/2023 17:42

The companies selling period pants for "uterus-havers", "cervix-havers" or period-experiencing humans" are also alienating a LOT of women.

I have a friend who bought them for bladder leaks after a hysterectomy at the age of 46. She was still a "period-experiencing human" until then.

Another friend is post-menopausal and has bought them for light bladder leaks. She's no longer a "period-experiencing human" but still uses them.

Humans who buy and use period pants for periods or leaks are women! And they're keeping your companies in business.

All I can say is be careful what you wish for, ModiBodi (and the rest), or you may end up selling only to the VERY FEW WOMEN who don't wish to be known as WOMEN despite knowing that they ARE WOMEN.

TheABC · 28/11/2023 17:34

Spare a thought for anyone from the USA where a period is punctuation. By that definition, Modinodi is correct but unlikely to sell many of its pants.

How ? Are women not period experiencing people?

If you read the thread you've got multiple, extensive explanations of how this is exclusionary and specifically to women and girls.

Is it that you haven't read the thread yet, or would you like clearer information to help you understand the issues?

Yes this is male driven

Males who want women to hand over the word for their use

Exactly so. We all know that not all women experience all female experiences, certainly not all at the same time anyway, but most of us do at some time or other, and all of us get treated differently because we are perceived as women or girls, i.e. humans with female bodies rather than male. But when we are described as chestfeeders, period-experiencing humans, vagina owners, birthing bodies and so on, not only is it dehumanising to refer to us by these bodily processes rather than by a word that recognises us as sentient beings, but also it becomes harder to talk about issues that affect our entire sex class and only our sex class, because each issue that affects us is discussed separately and the unifying theme is lost. As has frequently been pointed out, if we can't see or talk about sex, how can we recognise or discuss sexism?

Helleofabore · 28/11/2023 16:39

We hear so often that there is a group of female people who are triggered by their periods and discussion of periods. So, when is this all going to stop and revert to additive language if forced, or just revision back to women and girls.

Because the group who tell us they are triggered by being reminded that they have periods are also triggered by the words 'women and girls'. If they cannot be included with additive 'transmen and non-binary female people', then none of these linguistic accommodations are going to work for them.

Therefore, this language is alienating everyone. I do think it is becoming very clear that making these ridiculous phrases is not working for clear communication. I also think that those who are staunchly defending this language usage are also being shown to not have the empathy for others that they often premise their defence on and are simply blindly adhering to ideologically driven emotions.

BreatheAndFocus · 28/11/2023 16:31

“Period experiencing humans” is dreadfully unexclusive. What about the poor Furries and the Otherkin? Do they not count?

Seriously, it’s ridiculous and making the words “women” and “girls” seem dirty. Transmen aren’t over.y fond of their periods. They’re hardly going to complain that they’re not included by “women and girls”. In fact, twisting language to include them, only draws attention to something they’d probably rather forget.

LeggyLegsEleven · 28/11/2023 16:28

So are condoms for ‘ejaculating experiencing adults’ ?

it’s always women.

JellySaurus · 28/11/2023 16:25

My sons and my dh are period-experiencing people. I, a post-menopause woman, am a period-experiencing person. Even though none of us menstruate. When my dds menstruate, the rest of the household experiences their periods. We know when they have PMS. We bring them hot water bottles and codeine when they need them. We make no comment when bloody knickers are soaking in a bucket next to the washing machine.

Yet the majority of 'period experiencing people' in the JellyHouse have absolutely no use for period pants and are not the target audience for Modibodi.

Maddy70 · 28/11/2023 15:14

How ? Are women not period experiencing people?

If failing to mention transpeople or call them what they want to be called is 'exclusionary', then how is it not exclusionary to constantly avoid mentioning women and girls?!

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 28/11/2023 15:43

Period-experiencing humans is a fucking ridiculous, clumsy term. If they want to include transmen, why not actually name them?! Women, girls and transmen would be fine and doesn't exclude or erase anyone. It's also shorter than their stupid term, in case anyone was going to suggest that naming 3 categories of people was a bit of a mouthful!

Maddy70 · 28/11/2023 15:14

How ? Are women not period experiencing people?

Er, not necessarily. I’m at prime childbearing age and probably won’t have another period even if I gain loads of weight. If I went to live in Sweden - I speak Swedish but not fluently - I’d understand immediately if I was told something was for a “kvinna” (woman) and still be able to work out that it wouldn’t be much help to me. I’d not have a clue what they were on about if they wrote about period experiencing people.

Dillydollydingdong · 28/11/2023 15:42

Hmmm... I can!

Terfosaurus · 28/11/2023 15:35

My periods are definitely an experience!

And my ModiBodi period pants are so good. I'm scared to spend money on other brands in case i hate them
But don't want to give money to companies supporting this shit.

Spudlover · 28/11/2023 15:33

Maddy70 · 28/11/2023 15:14

How ? Are women not period experiencing people?

You’re grasping at straws. You know it’s not inclusive.

All transmen or non binary females understand they have periods, and if they don’t, perhaps their transition is not informed consent. The ones who may not realise are those with learning difficulties or for whom English is a second language, the ones who are actually excluded.

This doesn’t happen to men, they get to be men so no-one truly cares about inclusivity. It’s only women who are broken down into spare parts and bodily functions. Only males can be women, it’s about decoupling womanhood from the physical processes men can’t experience.
