Does the UN realise women are human?

Britain could be blacklisted at the UN’s human rights body over its defence of biological sex, The Telegraph can reveal.
The Equalities and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is facing a “special review” of its international accreditation after lobbying by trans rights groups led by Stonewall, the controversial LGBT charity.
The review could leave the EHRC stripped of its so-called “A status”, which means it would no longer have a place at the table of the UN Human Rights Council and other UN bodies.

Apparently the UN think Britain must be denied a voice on Human Rights - because we insist on standing up for women’s rights!

After hearing the Stonewall statement on Woman’s Hour I think the TRAs might be approaching the ‘burn it all down’ stage. They’d rather trash the UK’s whole human rights infrastructure than cede any ground and recognise that other people matter too. Reckless in the extreme.

The BBC have covered it, sounding rather gleeful at the prospect of the UK's human-rights watchdog [being] at risk of UN downgrade.

As for the UN, the Special Rapporteur on VAWG, Reem Alsalem knows what women & girls are & that it’s sex not gender that matters. She of course had to defend herself from ludicrous allegations after she pointed out massive obvious issues with ScotGov’s plans to force through self-ID come hell, high water, or a functioning ferry service. Generally though? UNWomen is an unfortunate Twitter/X handle; but it’s pretty accurate.

I’m struggling to continue paying the BBC and I appreciate a fair bit of radio, but the anti women stance is too much

I said a while back the biggest issue we face is due to the markers and graders

Ie the international organisations that put us in a table or by grade. It’s not for women atm it’s for men.

They may need to be recreated

This is the same UN that took 6 weeks to even acknowledge that Jewish women were raped on Oct 7th, and put Iran at the head of its human rights division. I think everyone knows the UN is a bloody joke now.

And the same UN which awarded COP28 to UAE - who have been merrily using the opportunity to persuade countries that (with the help of the UAE obvs) they can both mine their fossil fuel reserves, and support climate change (which I guess is kind of true)

Sex matters have done a timeline of all the events and attacks. I have huge respect for Kishwer Falkner.

From a tread by Dennis Kavanagh. He's on fire.

9/ What we don't expect though, and have every right not to expect, is the charity sector where not one person is elected, to go about undermining ministers, public bodies and the influence of this nation on the global stage. Stonewall have gone too far here.

10/ They regard themselves as self-appointed custodians of human rights and equality policy and seem to view the EHRC as an inconvenient adversary to be crushed and if damaging the interests of this country is what it takes, so be it. This is seriously unusual.

11/ Charities concerned with the alleviation of poverty do not grass up the chancellor to UN bodies. Charities concerned with animals don't actively undermine DEFRA. Criminal justice charities don't try to delegitimise the Lord Chancellor. SW are out of whack here and over mighty

12/ It is now high time the Charity Commission acted and that the government looked closely at this sector. We elect governments accountable to us at general elections. No one elected Stonewall and no one elected them to harm this country's influence. Enough is enough.

They're a lobby group. They've always been a lobby group. They even used to call themselves 'The Stonewall Lobby Group'.

Yes I thought lobby group

Incredibly powerful especially since schools use them. If you can indoctrinate children you’re pretty much there.

The more Stonewall do this, the harder it is for them to say they are a charity not a political party.

A typical click bait article from the Telegraph.

The UN is saying biological sex, not women's right. This is a human rights issue. Remember around half of trans people are transmen. You probably work with them, and will never know.

It's about the treatment of trans people in a society, of which it is clear from these international bodies that the UK is running out of step with advancing all human rights.

The EHRC is a disgrace. It's clearly politically stacked and has low respect from sectors of the community it is meant to also represent. Why they have that is something for self reflection by the agency - though reality is they are a political branch, and the UN bodies can see through that and call it out.

No-one is taking away our women's rights in the UK. They are enshrined in the equalities act and all the exemptions are there as appropriate for separate sex facilities. It's up to each organisation how they implement it where appropriate for a legitimate purpose.

Most of the rest is political positioning and fear mongering - and the few bad eggs you get in any part of society. I guess it gives some people a hobby to get angry about.

"The UN is saying biological sex not women's right"

What does this mean? Surely that sentence is missing something?

The UN is saying biological sex not women's right is / is not important for [what purpose?]

The UN is saying biological sex not women's right / does / does not matter in [what sphere]?

That’s from March 2022. As I recall, the lobbyists were told to bog off, and the EHRC retained its A status.

No, it seems to be a repeat attempt. But it really looks similar to the last time. It might even be the third attempt?!

'A senior judge in the Scottish court of session has ruled that "sex" in the Equality Act means "legal sex" not biological sex'

This was a very complicated case - as far as I can make out, the effective outcome was that Haldane said that it was up to Westminster to clarify if 'sex' meant 'biological sex' in the EA.

Which is exactly what the EHRC is also saying.

Government needs to clarify that 'sex' = 'biological sex' and that 'single sex' means 'single biological sex'.

I thought this could mean it is in progress. From the petition response. I see this as our only way out of this. Labour would squash it

‘On 21 February 2023, the Minister for Women and Equalities (MfWE) sought advice from the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) on the benefits or otherwise of an amendment to the Equality Act 2010 on the current definition of 'sex', as she was concerned that the Equality Act may not be sufficiently clear in the balance it strikes between the interests of people with different protected characteristics, particularly in the case of the protected characteristics of ‘sex’ and ‘gender reassignment’.

Having received that advice, the Minister for Women and Equalities has asked officials to undertake detailed policy and legal analysis, as per the EHRC’s request, to understand the impact of its advice on various protected groups and related issues’

transmen are more disadvantaged than transwomen

Good point. And why is that?

Baroness Falkner on now. Describing Stonewall as antangonistic which is avery generous interpretation imho. Doing a pretty good job describing their advice to the government.

Also saying how transmen are more disadvantaged than transwomen.

Also that people need to read their letter and that has been considered in great detail.

Bit worrying that she is saying their rights could be covered by the Gender Recognition Act.

Stonewall statement more bollocks about the poor transpeople.

The GRA underpins all this. I can’t believe it was put in and has created this huge mess and no one can clean it up.

Did anyone ask if we wanted society reorganised from sex to gender, and with it all the disadvantages that brings to women and damage to children

Most of the rest is political positioning and fear mongering - and the few bad eggs you get in any part of society. I guess it gives some people a hobby to get angry about.

In the UK, which is the country being criticised, trans people are already treated considerably better than everyone else.

No other group is allowed to use single sex spaces for the opposite sex just because they bloody well feel like it. No other group has been allowed to compete in women's sports even though they are male. No other group is allowed to have their own rape crisis groups just for them and their own unique needs, at the same time as STOPPING other groups from having their own rape crisis groups to meet their own unique needs. No other group is allowed to be housed in women's prisons despite being male and in some cases having been convicted of causing serious harm to women and girls.

Women's rights may technically be "enshrined in the Equality Act" but in practice they are not being upheld. Businesses are declining to use the exemptions in the Equality Act to provide single sex spaces for women and girls, either because they are ideologically captured themselves or they simply fear the reaction from the TQ+ lobby if they do so. A senior judge in the Scottish court of session has ruled that "sex" in the Equality Act means "legal sex" not biological sex, despite the fact that gender reassignment is already its own protected characteristic.

No other group is constantly celebrated and prioritised the way this one is. No other group has an entire month of the year dedicated to saying how wonderful they are, with much of the public and private sector turning itself rainbow coloured in support and holding events to raise awareness of this group that we are all extremely fucking aware of already. No other group has its own remembrance day to celebrate those among its number who have been tragically murdered when the number of people in this group being murdered is less than one per year on average in the UK and has been since records began. No other group has so many charities dedicated to promoting their interests, often at the expense of other groups. No other group has so much corporate power behind them.

And this is not simply true in the UK but across the entire western world. In the UK we are seeing a small amount of pushback from people who say, "Hey, actually, I don't have a gender identity but I do think biological sex is important" and the reaction is that such views are intolerable and must be crushed.

These international human rights organisations need to remove their heads from their sphincters, stop criticising certain UK based feminists and human rights groups for stating the fucking obvious, and pay more attention to REAL human rights abuses, particularly in the developing world where girls are still being denied an education, confined to menstrual huts, subjected to FGM and sold as child brides.

I'm not convinced that this is an old story. I think it is history repeating itself. The Telegraph published this yesterday web.archive.org/web/20231128043008/www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2023/11/27/britain-faces-un-blacklist-over-trans-rights-lobby-ehrc/

Maya Forstater posted a really interesting thread on X yesterday about an organisation who conducted an independent review of the EHRC's leadership. It details how Faulkner has worked very hard to bring about change to make sure the commission functioned as an independent regulator as opposed to a lobbying group. It detailed the internal struggles to bring about this change.

At the end of the thread, Katy Montgomery replied with something along the like of 'They are no longer fighting for human rights'. For once, I didn't disagree with KM outright, but I disagree with what I think was her sentiment.

Having read the extracts of the review (the ones Maya posted), I thought that maybe lots of people are confused about the EHRCs function. I imagine any UN review of it would need to start from there. It's no good complaining that the EHRC isn't promoting trans rights, or any other group's rights, if it's role isn't an advocacy one!

That article makes it clear that Stonewall thinks there is a conflict between women's rights and so-called "trans rights".

in May this year Stonewall again led a complaint to Ganhri saying that the EHRC’s suggested protections for biological sex were “actively harming trans people”.

In a letter copied to UN human rights bosses, the organisations accused the EHRC of a lack of political independence and of issuing guidance on single-sex spaces which “sought to enable greater exclusion of trans women” from women-only spaces such as bathrooms and toilets.

It said that the suggestion that sex should be defined in law as biological sex was “unfair”.

For so long Stonewall have been insisting that there is no conflict between women's rights and "trans rights". They have insisted that giving them all the "rights" they demand doesn't affect anyone else. Their admission that this was a lie and that there is a conflict is at least progress of sorts. Now we just have to ensure that the rights of women are seen as just as important as the rights of the most vocal group whose main aim at the moment seems to be to undermine the EHRC.

Baroness Falkner seems determined to make sure that there is fairness to all parties and not mindlessly succumb to the demands of the trans lobby:

“At the EHRC, we keep our eyes on our public duty first, which is to protect and promote the rights of everyone – not merely those that shout the loudest.”

HipTightOnions · 28/11/2023 10:14

Kishwer Falkner will be talking about this on Woman's Hour today.

It's about the treatment of trans people in a society, of which it is clear from these international bodies that the UK is running out of step with advancing all human rights.

Advancing for who? Women are losing access to rights and services they had won through making their case and which enable their full participation in society.

To be fair, the "advancement of all human rights" is logically consistent, if you don't consider female Homo sapiens to be human, but rather a form of partially-sentient service biped.
