'The Quebec Boxing Federation was reportedly aware of Walmsley’s biological sex, but justified the fight by stating they had chosen an appropriate referee for the match. Ultimately, Bissonnette says her decision to withdraw came down to safety.'

'Following Bissonnette’s withdrawal, Walmsley issued a statement to the press accusing her of “outing” him and warning that similar actions would have a negative impact on female athletes.'

CANADA: Female Boxer Withdraws From Competition After Being Matched Against Male Fighter - Reduxx

I think this is the only way that women stop this shit of men being permitted to compete against them. Each time it happens, in whichever sport the women refuse to compete. You can't run a competition where women are pitted against men if the women refuse to compete. So whether it's swimming or boxing, darts or rugby, running or cycling, if the women contestants refuse to compete against biological males, whatever the 'gender' of their magical thinking, there will have to be a rethink.

MintTrackies · 17/11/2023 10:06

I have taken up a combat sport. I’m a big, strong, heavy woman. Even the small guys in the classes could eviscerate me.

This is an area where there should be absolutely no debate. Men cannot be allowed to punch women.

RandomNutter · 17/11/2023 10:03

Men find it much easier to cut weight before fights. They have more muscle which they can dehydrate for weigh ins, then rehydrate after. So a much heavier man can fight at a lower weight.
The more you know, the fairer it seems.

ErrolTheDragon · 17/11/2023 09:59

Yes, it's maleness, and the strategy to address male advantage in sports is simple and long established - separate categories for each sex. 'Gender'

Interesting that in one of the articles above he actually says "Equality..... requires men to recognise how their masculinity offers them relative advantages, and think of strategies to address that." and then allegedly fails to see that choosing to fight against biological women is a way of giving himself a "relative advantage". You couldn't make this stuff up.

He seems rather confused. His maleness gives him far more advantage than any putative advantage of masculinity.

How does it even work with the weight categories? I'd have thought that most men would be significantly heavier than a woman, even of an apparently similar size - and so not a fair match, even leaving aside the stinking obvious.

Presumably the weight has to be right, but that doesn't account for proportions of muscle, bone and fat. Or the types of muscle.

I'm still baffled by the idea that she 'outed' him.

Was everyone supposed to think he was some sort of strapping lass prior to his opponent declining the opportunity to be beaten to a pulp?

I believe that's the way that argument usually works, yes.

Maaate · 16/11/2023 20:06

Just to add to some earlier posts, I box and the gym I go to has a teenagers class that I sometimes join in with when there's an odd number. Newby 14 year old boys with arms like pipe cleaners have enough power to really hurt when punching and could easily knock me out if they landed one properly

ArcaneWireless · 16/11/2023 19:39

I wonder how many men - who insist that they should be able to fight women - would still want to if they had to fight the world top ten boxers in their height/weight category first. You know, because of course someone would have matched that fairly.

Do you think that they would blindly trust the men to be fair and take into consideration that they were boxing someone way below their capabilities?

Book me for ringside seats.

Why don't these men campaign for a transwoman category instead of trying to force their way into women's sports, endangering women and taking wins from them? I don't see that anyone would have a problem with a separate category all of their own.

Because that would force them to admit what we all know - which is they are not women. Males invading spaces that they don’t own - plus ca change.

"Female boxer withdraws from fight with MAN".

Well, of course she would.

Yes, indeed. But if said man has declared he has some different kind of inner gender essence in the past couple of years, she is obliged to allow herself to be punched by him.

GoatsareGOAT · 16/11/2023 00:05

Surely the only #right referee would be the one that refused the match on safety grounds!

MrsGhastlyCrumb · 15/11/2023 23:53

Brilliant. Well, not brilliant as she should never have been out in that position. The consequences of fighting a male could be extremely serious though- career ending or worse. I hope Canada wakes up to this soon.

caringcarer · 15/11/2023 23:44

Good for her. No reason at all why a woman would want to fight a biological male.

JanesLittleGirl · 15/11/2023 23:09

OK. Yeah, of course I will fight you. And we agree that there should be reasonable adjustments. My reasonable adjustment is a Kalashnikov. Do you still want to play!

I can actually kill you with an assault weapon and you can actually kill me with your superior strength.

Gotta be fair innit?

And the length of everyone's arms, which is a massive deal in boxing.

And the size of the hands.

miri1985 · 15/11/2023 22:59

I don't get how having an "appropriate" referee would help I mean people have been seriously injured even with professional referees supervising bouts.

Would professional boxing sanction a match between Amir Khan and Tyson Fury if Tyson told Amir he could trust him and they got an "appropriate" referee?

Walmsley doesn't want the sunlight on this because its wrong and now its been highlighted, hopefully more women will be able to make an informed decision and the boxing federation will have to stand by their choice to put women in increased danger.

It makes me really proud that women are standing up by stepping away, it sucks that they have to refuse to compete in sports they love but they're highlighting the unfairness of this whole situation.

"Let me beat you to a pulp, but I only fight people who are smaller and weaker than me and I insist that you must #bekind while I do it."
🤢
The deep-rooted misogyny of the fighting sports just keeps coming out over and over again (especially boxing) as they keep deferring on this issue and not taking a hard line. It really does nothing to challenge the stereotype about male boxers having a bad reputation when it comes to women.

I was very lucky to have a husband and wife team training me and the man was a proper gentleman. Very hard on us with training, very aware that we were looking at using it in a different way to the men in the group. He wanted 'my girls' to be able to handle self-defence and taught us things that weren't in the manual. He expected the men to be respectful to us, him and the space at all times. Woe betide the new bloke who came in with any swagger. And this being a shitty bit of South London, there were a few.

I think boxing is going downhill and UFC is worse. Head injuries are not good for behaviour and there is a chicken and egg aspect to some heavyweight boxer's violence towards women which needs looked at.
