"We have to re-brand as something that men can have to be taken seriously by the MALE system of medicine..."

ILikeDungs · 15/11/2023 18:25

EB to Steph: "...do you not see by even in your first interview on Women's Hour raising this about men and about those who don't call themselves women that you are already becoming a figure who is a transactivist at the head of a women's charity..."

Spot on Emma

Fififafa · 15/11/2023 18:19

Apart from the fact the Steph is male, he is also a really crap spokesperson, so why was he actually hired? Well done Emma 👏

Emma: 'Do you think someone who isn't trans can run a trans charity?'
Steph: 'Well, yes, look at Nancy Kelley at Stonewall!'
Emma: 'Stonewall isn't just a trans charity.'
Steph: 'Um...'

The whole interview is cray-cray. Emma points out that Steph has made Steph's first interview on Woman's Hour all about the handful of men who have endo and the folx who don't identify as women. Then Jodie, the endo specialist, says, in a voice of almost hysterical exasperation, 'We need to move away from the gynaecological side of things...'

Please please someone transcribe it.

Yes the mask slipped there, didn’t it. Not just Steph calling Stonewall a Trans charity but Jodie saying endometriosis is too gynae focused. I mean we can’t leave out the the menz now can we?

Anyone else notice how they were quite comfortable using the word 'men'? Women have to be 'assigned female at birth', but 'men' is a perfectly acceptable term for them to use.

Yes this! All in a context where they should have gone "AMAB" if they were truly "inclusive." (Also, didn't I read somewhere those exceedingly rare cases of endo in males are often tied to female hormones? So screwing over both TW and TM...)

Lottapianos · 15/11/2023 18:01

'It also sounds to me like he gives Nancy "Keeleigh" as the ex head of Stonewall in an example'

Yep, he does 🙄

Francesgumm · 15/11/2023 17:54

Just listened on BBC Sounds - oh yes very enjoyable - good questioning there from Emma 😁

lechiffre55 · 15/11/2023 17:52

It also sounds to me like he gives Nancy "Keeleigh" as the ex head of Stonewall in an example. He can't even get her name right.

lechiffre55 · 15/11/2023 17:43

EB doesn't half shred them to bits with such a calm and reasonable manner but with very probing questions.
As others have already said the whole Emma: 'Do you think someone who isn't trans can run a trans charity?' section is particularly eye rollworthy.
When EB pushed them on the use of the word woman was another example of the two interviewees floundering well out of their depth.
"You do not have to have a womb to have endometriosis" - Jodi Hughes
It just gets worse and worse the longer you listen.

DisingenuousBatshittery · 15/11/2023 16:48

Is that 29 men, in the whole world, ever, with a recorded diagnosis of endo?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 15/11/2023 16:46

Emma: 'Do you think someone who isn't trans can run a trans charity?'

Hahahaha seriously? Grin

The very definition of saying the quiet stuff out loud. This is gold, I'm going to listen on catch up.

PatatiPatatras · 15/11/2023 16:14

I guess I'm surprised he'd used the word men for the 29 males when any number of them could be trans.
They are both so careful not to say women have endometriosis but he said without faltering that 29 men have it. So easily...

It just made me wonder if the 29 was really about men.

Emma does have a point: why does endometriosis need to highlight everyone especially men to be taken seriously?

I wish Emma had asked if Steph knew how many women had it since he clearly knew how many men had it.

TotalOverhaul · 15/11/2023 16:40

UtopiaPlanitia · 15/11/2023 15:02

My takeaway from the interview:

Why is Steph so 'passionate around endometriosis' (and women’s health)? These issues don’t affect Steph who has male biology.

I’m surprised that Steph feels the profile of the charity has been raised in a positive light by this appointment to CEO 🤦‍♀️

Why do Endometriosis South not want to use the word 'women' when discussing the effect of this disease on women?

Steph was so passionate about endometriosis that they started off by rabbiting on for a long time about the prison service before belatedly remembering they were not on air to just open their mouth and expect to be listened to but to actually discuss the topic on hand.

IWilloBeACervix · 15/11/2023 16:15

Just listened on catch-up.

I was really pleased that Emma made the point that Steph’s appointment was about transactivism, not about women’s health.

If you replace Steph’s use of the word Feminist with Transactivist, then it becomes clearer. I’m going to pay attention more when these men use the word feminist, as really they are just trying to camouflage transactivism.

It's men with an endometriosis-type condition PatatiPatatras. Incredibly rare and only occurring in certain circumstances caused by particular medical conditions:

https://europepmc.org/article/med/4014886

He was trying to make the point that Emma Barnett was hoping he'd make. That given the choice he would make this about men, which is par for the course for a trans activist, thus confirming the criticism the charity have received, ie that it was unwise of them to appoint a trans activist as CEO.

Sorry, I can't remove the preview.

Lottapianos · 15/11/2023 15:41

'Emma did pretty well there I thought. The charity founder sounded like a woke idiot and the bloke was totally out of his depth.'

I agree. Very robust interview, Emma kept returning to the word 'woman' and why they seemed to have such a problem with it. Nice tone of 'WTF?' in her voice towards the end! What a pair of numpties

PatatiPatatras · 15/11/2023 15:40

29 men with endo? Is that 29 males or 29 females with special exteriors? Or some ratio of the two?

He's trying to prove a point but I'm not sure which...

Emma did a great job.

As did Steph and Jodie, but not in the way they intended.

😂
