There's something...i dunno...important about Steph that makes him unsuitable for such a role.

It's on the tip of my tongue...

Given that I mentioned a female CEO of a testicular cancer charity, I don’t actually know what you mean.

I mean, it sounds like there was no recruitment process as such, but it might sail close to the Equality Act to refuse the appointment on gender identity grounds. Especially as there are (a vanishingly small number of) cis men who suffer from endometriosis.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 15/11/2023 13:55

@LittleGlowingOblong you
obviously missed all the posts of stephs own words and pictures slagging off women who want single sex spaces & harassing women at the FILA conference

if they’re too dim to realise how stupid they would come across up against an experienced journalist with Endo then that’s their problem

Agree, @RoyalCorgi - in fact we’ve borne out the funder’s decision to recruit, as that wee charity now has a huge national profile - and possibly a flood of donations coming in from the trans community…

The trans community won't put their hands in their pockets.

What was the total of Shon Faye's crowdfunder??

Yes, but not under the list of "who, what, how" etc on the summary page, which is what the PP was talking about...

£8k gross income is buttons.

haven’t read all messages on here but I agree with @CheeseChamp . It’s a tiny local charity, run on a shoestring, and headed up by a 71 year old transwoman who said in the interview something like she just wanted to “do good in the world”, something like that.

You do get women heading up eg testicular cancer charities. There are no obvious safeguarding risks. I believe Steph has a GRC and has possibly surgically transitioned.

I think on this one the TERFS risk coming across as a bit harsh, and disproportionate too.

No you absolutely can state women

see women’s aid governing document here https://register-of-charities.charitycommission.gov.uk/-/charity-details/1054154/governing-document

as you can also state men

LiesDoNotBecomeUs · 15/11/2023 13:50

'Steph' is an exceptionally bad choice for the role due to wanting many of those the charity is to support/represent to be in hell.

A female would be a better choice for many reasons but a male could probably do the job... unless he often campaigned against women and girls who didn't share one of his beliefs.

RoyalCorgi · 15/11/2023 13:48

I feel more strongly than ever that Steph and Jodie shouldn't have been interviewed. How many other charity CEOs does Woman's Hour have on where the charity is very small, regionally based and brings in £8k a year? It's like interviewing your local NCT bumps and babies organiser rather than the national CEO. They ran the interview purely because there was a bit of a social media pushback against the appointment.

The best thing to do with people like Steph and Jodie - attention-seeking dimwits that they are - is to ignore them altogether. There are lots of brilliant, dedicated, hardworking women in the UK doing fantastic work in all sorts of areas. Interview them instead.

Cailleach1 · 15/11/2023 13:06

@Bloodeehell It is very a bit silly to classify the very early stages of embryonic development as phenotypically female. It is before the development into male or female. A female is not just anything without a penis and testes. It is an entire reproductive system. The human embryo has a tail until around 8 weeks, but I don’t think we think human embryos are actually part fish (even phenotypically) until the tail disappears.

@Cailleach1

Sorry I was being casual, of course embryos are not female and then either continue on or differentiate into male. I was referring to a paper which basically is referencing that it is X chromosome expression up until 6wks dictating development and thus phenotype. This will explain it better in layman’s terms for everyone.

All Mammals Start as Female - Fact or Myth?

Mammals don't start as females, they start as a blank slate with XX or XY genetic code, and for the first 5-6 weeks of gestation only the X gene expresses.

Here's their Financial info.
I'm sure they were hoping to boost donations from WH publicity. That went well.

Who the Charity helps. Spot the missing group. A Tunnock Teacake for the first correct answer.

For the purposes of the Charities Commission, women fall under the general public / other defined groups. As far as I know there is no "women" box any charity can tick (and no "men" or "trans" for that matter).

Have a look at e.g. women's aid / refuges / rape crisis / cancer charities and you'll see the same thing.

MotherEarthisaTerf · 15/11/2023 13:29

Is Steph getting paid for the role do we know?

Given the income of the charity is extremely small, I doubt it. The trustees are unpaid.

If Steph is getting paid for this it won't be a lot I shouldn't think. Expenses maybe.

Just when you think the debacle couldn't insult women any further, here comes Ben.

fedupandstuck · 15/11/2023 13:04

Having listened to most of the interview, I do wonder why Jodie and the trustees thought that someone who runs their own business and is also already the CEO and director of a large Community Interest Company (TransLucent) would have the time and capacity to also be the CEO of this charity.

Another thought after listening, Jodie should not claim that she has 100% support in this appointment until she has done an anonymous well thought out survey of her service users.

Shock

If Steph could get Emma Barnett's name right that would help.
Well, it wouldn't actually but at least it would demonstrate some basic courtesy.

RedToothBrush · 15/11/2023 12:44

CheeseChamp · 15/11/2023 11:20

The interview felt uncomfortable to me. This is a very small charity, set up by small people who are probably challenged in the critical thinking arena. They have been catapulted into the national spotlight when they clearly do not have the communication skills to handle that. I feel sorry for the woman who has clearly been captured by the be kind brigade (or more cynically may have spotted an opportunity for EDI funding by putting so much time and attention into that non issue for this charity's aims). I don't feel sorry for Steph, who has a background that shows she knew exactly what was about to happen, and did it anyway.

It is humiliating for all involved, I think Emma B will be seen as harsh, to be honest - it's not like this charity was ever going to set the narrative on endometriosis issues, surely. Sounds like it's a local charity, for local people. She was asking questions of a level that these people are not qualified or intelligent enough to engage with. Looks like big bully transphobes out to get nice lovely bekind minorities and put upon singlemums who are all sobrave.

Hoping it doesn't go that way and overall useful sunlight and fascinating to see the change of stance in this debate from a BBC show.

But it forms part of a trend particularly within the charity sector and trans trojan horsing.

Just because its small, doesn't mean its not an important isse. Its a charity thats representative of a wider issue of trans women jumping in and declaring women's health issues as their own. That includes Stonewall. That includes the many facebook groups on anything from breastfeeding to endo. And its definitely part of the whole NHS erasure of women and single sex provision.

It matters.

DisingenuousBatshittery · 15/11/2023 12:36

Imagine trying to mansplain endometriosis to Emma Barnett.

Helleofabore · 15/11/2023 12:34

CheeseChamp · 15/11/2023 11:31

You're right, that was kind - would be very interested in hearing more about her research. The anger was all aimed at Steph. The cringe part for me was hearing the upset in Jodie's voice near the end. She had clearly realised what a horrible, terrible mistake she had made in doing this interview.

And the grave error in judgment in hiring this absolute misogynist as a CEO and trustee and the PR face of a women's health charity? Do you think she now realises that terrible mistake?

Sure, she is upset. She needs to own that she has made that error and not blame nasty women for that error being pointed out to her.

SamW98 · 15/11/2023 12:34

nauticant · 15/11/2023 12:25

And it’s for reasons such as this that Steph and others feel validated.
If in doubt, roll out bullying, transphobia, TERF etc rather than present a well thought out discussion.

They were painfully out of their depth and the backslappers doing them no favours.
