Mind you, I fondly remember the days of hearing a male person had been appointed as a Labour women's officer, and thinking 'well it will be interesting to see how a TW represents women and I don't see why they shouldn't be able to if their interest and focus is on women'.

Oh the innocence. My lovely, happy and trusting open mindedness didn't last long past that appointment.

WhereAreWeNow · 13/11/2023 09:14

Sorry if I've missed it but does anyone know Steph's background? Other than being a man? Does he have a track record in women's health or in the charity sector? Just wondering what qualified him for the role.

Glamourreader · 13/11/2023 09:14

Tiny charity it may be but the Trustees have legal responsibilities, they can't allow anyone to spread misinformation or to divert the purpose of the charity. If this is happening it needs reporting to the Charity Commission.

@AlisonDonut no of course not. Is this man saying he has endometriosis? If so then of course that's bonkers. But if not, then I don't think being male should preclude someone from heading up an endometriosis charity if he has a background in fundraising/charity sector.

crowsfeet57 · 13/11/2023 09:02

My life was blighted for 30 years with endometriosis, which left me infertile. I think this is a disgusting decision. Why on earth do these organisations keep on pandering to men who basically want to play dress-up.

MsRosley · 13/11/2023 08:39

BlessedKali · 12/11/2023 23:10

Updated analogy thanks to previous postersl'd astute comment:

There is an organisation for people of colour. The CEO is white - not a great choice as this person has no lived experience, however maybe they are just good for the role...

BUT then imagine if that white CEO denied the existence of people of colour as any meaningful category, and if he actively campaigned for POC to lose certain rights. And his motivation for taking the role was because it sexually aroused him. Now, he is worse than 'not a great choice', and he is actually a fucking TERRIBLE CHOICE

Imagine if that CEO blacked up every day and insisted he was actually black.

Froodwithatowel · 13/11/2023 08:23

What Magdalen Burns said. ^^

What makes me smile, in a wry, oh ffs way, is that they're going to all this trouble to remove any sexed reference to this female disorder,

while employing a male who is there solely because of the benefits to said male's personal experience in it being a specifically and exclusively female, internal, gynecological thing . They will have no interest whatsoever in de femaling this condition. Oh what a lovely bucket they've found to splash about in.

Will I be donating to a charity whose priority apparently is providing lovely feels to a male by exploiting women?

No. I won't.

GrimDamnFanjo · 13/11/2023 08:22

They are looking for Trustee applications!

Rightsraptor · 13/11/2023 08:15

I delved around a bit in Endometriosis South Coast's website yesterday and I don't think I'd have donated even before the Advent of Steph.

As others here mention, it bends over backwards to be 'inclusive' while denying the existence of women, there's a blog about somebody's 'privilege' (linked to BLM stuff, if I recall correctly) and all that rubbish. I would have thought such a tiny charity would focus on its core purpose, but they've proved themselves so very easily distracted.

As a result of all this I now thoroughly investigate all charities I donate to, even very low amounts. Don't collar me outside the station or supermarket and expect me to sign up. After signing up to Great Ormond Street Hospital's fundraiser outside a shop and discovering that the hospital flies the 'progress pride' flag ... well, that was it for me.

Due diligence is what's needed. Every single time.

RedToothBrush · 13/11/2023 08:13

MarilynBoo · 12/11/2023 21:29

They are fully TWAW. Check out this blog in which they directly criticize gender critical feminists. Here's a quote:

"gender critical feminists have started a brutal campaign to strip back trans rights."
endometriosissouthcoast.com/international-womens-day-2021/

So there you have it.

The charity is actually being used as a Trojan horse not to support women with Endometriosis but to push trans rights. It's not centring women.

If the CEO was centring women and not pushing their own agenda through the charity there wouldn't be a problem with them being CEO.

It's their hijacking that's the issue. Not their identity as such.

ApocalipstickNow · 13/11/2023 08:08

flickersy it’s a general observation.

I’ve never had endometriosis but it’s quite common and I would think a local service for sufferers would be quite important to women who have it, as with any health issue.

Steph thanked Jodie and Endo South Coast for the appointment:

While back in September, Jodie was thanking Steph for shortlisting her for an award:

I'll scratch your hairy back etc.

Appoint male to important role in women’s sector.

Remove any reference to actual women.

Annoy women supporters, who stop donating/supporting.

Women’s resource folds.

Man moved on without looking back.

Women lose vital services/networks.

Have I missed anything?

Important role? Vital services?

This is an extremely small local charity which has about the same income as a part time Etsy shop. If they're providing any vital services then I'm a cat.

Also, in my experience of endometriosis charities the people involved either have the condition themselves or have been a carer for someone close to them.

This is helpful because they can interact with the women affected and truly understand not only the illness but how day to day life is impacted for them, their ability to engage in life, employment prospects, family life, social life. All of it. And you are ignored for decades, told you are being hysterical, exaggerating, that it is normal. You can barely walk at times nor eat, and in so much pain you shake. But normal. You are a woman and must get on with it.

10% of the female population are going through this crap and absolutely sweet fuck all is done about it. There is limited research and treatment. Little public awareness.

0.1% of the male population identifies as trans. They have nothing physically wrong with them. Yet the NHS is expected to pay for surgeries, therapies and the world is awash with trying to accommodate them to make their lives easier.

That is why this appointment is wholly inappropriate. Women who are ignored are now to be represented by a man presenting as a woman who clearly has more rights than they do under the patriarchal system.

Very well said. I had endometriosis. The menopause was a blessed relief when it finally came.

Women's bodies are so much more complex than men's. As my GP said when I asked for a gynae referral after failing to conceive after a year of trying, it's all so complicated frankly it's a miracle it ever works at all. And yet there's completely inadequate funding for research and treatment of many extremely common conditions that only affect women and girls.

0.1% of the male population identifies as trans. They have nothing physically wrong with them. Yet the NHS is expected to pay for surgeries, therapies and the world is awash with trying to accommodate them to make their lives easier. Amen to that.

MarilynBoo · 13/11/2023 07:36

Looks like they are a tiny charity running on around £8K a year and the CEO role may be voluntary. I've not found any advert for it. Nevertheless, if I lived in the area they covered, I'd have nothing to do with them.

Waitwhat23 · 13/11/2023 07:14

He hates Mumsnet too, unsurprisingly. All those women talking. Tsk tsk.

I always suspected they posted here and many regulars would remember the username and the misogyny and lack of cohesion in the arguments of that particular poster. So much so that there is not much to have caused much doubt in my mind that it was likely to be them.

That Steph flamed out accusing women here of being fully responsible for male violence at the protests outside of WiSpa. Apparently, women were absolutely responsible for male assaulting each other after a male person sexually abused women and girls in a naked female spa section. They were banned, but I do have my suspicions as I have never seen Richard’s act in a way that was different.

Helleofabore · 13/11/2023 07:18

Feliciacat · 12/11/2023 23:20

It is very unlikely that a man would be better than a woman with endometriosis. Where I was coming from with thinking maybe Steph was the best one for the job is that jobs often get very few applicants (despite what LinkedIn would have you believe). So maybe there were only ten applicants, five were shortlisted, two dropped out and only three were interviewed on the day. Maybe Steph performed best at interview and got the role. So it’s believable under these theorised circumstances that Steph could have legitimately got the role. So they were the ‘best’ but that doesn’t mean ‘better’.

And to be fair, the organisation would be better starting the recruitment cycle again. Maybe appointing a caretaker in a temporary role until they found someone.

This person is trying to amass influencer prestige and power by doing this. I believe they are in it for the glory and validation. They will take this charity down a path where it will may never recover reputation wise if they are so small. What regional women are going to use this charity if it is headed up by this person and they feel confused by the communications and like the charity doesn’t really understand and are just delivering nice words?

Edinburgh Rape Crisis immediately had women self excluding from its services and Beira’s place was set up in response. Steph wishes to be known to be a significant player in the trans activist world, that is the motivation here.

That’s the same Steph who organised the protests against FiLiA in Portsmouth a few years ago.

Not a sign of someone who cares about or empathises with women.

Whaaaa? Is this the person who organised a protest against a massive group of women meeting to hear about the appalling conditions for women in refugee camps? To hear about the work done for and by trafficked women? Two of the important sessions at FILIA that year.

When women in public service roles are being disciplined left, right and centre for feminist views, apparently it’s OK to appoint a man to a post that serves women, who actually hates women.

This is where we are.

The site is pretty dreadful in the information it provides. For instance, the "one in ten people" getting endometriosis is created by replacing 'women' with 'people' which, of course, should not be done without halving the number, given that half of all people are male and the rate of endometriosis among male people is so low that it won't affect the result.

So it should be "one in twenty people", but of course that reduces the level of information from "one in ten women".

And if you had to pick just one variable for predicting the group most likely to suffer from endometriosis it would be being female. But this site argues that it is not a useful variable at all!

The site has a long quasi-scientific argument that sex is not a relevant variable at all (!), given that all the different ways of defining sex don't classify every single person into either male or female sex in exactly the same way (though they are all going to classify the vast, vast majority into those two sexes the same way).

This is like saying that the concepts of light and dark during a 24-hour cycle are not useful because we may have trouble defining exactly when dawn begins or exactly when dusk begins and what exact level of light or darkness would move us form light to dark or back. That this is true does NOT mean that the concepts themselves are without value.

The site also clearly prioritises trans men and female nonbinary individuals, even though they are extremely few compared to the number of female women. And it erases the female sex from language, thus contributing to patriarchy by making it ever harder for the more oppressed sex to organise politically around the issues which matter to it, including endometriosis.

It is not a pleasant feeling to be erased.

Thingybob · 13/11/2023 06:19

I met and had a long chat to Steph in Portsmouth and the two things I took away from that meeting were that Steph is not very bright and that Steph is seriously deluded. Steph genuinely believes that they are indistinguishable from any other woman and that they physically pass. Even I didn't have the heart to tell them different.

PatatiPatatras · 13/11/2023 06:12

Bloodeehell · 13/11/2023 00:21

@MariaLuna it does appear that endometriosis is now being seen as a systemic disease with connections to autoimmune disease etc.

My issue is that they have copied and pasted a small part of a paper, without keeping women in the definition and the reference to the gynae impacts.

Everyone with endo knows you have a tonne of other health problems on top. This isn’t new. It’s the way they’ve presented the information to suit an agenda, it isn’t helpful.

Another interesting paper here
https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fimmu.2022.758440/full

Thank you for finding the paper being quoted. But I do think this charity is lying by omission. Not just amending for their own agenda.

Their explanation would have led me to believe that endo was about pain sensitivity and mood swings... the uterine like cells which are the main culprits of said pain seem to have gone awol.

I don't think you have to experience a condition in order to work for an organisation that advocates for people experiencing that condition.

I used to work for a sight loss charity. There is nothing wrong with my sight. I'd like to think I did a good job.

I know a woman who was CEO of a men's cancer charity. She was good at her job.

Just asking, did you pretend to be blind for this charity work?
