A CEO is running the business they don't have to suffer with the condition, the CEO of any charity doesn't have to suffer with from any condition to he good at their job

And this is the tripe we will get on women's hour.

As pp say no one will challenge and say "don't you have a clear conflict of interest and aren't you just using women's health as a Trojan horse for trans rights instead?".

Cos they are too gutless/useless to get to the heart of the problem directly.

It's depressing.

Indeed - the CEO of a charity tackling homelessness doesn’t need to have been homeless themselves.

However, you wouldn’t expect that CEO to suggest that they do know what it’s like to be homeless. Or to say that being homeless is just a state of mind. Or that being homeless is there own fault and they just need to start thinking like a property owner.

Needmoresleep · 15/11/2023 08:03

I don’t disagree, but there is nothing to suggest that Steph has qualifications that would make them suited to running a charity whose aim is to support women. Demonstrating outside Filia?

The good thing about WH is that on radio Steph will almost certainly come across as a man. I assume from reading Steph’s blog that Steph will use the interview as a chance to promote Steph-self rather than the charity aims.

Thinking a bit further, if the small charity positioning itself within the LGBT+ arena, does that mean they can access some of the funding streams aimed to support, particularly T people.

DreamItDoIt · 15/11/2023 07:59

The problem with these interviews is that these people are never effectively challenged. Yesterday on LBC Steph simply pointed out that there is a woman CEO of Prostate Cancer and it only affects men so the sex if a person heading up a charity doesn't matter. What isn't said is that Laura Kerry is a highly educated and experienced woman capable of leading that organisation. Laura also, working on a health related charity, isn't saying she is the opposite sex.

So the questions that should be asked are the qualifications/experience Steph has for the job, why did Steph get the job over others. Stephs precious aggression towards women's group should be highlighted. Steph should be called out on their use of 'cis'. Etc. I hope Emma challenges more effectively but I'm not holding my breath.

ArthurbellaScott · 15/11/2023 07:43

I know you are all rightly raging, but I am looking forward to Steph being on the radio discussing why he is suited to heading an endometriosis charity.

Let thems peak.

Zeugma · 15/11/2023 07:41

While I initially despaired at this person being on WH, I’m going to hold fire just for the moment in the hope that Emma Barnett will be on duty for the interview. EB is herself an endometriosis sufferer, who has written about it more than once, and I would fully expect her to be extremely well-briefed on this one.

However, I’m not sure I’ll be able to bring myself to listen. It’s all too enraging for me, as another endometriosis sufferer (who, ironically, was treated with one of the drugs that - as Permanent noted upthread - is used as a puberty-blocker, and which I would not recommend to anyone).

PatatiPatatras · 15/11/2023 07:15

People's hour 😂
The renaming is way overdue.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 15/11/2023 00:16

Steph is vile and People's Hour is fucking ridiculous. I'm sick of people openly trolling women.

LuckyCats · 15/11/2023 00:02

I’ve not read the whole thread but I trust it has been pointed out Steph is the person who organised and led the protest against Filia conference in Portsmouth October 2021.
The protest was mostly sad sacks but they did leave graffiti inviting attendees to suck dick with related cartoons on the ground directly outside the venue and where women held a vigil for murdered women and girls.
there were children mostly girls and survivors in attendance.
They made a massive racket when Julie Bindel was leading a panel discussion in one of the upstairs rooms facing the front, I wasn’t in that room as I’d gone to another talk but they were vocal, we could hear them and it was distracting.
Steph was more than welcome to buy a ticket just like everyone else and listen and maybe learn something, Steph chose to stand outside making a noise over women’s important conversations and activism, next to people who think sexual threats are ok.
Steph also thought it appropriate to distribute propaganda leaflets to women waiting in the queue to get in on the first day.
A few women around me politely declined, my friend took a couple, she was only a baby terf then, she taught me how to make origami water balloons that night.

pronounsbundlebundle · 14/11/2023 23:52

I bet being on women's hour will be very exciting for Steph.

I won't be listening.

RaininginDarling · 14/11/2023 23:45

Oh I don't know, I find the male guests on Women's Hour quite helpful for highlighting the cognitive dissonance.

Love a bit of sunlight, me.

Bloodeehell · 14/11/2023 23:39

It’s exhausting all this.

It is going to get to the point where we aren’t even going to be able to discuss how this dominance of women’s rights and spaces by a minute amount of trans people is making us feel.

Evidently transwomen‘s voices are heard louder than ours by the patriarchy because they are one of their own.

SamW98 · 14/11/2023 23:21

The new chief executive described the questions over her appointment as 'transmisogyny

Oh look we’ve got a new meaningless made up insult thrown at women who say no to men.

Bloodeehell · 14/11/2023 23:19

Furthermore, they said in that statement about how Steph being appointed to this role is fine because there are male gynaecologists….

Firstly, they are medically qualified doctors!!!

Secondly, having had internal scans and other exams from men, it’s like being treated like a cow. I would rather deal with a female in those instances too - indeed many women insist on a female gp don’t they - but sadly healthcare consultants are largely male, medicine is dominated by men in higher roles.

What are we supposed to do, not be treated at all??

Any other endometriosis charity I have come across has had women almost across the board, mostly those who have suffered. And it helps - hugely - because when you are on a helpline with these people, or trying to coordinate support, or organising to help others there is mutual understanding. Understanding of what it’s like to face hysterectomy at a young age, what the various surgeries are like to go through, how bad the affects of therapeutics are.

When you have endometriosis you are at your most vulnerable, it is a shocking disease and women need protection at this time. There don’t need to be trans rights sideshows to distract from what these women need.

I feel so sad that in a space that should be female, bar carers and medical professionals, that anyone would try and muscle in to push their own agenda.

Women have the right to appropriate care, support and safe spaces.

Bloodeehell · 14/11/2023 23:04

TinselAngel · 14/11/2023 21:53

I see on Twitter Steph has tweeted that he is going to be on Woman's Hour.

Offs

I honestly don’t want to listen to any of this anymore.

I am all for being compassionate and letting any man that feels they are a woman express that, dress how they want and be referred to how they want. Whatever.

But there has to be a line drawn somewhere.

Transwomen should not be on women’s hour, in my opinion. Because no matter how many hormones they take, or operations they have, they are still fundamentally male biologically and their underlying opinions, no matter what they do… it’s a male perspective. The neurology is different, it is a male brain, no matter if there are thought processes that person has that lead them to believe they should have been born female.

Similarly, for this endometriosis charity, they cannot possibly possibly know what it is like for women to have this disease. To have pain equivalent to childbirth, the contractions, the excessive bleeding. Because they do not have wombs or vaginas.

They can comprehend it no more than I would be able to comprehend penetrative sex, male ejaculation, prostate cancer, blue balls, phimosis any of those uniquely male conditions/experiences.

What is so inappropriate is that this circus surrounding Steph, it takes away from the support that women desperately desperately need. It detracts from the movement towards getting proper healthcare and support for women with endometriosis. There will be less funding on account of it and the condition will be taken less seriously through association with this hullabaloo.

The only person that this appointment serves is Steph.

While I agree you don't need to experience the thing a charity works for to effectively work for them I do think woman's health is a woman's issue and no man can know what it's like to live with endo. I'm a sufferer. If you work in admin I don't care if you are male but CEO? No that should be a woman who know s what suffering endo is like. It's crippling painful and affects fertility and no man can know how that impacts life like a woman can

I think it's better summed up as 'you don't need experience in a certain field to be a charity worker / CEO but your personal interests and agenda shouldn't be a massive conflict of interests with the charity's interests and agenda and your personal interests and agenda shouldn't eclipse the aims and objectives of the charity'.

It's got fuck all to do with identity.

A major shareholder in a petrol company becoming CEO of Greenpeace would be a similar conflict of interest. It would bring into question why they were involved and whether they would use the charity against the interest it's supposed to be being promoting.

PermanentTemporary · 14/11/2023 22:52

Oh that's interesting @Rightsraptor. What's especially interesting is that Lupron is one of the drugs used for endometriosis, as well as a puberty blocker. And there's a twitter thread by JH, the other award winner of that small charity... talking about the awful side-effects of Lupron and discussing whether it's worth taking as some women's experience of it is so bad.

PurpleBugz · 14/11/2023 22:48

But @BitofaStramash lots of us here have been trying to work out exactly what Steph's skills and experience are. They're not exactly obvious.

BitofaStramash · 14/11/2023 22:38

You don't need lived experience to work for or run a charity.

I've worked in charities for more than 2 decades without having lived experience of any of the causes.

I was hired for my skills and experience.

stealtheatingtunnocks · 14/11/2023 22:32

He’s on “Woo, man’s hour” tomorrow?

they e had Grace lavery yoo, but not Helen Joyce? For women Scotland? MBM?

Rightsraptor · 14/11/2023 22:05

Now stop with your moral panic you lot. Steph confirms that puberty blockers are harmless for young people.(@LondonLass91's 10.15 post refers).

And we can all rest assured that Steph knows all about it because Steph used to be a hairdresser.
