This story challenged me because as others have said, you don't need lived experience of a condition or issue in order to lead an advocacy organisation.

But, thinking back to Rachel Dolezal, the anger wasn't over the fact she was white, the anger resulted because she was pretending to have lived experience of being a black woman. If she'd just put herself forward as a white ally, she'd have been fully accepted but she was appropriating a life she could not possibly understand. I think that's the issue.

Indeed - the CEO of a charity tackling homelessness doesn’t need to have been homeless themselves.

However, you wouldn’t expect that CEO to suggest that they do know what it’s like to be homeless. Or to say that being homeless is just a state of mind. Or that being homeless is there own fault and they just need to start thinking like a property owner.

The analogy would be pretending to be homeless or having been homeless in the past whilst all the time, living in a nice comfortable house.
