John Oliver has become a terf?

I stopped watching Last Week tonight after an appalling episode about trans kids/bathroom bills a few years ago, but dh was watching this latest one about abortion and i couldn't believe my ears...it is actually about women. He says the words woman and mother repeatedly. Amazing

*I still think John Oliver is a smug, right on, right side of history dude bro and I find his deliberate lack of understanding about women's concerns repulsive.

I can't watch him anymore after one of his unfunny rants about poor 'trans kids' andtheir desperately needed affirmative healthcare. and how mean and bigoted women and girls are for not wanting to share toilets or compete in sports against men.

He's actually like this about pretty much everything.

Edit - oh darn, this is an old post - and I even commented on it before.

WhereYouLeftIt · 20/11/2024 16:35

"The “Harry Potter” author — who has come under fire in recent years for her views on trans women that many perceive as being anti-trans — is making headlines for her response to a recent segment of Oliver’s HBO talk show “Last Week Tonight.”"

I copied this from the Variety thread linked to above by @Brewdug. It's the "many perceive" that struck me. It's almost like Variety are saying 'some do, we don't'. At the very least, they are being ambiguous. This is new, pretty sure they'd have just written 'who has come under fire in recent years for her transphobic views' .

LWT takes a social/political/economic topic (random example: the historical barriers to Black home ownership) and does a deep dive. Not funny, but interesting.

So it's disappointing that Oliver is a committed genderologist, because his team could do such a great number on it. What a waste!

lcakethereforeIam · 20/11/2024 16:03

JKR is completely right about him using this as a punchline

“Finally, if you genuinely want to address the biggest concern for most girls who play high school sports, you’d be less worried about this and more about the creepy assistant volleyball coach who keeps liking their posts on fucking Instagram.”

Sexual predation, wow that's so funny 🤢

Of course the girls can block the guy on Instagram or complain to the school. What can they do if he decides he's actually a girl himself and joins them in the changing room?

Brewdug · 20/11/2024 14:31

Although everything she writes is on the money Outer, this has to be one of her best. It's utterly watertight, confident, compassionate and honest. The criticisms I've seen on X from the anti-JKR types look more imbecilic and pointless even than usual.

Be interesting to see Oliver try and wriggle out of this one. If Hollywood's industry title has run with it like this - and not in as much the usual, spiteful way that comes down completely on his side - then it isn't something he can feasibly ignore.

2024onwardsandup · 20/11/2024 14:29

Well he wouldn’t have been worried about not referring to men as well would be - because that wiuld be trans men - ie females. And no one ever worries about trans inclusive language for men —FUNNY THST

atotalshambles · 20/11/2024 14:24

JK Rowling is amazing. In a world full of disappointing high-profile individuals she makes me believe that there are some ethical human beings.

OuterSpaceCadet · 20/11/2024 14:19

Wow JKR's reply to him is so worth reading.

"Cultural elites" is the right term for the people imposing this. You can see why it became so important for trans activism to capture the arts and media so early on.

I love scrolling down the replies to JKR's threads because she's got an (immeasurably more intelligent) answer to every attempt at a put down. It's so fucking cathartic watching a woman refuse to be cowed. True gender non conformity.

andIsaid · 20/11/2024 14:07

He is such a dick head.

"Vanishingly small" - not true but if it was how many would be a good number for you John Oliver?

He has sons, so he has no skin in the game.

JK is right - the "believe the science" guys are bloody worst on this.

They are the equivalent of the climate change deniers.

BarbaraHoward · 20/11/2024 13:37

John Oliver is one of the good guys. As indeed are Seth Meyers and Jon Stewart. And Colbert.

MarieDeGournay · 20/11/2024 13:34

John Oliver has become a terf?
No more than the similar Seth Mayer, who recently complained about the Democrats 'throwing trans people under the bus' in the wake of the Harris defeat.

Their support for abortion rights for women is probably dependent on guaranteed abortion rights for transwomen🙄

Brewdug · 20/11/2024 12:56

Reviving this old thread as I knew there'd been plenty about him before. Deftly handled by JKR as always, and interesting to see the rhetoric dialled down a notch in Variety.

On X almost all the comments I saw under their post of this story were pro-JKR.

Lottapianos · 11/11/2023 17:14

'major disappointment for me. i used to like watching him.'

Same here. And I REALLY used to love Jon Stewart but he's full of the same shit. How are they going to save face when the wind has fully changed, and 'gender affirming healthcare ' is seen as the outrage that it is?

GasDrivenNun · 11/11/2023 16:41

Not concentrating properly this afternoon so I read....Jamie Oliver.....a TERF?

CliantheLang · 11/11/2023 14:15

We had local elections last week and the Democrats did very well on the issue of reproductive rights.

The fact the the Republicans sold out to the religious right and are being deliberately stupid* about abortion is their achilles heel. The Dems are going to exploit it for all it's worth while ignoring the fact that they had 50+ years to codify Roe and somehow "forgot" to do it. Because Lucy and the football

*The GOP used to be the party of women's rights and small government. The first woman in Congress, Jeannette Rankin, was a Republican.

TheresaOfAvila · 10/11/2023 08:15

His Trans Kids piece will undoubtedly come back to haunt him.
Cheerleading teenagers to get their genitalia cut off so you can feel good about yourself is always only going to have a limited shelf-life.

mirax · 09/11/2023 12:44

Noah can be funny when he is NOT doing politics. He has a good ear for other languages and cultural foibles. He did a recent stand up on the shambolic show he had in bangalore that was seriously funny and had the audience eating out of his hand. Oliver - is just your typical wet British lefty, no range and seriously unfunny.

FreddysSquishyBollock · 09/11/2023 11:48

Dear MN - neither John Oliver nor John Stewart are here so how is my
above post offensive? Please reconsider.

greenacrylicpaint · 09/11/2023 11:32

he is an annoying mansplainer...
but for some reason my teens love him.

gives us a lot to talk about though. about looking at different sources etc

prick. major disappointment for me. i used to like watching him.

AvacadoFieldsForever · 09/11/2023 02:00

When it suits the narrative of course he can use the words women and females and be a right on feminist.

In the same breath he’ll look you right in the eye and tell you there’s no difference and women can have a penis, only the far right go on about sex, people with cervix’s don’t need a collective word etc.

More woke washing.

TempestTost · 09/11/2023 00:55

Hansella567 · 08/11/2023 23:38

I think he is smug leftist prick. His comedy reminds me of a sanctimonious lecture with more clapping than laughing.

If he has changed his mind it would be a sign that the direction of the wind is changing.

Yes, this. Trevor Noah is the same. There doesn't seem to be any actual humour. Just -" look at this stupid person."

MathsIs · 09/11/2023 00:34

Thank you, @EllaMenopee
