Janice Turner's 'review' of Graham Linehan's book. Why would she do this?

From the intro to the review:

Whatever online grief I’ve had in six years reporting on the medical transition of children, or rapists in women’s jails, I know that the slightest criticism of Graham Linehan will earn me far more. Ironic really, given that the first objective of what has evolved into the gender critical movement was to defy Stonewall’s mantra “no debate”.

So Janice welcomes debate and dissent in the gender-critical camp… but she blocks Glinner? Isn’t she contradicting herself there? Blocking someone is the equivalent of sticking your fingers in your ears and saying la la la, I can’t hear you.

Sometimes Graham’s tone is abrasive, sometimes he seems obsessive and self-sabotaging, sometimes he goes too far with the Twitter rants. Through it all, though, is a man with his heart in the right place, raising awareness of extremely important issues that have been ignored by the great and the good for too long. He’s an important voice in the battle for women’s rights and I hope this review doesn’t deter anyone from reading his book and making up their own mind.

'Some people are needed to get into the mud, and Linehan and KJK have taken this upon themselves.'

Yes indeed.

I think he’s been very brave, and a stalwart defender of women and children.

But I also agree with Janice that throwing terms like Groomer around at parents of trans identifying kids (like David Tennant) is petty and nasty.

See also shouting on Twitter at Victoria Coren-Mitchell about transwomen on quiz teams on Only Connect.

He has been a great supporter to some, but actively unhelpful in other ways. I don’t think it’s disloyal or putting the boot in to think this.

Yes I agree, he can be intemperate. However, Turner's 'review' seems unnecessarily personal.

I un subscribed from his substack as it just became so relentless. Up to 4 communications a day. I was and am worried for his health. I don't want to encourage anyone to go down a road that sees them lose everything. I think he is is unhealthily obsessed. I totally get why, this stuff is maddening. If he was a friend, i would be advising him to take a step back. Sometimes, regardless of how just the cause, stepping back is the right thing to do, for you and the cause.

I agree, but this piece was less this and more "I object to a man getting more visibility here than most women, and he didn't acknowledge me, her and her, and this organisation, and this one, and that one".

And worst of all, a snobbish disdain for his getting his hands dirty tactic.

We can't all write articles for the Times like Turner or academic critiques like Dr. JC Jones.
Some people are needed to get into the mud, and Linehan and KJK have taken this upon themselves.

I wonder how Linehan will feel in a decade when this ideology has petered out, there was no post mortem, it'll be like people came out of a fog.

Plausible deniability will be the new gaslighting, there'll be no equivalent of Nuremberg trials, or even phone hacking/Grenfell/Windrush/Covid inquiries or grand jury type takedowns.

At most, Russell Brand type stories about civic society in a moment of madness that once again sacrificed women and girls.

Linehan will always remember he was on the precipice, and those he argued against will have minimal comeuppance. I can't imagine how that will feel. How we'll all feel.

Thank you for doing what you can. I have a son who also does what he can, amidst a working class culture that lauds 'boys will be boys'. It is not easy going against the grain.

I do get that @TaytoCheeseandOnion im astonished he hasn’t completely broken down with all that’s happened. I suspect the fight is what keeps him going.

TinselAngel · 14/10/2023 09:59

I've had my differences with Glinner, but wouldn't try and sabotage his chances of making a living from his book.

The criticisms from the gentry left journalists and their friends seem to centre on him being insufficiently genteel and not talking about them and their friends enough.

Why the Hell would anyone want to put a person on one of those? Looks damn uncomfortable.

It is annoying that a man gets accolades for women's work I know. But that is the world we live in. In regard to @glinner though, he has lost everything through standing up for women, and he comes across as a man who really likes us. Unlike Matt Walsh, for example, who I watch with gritted teeth.

Isn't this the Matt Walsh argument. It'll be men like him, Chris Rufo, dare I say it, President Trump/DeSantis (2024-2028) who brings it to an end? The women, feminists, are happy to engage in a never ending talking shop, but it'll be a male dominated revolution that actually sweeps GI away.

And women will be back to making the sandwiches, serving the coffee, and looking oh-so-delightful.

Maybe Turner just sees Linehan with way too much profile and interprets this as even in a female fight, it's a man who has taken precedence.

Me? Like I don't see TRA as Left wing alone, I don't view the fight against TRA as women alone. Yes, LWS and this FILIA conference need to be female only spaces (men happy to support), but GI also affects males...how are boys meant to negotiate the new gender fluidity minefield? Free speech and no platforming is sex agnostic. Men feel for women, some of us very deeply indeed.

TRA and GI is a societal wide mindfuck of the highest order, men are needed in this fight as well. I do my little bit, but Linehan and his approach are invaluable. And I agree with another poster, he seems to be the only man speaking up.

Just where are the others? Just occasional GC asides from the likes of Ralph Fiennes etc.
I had hopes that Rowan Atkinson who fiercely defends free speech and Sasha Baron Cohen who decries social media mistruths might be more vocal here, criticising TRA/GI would be consistent with their passions, but disappointingly, seen nothing from them.

RethinkingLife · 14/10/2023 09:49

Plurality of voices. Differences in approach.

There's a phenomenon known as 'premature anti-[X]' and two of the best known instances are to have been a premature anti-fascist or a premature anti-Nazi.

‘Premature anti-fascist’ was the name by which the Lincoln Brigade veterans of the Spanish Civil War were known by the US Army in World War Two. This service and knowledge didn't distinguish them for a leadership position, it was counted as demerit on their record.

In John Platts-Mills' autobiography (barrister and post-war Labour MP), he recalls being ‘excluded from any form of normal war service by the stupidities of Bevin’. He noted: ‘An anti-Nazi history, was of no help and to have been prematurely anti-Nazi was a positive hindrance … we were condemned throughout most of the 1930s on the grounds that only Communists were against the Nazis and this hostility carried over into the war years.’

Commenting on (British?) veterans of the Spanish Civil War, Platts-Mills wrote that ‘many lefties who had served in Spain were called up or were accepted when they volunteered. Several more got in only after a tussle with the authorities.’

Some of the people reviled, deplatformed from various social media, or disdained by others with whom they have a cause in common will find themselves labelled 'premature anti-authoritarians' or some other 'premature anti-[X]'. To some, KJK and Glinner are premature anti-[X], and to others they're battle-scarred and prescient.

And, given the interconnectedness of media centred in London, I doubt Glinner sees Janice Turner's review as anything approaching a surprise to him, far less 'putting the boot in'.

He's likely to be more surprised by public apologies at this stage.

SOME O THE PEDESTAL CONSPIRACIES ARE JIST DAFT

user123212 · 14/10/2023 09:46

Rather, he’s Good Sir Graham up on his charger, nobly defending maidens.

I don't see anything wrong with this. He needs a motivation and I would like to think we'd all do this. We need more men who are willing to defend women, women's rights and vulnerable people in general. Somehow, in the name of equality we've lost heroism...

Ameanstreakamilewide · 14/10/2023 09:43

Poor old Graham. He's got a good heart and I'm not surprised that the article hurt his feelings.

You expect it from a Guardian writer, but not someone as august as Janice Turner.

Slothtoes · 14/10/2023 09:42

Exactly, or any of the self congratulatory free speech YouTube boys who have wierd attitudes to women. Some posters on here have lauded them. Or the libertarians like people from Spiked who minimise women’s issues until it suits them. They loathe feminism

Pedestals are mentioned so often, but I can honestly say I've never seen one in my 59 years, lol.
