Eddie Izzard - Guardian interview

The Guardian have just posted an invitation to put questions to Eddie Izzard. This feels like a great opportunity to get a well worded, gender critical question out there. The thing is I'm a bit stuck, collectively we must be able to come up with something though!

Post your questions for Eddie Izzard

Whether running for parliament or in multiple marathons, performing on film and in multilingual standup, the star will be here to tell you how on earth she does it

Obviously it's not about a single comment. As I said before I see these kind of snide remarks about transpeople all the time in GC discussions (here, on twitter etc) and for once I thought I'd challenge one rather than wince to myself.

And as the response has just been to double down and defend mockery and ridicule - I just don't want to be a part of this. It obviously doesn't change what I personally think and believe but I can opt in or out of engaging in the debate and when it's this toxic I'm not interested in playing any part in fuelling it.

That's your prerogative of course. No one needs to be part of a conversation if they don't wish to be.

I do hope, however, that you police the TRA death threats, rape threats, cries of "dried up old hag", "you're just jealous because TW are sexier than you'll ever be", criticisms that Sharron Davies looks like a man, that Martina Navratilova is less of a woman than 'India' Willoughby etc etc ad nauseum as assiduously as you try to tone police women here reacting to a man making a mockery of womanhood.

It’s been like that for years. If you had a bit of time to kill, it used to be fun watching the blizzard of deletions as mildly challenging comments and questions were posted on a controversial topic.

I used to imagine it was blue-haired interns imposing their furious dogma. But now I presume it’s just standard Guardian practice. I haven’t read it for ages. The real-journalism Guardian was a sad loss.

This was meant to quote UhOhGuys The guardians moderating policy has become so extreme in the past few years, it borders on suppression. Somebody should investigate it

Eddie, can you explain how you switch from boy to girl mode so easily? This will really help children who are being taught they need medication and surgery to be able to do this.

Excellent question. I can’t see the gutless Guardian allowing it. But I hope he may read this thread and think about it.

I am so, so sick of the guardian. I posted a very brief, very neutral question asking about plans to reassure GC feminists and it hasn't been let through premod

Perhaps, this will help. In 2016 someone did pictures of the Little Mermaid characters as real people. Here's the Ursula one. Compare it with a recent picture of izzard dressed as a Tunnocks teacake. Izzard is the one on the.... teacake....right!

Edited

Yep,it's very much a case of 'once you see it' and the resemblance is getting stronger as he ages.

I'm out, this is grim. I thought I was allied to the GC cause but you've lost me.

I clicked on those screenshots and, rather stupidly, was expecting to see riveting questions. Oh dear.

The question at the end about comedy for cheers rather than comedy for laughs was a good one I thought.

I'm sorry Loobi! We need a universal sarcasm emoji that we can use at the start of posts!

AlisonDonut · 11/10/2023 08:22

See I was going to believe in reality but someone was mean to Eddie Izzard and you all lost me. I shall continue to believe in fantasy and it's all down to you nazis.

I think it's more insulting to Ursula to be honest.

I've gone in soft.

Hi Eddie, I was always a big fan of your progressive views on fashion being open to all. Do you think that the definition of clothing and make up as being either 'girl mode' or 'boy mode is actually a step backwards in terms of breaking down the social construct of gender, in comparison to your previously held view that a dress wasn't for a woman, it was for an individual.

You made it!!
Well done

Ereshkigalangcleg · 11/10/2023 08:08

I thought I was allied to the GC cause

You should see what many TRAs say about women, if you base your support on how #kind people are. Or are rape and death threats ok in a way that mild mockery isn't?

TheHappyCarrot · 11/10/2023 07:56

@SoundTheSirens Denise has actually jokingly acknowledged the 'resemblance' previously.

Ah, this is where you are going wrong. You think that we are a hive mind who have "allies". And you think that once you are allied or part of "the cause" there are rules to follow and members can be coerced into all using the same language and parroting the exact same opinions whether we believe them or not.

You think that saying you find something offensive is enough to force others to be quiet.

I think most of us don't work like that anymore. We've seen what happens when everyone in a group has to fall in line all the time.

I think it's great you don't want Eddie to be compared to female cartoon characters because you find it offensive. It's a perfectly valid opinion.

It makes absolutely no difference to the problem of men like Eddie being allowed in women's spaces when they should use men's spaces.

waterlego · 11/10/2023 07:47

I’d want to ask Eddie if the switching between girl and boy mode is a choice or is it something spontaneous that just happens. Like does he just wake up some days and find he is in girl mode? If so, how does that work if he wakes up in girl mode on a day where he needs to be in boy mode for an acting role 🤔

Most men who transition have terrible taste in clothes, possibly because it is anew to them. You Eddie have been wearing women's clothes for decades so why did your dress sense disappear when you put on 'girl mode'?

NotBadConsidering · 11/10/2023 07:30

Ah I see we're advocating mocking and ridculing transpeople now.

Mocking the ridiculous claims of men.

I'm out, this is grim. I thought I was allied to the GC cause but you've lost me.

Oh dear. How sad. Never mind.

Keep going with your pandering to offensive men like Izzard if that’s less grim for you. Good luck with that.

SoundTheSirens · 11/10/2023 07:19

Generally speaking, I try to avoid commenting on people’s appearance.

But when certain people make their stereotyped appearance on any given day the essence of whether or not they’re a woman, insulting millions of women in the process, then in my eyes they’ve fired the first shot and are fair game for whatever ribbing might come their way.

Most people can’t help certain things about their appearance, and so those things shouldn’t be commented on. Eddie can help the fact he’s a 60+ year old bloke dressing and making himself up like a stereotype of a 1970s sitcom barmaid…he makes an active choice to do so, to fulfil a fetish, and therefore his choices and what they do to his appearance are up for critique.

(I don’t agree with the Denise Welch comment though…for Denise’s sake.)

Why are you such a misogynistic waste of space?
