BBC reporting on Glinner: a seismic shift, a coup or a rogue breakthrough that will be quashed?

This is a huge change from the BBC in how it's reporting on both Glinner and the concerns that he has on the impact of gender identity belief

Graham Linehan attacks cancel culture at Conservative conference fringe event

The comedy writer tells a free speech debate his views on gender have made it hard to find places to speak.

are you never allowed to laugh at men if they're gay?

what if they're ridiculous?

or is it impossible to be both ridiculous and gay?

Theeyeballsinthesky · 02/10/2023 21:20

Well I’m sure you can show us this tweet Steph

IwantToRetire · 02/10/2023 21:20

To get back to the OP rather than those who are just padding out another thread with words like homophobe etc., so that internet search engines can then say mumsnet is full of right wingers and homophobes. I know its tempting to respond but it only encourages them.

Whoops, now I've got caught up in the whatabouterry, which is making every thread on FWR the same.

No, the BBC is not taking a better informed line on Glinner.

This is the BBC trying to "smear" by association the Tory party for allowing someone who has been cancelled, by all the correct thinking elitists at the BBC, to have a platform.

Very similar to what C4 news did in reporting the Tory party conference, when saying that Kemi Badenoch got a huge round of applause for promoting right wing approach to various issues, and they included trans issues as being one of them.

Neither Rowling nor Linehan have been “hateful” to anyone. There’s a million £ prize on offer to anyone who can find a single transphobic thing in anything Rowling has ever said or written, yet you continue to think she’s transphobic and by extension (because of the T added to the LGB) homophobic too.

Such binary thinking from a non-binary champion, it’s extraordinary really. The TRAs are the ones most adhered to out-of-date gender stereotypes, when most of society couldn’t give a teeny-tiny shite how others choose to present themselves. It’s the most regressive, backwards, upside-down ideology that was ever dreamt up.

She recently guffawed at a gay man who said he had received abuse, apparently she thinks it's ok to do this because he runs a website that supports and celebrates LGBT (yes, trans included) people.

Now how do I get my million £? Is the prize offered by her personally?

Mrs Doyle, you're here!

There are many different ways to keep this thread on topic 😂

The BBC and his former colleagues were such shits to Linehan. He remains very funny, and I love his work.

I hope he makes his way back; and gets his reputation back.

What are the sexualities of Glinner and Rowling?

IMO These 2 public figures would appear to be the self-appointed spokespeople for the LGBT community in Britain.

Also as far as I know, neither of them has ever said that they are spokespeople for LGB or T.

The word ally is always a tricky one because it's so subjective. I think most people would interpret it as someone who doesn't share the same attribute/belief as someone else but will stand up against prejudice that this other person may experience. Much like JKR described in her essays. Bringing it back on topic, I've read similar words from Glinner. There was an interview he did in one of the papers a few months ago (mostly fairly neutral/supportive but the journalist made a bizarre dig at the sad and broken way Glinner ate his croissant, or something like that) where he talks about his trans friends and how they are supportive of what he's doing. He also talked about using their preferred pronouns, which is the main thing I remember from it because I also choose to use preferred pronouns in some circumstances (never a child and never where the specific clarity on sex is important... Also never where I don't feel the person warrants this kind of demonstration of respect that they hold a belief different to me).

What are the sexualities of Glinner and Rowling?

JK Rowling and Glinner are both, I believe, heterosexual.

Which is why it's so wonderful to see them standing up for the rights of gay people, particularly lesbians.

I think it's probably quite difficult for people steeped in an ideology of me-me-me to grasp that there are selfless individuals like Rowling and Glinner who are prepared to stand up for the rights of a group they themselves don't belong to.

But they're not "standing up for the rights of gay people".

I see them being hateful towards the LGBT community and I see Rawling "guffawing" at gay men who have been a target of abuse.

I also saw a DM article that had an excerpt from Linehan's book where he attacks the 3 main actors from HP, all because they dare to support LGBT people.

Hey Steph. This question has been perfectly addressed in subsequent posts but I wanted to pose my own query to you.

Not long ago, on a thread not that far away, a poster with very similar views to you suddenly disappeared when I asked them this question. Never seen again. Very sad. 😞I'm hopeful you can help instead.

Could you tell me, do you like PIE?

Definitely not the T. As any fule kno.
So you are talking through your arse IMO.

Melissamelisante · 02/10/2023 19:59

They stand for women's rights - but there's no conflict we are led to believe.

Difficult to think of anything more indicative of homophobia than defaulting to the assumption that I'm heterosexual.

These people show themselves at every turn.

I've changed my mind. Looks like Marge has yet another user name.

How can you say that about Stephannee? Marge would never go for something so obvious, Marge is a true genius at disguise.

Indeed Waitwhat23. Very strange choice from someone so ingrained in the ideology.

BonfireLady · 02/10/2023 18:50

QQ does anyone have an archive of this thread so far?

There are some interesting comments about police warnings. In the excerpts that have been published in the Daily Mail so far, he makes it clear that he's never had a police warning.

At the moment I can't see a reason why this thread would be taken down but you never know. Sometimes people deliberately try and make that happen. Sometimes threads accidentally stray that way.

I imagine Steph would faint with shock to know some of us aren’t even mothers!

heathspeedwell · 02/10/2023 18:48

There's a special type of agism and homophobia that assumes that because this site is called Mumsnet, none of us women posting can possibly be lesbian or bi.

It would be funny if it wasn't so blatantly prejudiced. And from people who sadly tell themselves that they are 'on the right side of history'.

That's what I was just thinking. I've seen quite a few of these posts almost identically stated by Margey.

Mind you, what an odd username to choose given the Stefonknee horror.
