NC for this.
For a long time I have always said to myself if a LWS event came near to me, the least I could do was go along and show solidarity. Seeing what has happened elsewhere has made me so angry, it would be time to stand up and be counted.

Now there is an event next week, and I'm really surprised how nervous, even scared I am about going along just to listen, and really just wanted to reach out for advice, support, whatever.

I'm worried about the vitriol of protesters, the attitude of the police. I have worked in pretty 'captured' sectors and am concerned about being identified on social media, or by acquaintances - I'm fairly sure there'll be old contacts, people I like and who I have had time for - protesting or certainly vocally supporting the shutting down of KJK on the day. I guess I personally run the risk of being publicly 'outed' and losing friends and contacts that will have a real impact on things I do that mean a great deal to me.

Yet I feel if I don't go I will always regret not standing up and showing KJK support on my doorstep. I'm even worried about DM-ing the local Women's Rights Network as I tweet with my full name. Perhaps if anyone is on this board they can PM here, or give some info about plans for the day?

Sorry I haven't seen any threads about this LWS event so apologies if there is one already.

Thank you for the photos.
I was totally struck by how the photos portray the two sides as more mature women and then young people and middle aged men.
then this made me laugh.

*I'm old enough to remember a very famous photograph where a Vietnam War protestor puts flowers into the barrels of soldiers' rifles.

I was thinking that next time we should all hand over a Tunnocks teacake.

Then tell them to tidy their room.*

Really good speeches. So well done everyone involved.

If someone like Letts, who makes his living poking fun at the lunacy surrounding politicians, now sees TRA aggression as a suitable topic, we can hope others will. Private Eye perhaps?

He is only able to write a satirical piece because there is now sufficient public awareness of the trans rights campaign and what it really means. People will believe both that women just tried to be heard, and that they were shouted down.

Credit to Posie and others who have stubbornly demanded their right to speak.

LarkLane · 09/10/2023 10:22

@starfruittree I was looking online in the early hours and couldn't see anything in the Echo, a bit surprising.
The bussed in rent a mob were the TRA's and "Robbie" from "Bristol". Oh and I'm glad the Jimmy Savile haircut person was mentioned.

I've also got a Nan crush on that amazing strong woman who did the piece into camera for Keir Starmer. What a gal!

LarkLane · 09/10/2023 10:18

I quite enjoyed reading that Letts article. He described perfectly these people to an even wider audience than the bystanders at the Alber Dock.

RebelliousCow · 09/10/2023 09:49

What really concerns me is the number of trade union representatives, members, Labour party delegates and activists who are happy to stand by and watch all of the above, and even take part.

Helleofabore · 09/10/2023 09:43

I always leave Hyde park with a sense of disbelief after these events. These protesters seem to have little idea about what they are shouting and how far what they are shouting misses the truth. And when you try to talk to them they are so defensively deaf that they accuse you of lying and just shout more.

The infantilising disguised as ‘caring’ messages they send out in their comms organising the event really just fits the nature of these protestors. They are so deep in their ‘safe space’ they cannot conceive what they are really achieving. In their chants, in their now very publicised intimidation and sometimes violence against the women who are actually saying ‘these are the male people we don’t want in female single sex spaces’ and in attempting to shut down free speech while declaring themselves to be tolerant, kind and loving.

It is so very contradictory to any person who is seeing them in action.

starfruittree · 09/10/2023 09:41

Agree with what pp have said about Letts. An example of the pen being mightier than the sword indeed.

Am surprised that the Echo do not appear to have covered it as yet. Perhaps something will be incoming today. Very much expected a predictable first-person piece from one of their legion LGBT+ activist reporters full of the usual biased guff.

He came back with " that's probably because they are not a big corporate body".

Well, he's not wrong, is he?

I find it really significant that Letts has written about this. How often have these kinds of events been written about in the mainstream press? OK, Posie's events in Australia were written up on the Mail Online website, but the stories seem to have been written by local pro-trans journalists.

In the UK press, although you've had journalists writing about gender issues, I don't remember seeing a national newspaper carry such an explicit, detailed account of the abuse that activists direct at women. And Letts is a political sketch writer of many years' standing, not a commentator like Janice Turner or Sonia Sodha. I imagine this story will be in the print edition as well as Mail Online. It will be read by the Labour leadership.

It feels as if something has shifted a little bit.

I wasn't aware that the man I was speaking with was Letts. I had told him that if the Labour party had given women a voice then this event would not be needed, and told him the LWD had been refused a stall for two years running.
He came back with " that's probably because they are not a big corporate or company ".

ArabellaScott · 09/10/2023 09:27

'Their words were lost in the volley of filth from the trans rights brigade, who were generally younger and, if they will forgive me, a good deal more masculine.'

FlipperSkipper · 09/10/2023 09:18

@Tarquina Far from it. I was there and got chatting to a few local women who were at their first ever event and had been ‘peaked’ by various things. As for the TRAs, we’ll a lot of them seemed to be men who saw this as an opportunity to verbally abuse women.

I doubt if Letts identifies as much other than a cynical world weary DM hack, albeit one with a way with words.

Agressive men shouting and intimidating women. If he can see it, others should. This is not a party political issue. The incursions on women's rights and safety are there in plain sight. This time visible from the Labour Party conference.

Lots of older beardy and balding bro's who really ought to know better. I wonder what they were really thinking as they were shouting?

Just seen the footage of men screaming abuse like 'shut your fcking mouth you stupid fcking tart'. So many aggressive, abusive men there. I don't know how TRAs can think this is a good look.

As well as the kids there quite a few 30+ year old men who were maybe conference goers or local Labour party activists. At one point the main sound was men chanting " Get the fascists off our streets". One young man stood on a bench jiggling his starter breasts and showing of his shiny red shorts.

RebelliousCow · 09/10/2023 07:50

Tarquina · 09/10/2023 00:09

I read TRA on Twitter claiming that Posie had only a handful of supporters "bussed in" and that they (the TRA) "won".

That's not what I saw on the video!

They didn't " win" but they did make a lot of inane noise. What they don't realise is that this was as much a public display of their behaviour as anything....and that was clear for all to see. I heard one photographer refer to them as 'demented'.

A lot of the noise came from one very short young woman with a loud hailer who used it to refer to herself as a transman. She was like the duracell bunny and didn't let up screaming the entire time. Posie actually referenced her at one point.

starfruittree · 09/10/2023 07:31

Don't think I've ever agreed with or enjoyed reading a Quentin Letts column in my life, but that was brilliant!

Ms Parker was at her microphone, saying women felt threatened by trans zealots.

The trans lot countered this suggestion by surrounding the small knot of feminists and screaming at them violently for more than an hour.

I did wonder what that masked line of youngsters thought facing the hi viz women.
"She looks like my sister/aunt/cousin/mum/nan/carer/teacher" etc etc

I'm old enough to remember a very famous photograph where a Vietnam War protestor puts flowers into the barrels of soldiers' rifles.

And wash their hair!

Let’s hear your review of this then Mish

'You stupid fucking terfs'
'shut your stupid fucking mouths'

is it a banger or no?

I image Fred will release a mix of it soon.

duc748 · 09/10/2023 00:27

But it's not some 'lads from some run down estate' is it? And frankly, not likely to be. These are our educated young people (by and large). Which is the saddest part.

IwantToRetire · 09/10/2023 00:19

I hear your anguish. I'm afraid you have to view it like a divorce or bereavement or irrevocable breakdown in a friendship.

Thanks could be - but for me it feels like being surrounded by another reality.

What is the parrallel universe that I have somehow time shifted into.

Aren't there enough real issues in the world without being totally caught up and walked over by all these immature incels, who too many doting parents are allowing to behave as anti social woman hating hooligans?

If they weren't nearly all posh boys, but lads from some run down estate harassing older women and shouting insults at them, the local paper would be full of outrage, and local councillors asking the police to keep an eye on these ruffians.
