'Louise Redknapp pulls out of Eternal reunion after her bandmates REFUSE to play LGBTQ+ festivals and Pride over claims they are being 'hijacked' by the trans community'

Louise Redknapp 'pulls out of Eternal reunion LGBT row with bandmates'

Louise Redknapp has pulled out of an Eternal reunion after two members of the band refused to play LGBTQ+ festivals and Pride on the tour.

Would Louise do ANY gigs if it weren't for Pride ones? It's her bread and butter.

To badmouth someone I'd say you have to attack them.
Accurately representing their views wouldn't fall into that category.
Interestingly you seem to suggest that Louise should have done the tour anyway, regardless of her views/ her own career/ desire to make more money? Why do her views count less than those of the Bennett sisters? Because they accord with yours @MargotBamborough ?

I think making incendiary comments about the Bennett sisters believing that the LGB are being taken over by the T and then smugly commenting that you support all the LGBTQ+ community, in a political environment where TQ+ activists are known to threaten and harass women who don't share their beliefs, is reprehensible.

All she had to do was mind her own business and get on with her own life. If directly questioned about why the reunion wasn't happening anymore she could have just said something neutral like, "it didn't work out" or "we didn't have the same vision".

How can Louise support LGBTQ when she is happy to see the trans lot trample on the L in LGBTQ ? Seems to me she is 2 faced.

Lol. Thanks for putting that awful song in my head all day.

I think the Bennett sisters are throwing the baby out with the bath water, here.

Pride is still the biggest collective celebration/movement for LGB people and in refusing to attend they are cutting out all of those people. Not to mention actively refusing to perform for anyone who is trans (surely the definition of being transphobic).

I hate the TRA movement, but I take my teen (lesbian) daughter to Pride because she doesn't have that kind of representation anywhere else.

She lives in a family full of straight people, experiencing homophobic comments at school and at one or two Pride festivals a year she gets to be amongst people like her.

Please don't @ me to explain the problems with transactivism - I understand and share them. But I often wondered if any of the people who post in this section of the site have ever attended a Pride event, there is a lot of good in the movement, it really isn't as polarised as people on here like to make out.

Where was there anything to say that they refused to perform for anyone who is trans?

It's the same old story when it comes to trans. Take a story completely out of context and embellish it. Wouldn't be surprised to hear "deny trans existence" next.

They were content to not play Pride, no-one has the right to force them to do that.
Louise and Kelle didn't want to do the tour if Pride wasn't included, do you think they should be forced too?
I've no doubt there will be a backlash, and there shouldn't be, but why should Louise be left in a position of either doing a tour she longer wants to do or making it look like she was the one who backed out?
They should have the courage of their convictions IMO.

You act like this was some major dilemma for her.

As if Eternal haven't been on the verge of doing a reunion for about 20 years and always not gone ahead due to "schedule clashes" or "creative differences" or whatever.

The number of people who would have said, "But WHY isn't Louise Redknapp performing at Pride events?!" is zero.

And of course she could still perform at them as a solo artist.

Literally no need for her to badmouth her former bandmates.

StephanieSuperpowers · 26/09/2023 13:34

Of course not. What a silly question.

Actions have consequences and the Bennett sisters are finding this out. If they’re going to hold these views, they can take the consequences without crying “poor me”.

They’ve always had a reputation as a pretty rotten pair and this has solidified it for me.

Ah, the good old "Consequence Culture" post.

In a couple of years time it will be you paying the consequence for holding these views, when people realise the harm that is being done to children.

ScholesPanda · 26/09/2023 13:33

Sorry, that should read 'content to continue the tour...'

They didn't want to play Pride, now they don't have to.
Seems like they got what they wanted, not sure what the problem is?

I think the problem is that they appear to have been content to not play pride and not comment on their reasons, which seems fine to me. However, now they've had an explanation made on their behalf, without their permission, one which has been shown in the past to provoke a very extreme backlash.

I would be less surprised if they didn’t play Pride at all due to their religious beliefs and believing that homosexuality is a sin. I wonder if this is a story where the narrative has been twisted by the TRAs or media to make it more topical and get headlines.

Oh yes, this is my thinking too. Longtime Eternal fan here and very aware of the Bennett sisters reputations. Have they ever played Pride? Not that I can recall.

MargotBamborough · 26/09/2023 13:05

I don't think Louise cares about anyone except Louise.

Eternal's original Manager has come out in support of the sisters and accused Louise of throwing them under the bus.

He's not wrong.

Given the threats and abuse that women with an opinion on this subject take, if Louise leaked this she should be absolutely ashamed of herself.

This from Louise's publicist suggests that it's virtue signalling.

"'Louise is a huge supporter and ally of the LGBTQ+ community and both herself and Kelle told the duo they would not work with anyone who held these views, and as such the reunion as a four would not be going ahead."

The "Always & Forever" tweet under the Progress Pride flag certainly looks like performative virtue signalling. Unfortunate that in order to maximize her virtue she also felt the need to throw her ex-bandmates to the misogynistic wolves.

ChokkaQuokka · 25/09/2023 22:47

I just find it extraordinary that when straight people, especially straight white women such as Redknapp, pontificate like this they think their virtue signalling is actually virtuous.

I am also impressed that the BBC reported the quote accurately as being a concern for LGB being taken over by the T.

And surely a band reunion of straight women should perhaps let Pride be an opportunity for newer LGB – or indeed TQ+ – performers?

These are pictures obviously set in the main streets of towns, with hundreds of people around so obviously in the thick of it. They aren’t photoshopped to look like that’s where they are. Do I think it’s absolutely everywhere at pride? No. Do I know where it is and how to avoid that? No. Do I want to risk my children being exposed to that? Also no. Is it desperately important they go to pride so I should start researching to know where is genuinely family friendly? Not at this stage no. If you make it hard for parents to know if it will be ok then you make it less welcoming for parents and children. I’m not being spoonfed anything, I’m reacting like a good parent perfectly capable of performing a critical assessment of newspaper reports and of looking after my child.

"Is it desperately important they go to pride so I should start researching to know where is genuinely family friendly?"

Not for you, clearly, so I'm guessing you don't have a lesbian daughter.

Is it important enough for me to do that work? Yes, yes it is.

The las - family friendly - pride event we went to we sat in the sun and shared a table with a lesbian couple in their 60s. They chatted to DD about her experiences of their event, they talked to me (when DD was off looking at the stalls) about what it was like for me raising a daughter who is a lesbian, and they shared their own experiences of coming out in a different time.

I'm quite sure your 'good parent' dig was meant to imply that I'm a shit one.

That's where you're wrong.

And you really do sound as thought you don't have the first idea, sorry.

And yet I've been to many pride events and never seen those things.

It's almost as though you can't think for yourself and rely on being spoon fed by the media.

You must be attending different Pride events to the many of us here who have seen these things.

ArabeIIaScott · 25/09/2023 15:33

We don't yet know what they said, or how they said it. It's just reported speech.

'The team behind the proposed Eternal reunion are gay including management, PR and tour promoter, and neither myself nor any of the team would work with artists who held such views about the trans community.'"

Is it a good idea for a publicist to be publicising that they refuse to work with people because those people fall into a category protected by the Equality Act?

Switcher · 25/09/2023 13:17

Not really a great loss either way, but certainly is a money-spinner for Louise to position herself like this. I have mixed feelings, but it's interesting that the PR statement talks about how the organisers of the reunion are gay; almost as if they're saying that if you won't play Pride, you are definitely homophobic. I'd have thought it's quite possible to not be very into Pride, and not be homophobic. But I guess these days you either run around with a progress Pride bandana around your head, or you're a nasty bigot.
