Double Murder Chelmsford

Apparently a woman has been charged with a double murder (parents maybe) - but there are no picture of the accused. Anyone else find this weird, or have I become an overly-suspicious harridan? Violent murder doesn't seem like a female crime...

Well no, because it was before modern policing and crime stats, and she killed victims who would not be missed (which is kind of my point). But even if her tally was at the lower end of what is generally atttibuted to her it is a far higher number than Shipman. in any case I only mentioned her to illustrate the broader point.

Edit: on a par with Shipman, my bad, i checked the numbers.

There's also a decent case to be made that women are underrepresented historically in murder stats as they (we) use methods and target victim profiles that are harder to detect, e.g. smothering / poisoning infants and frail elderly people. The UK's most prolific mass murderer by far was a woman, Amelia Dyer.

Erm…. Harold Shipman?! I’m sure Dyer probably did kill more than the 6 confirmed victims, but you can’t in any definitive way say she was the ‘U.K’s most prolific mass murderer by far’ 🙄

Yes, with stats being compromised (irrevocably?) by this lunacy. Another glorious by-product.

PurpleSparkledPixie · 11/10/2024 21:41

in other words there are about 60 murders a year by women.
Well that depends doesn't it. Scarlet Blake, aka cat killer, had their murder listed under women's crimes despite them being male. Makes you wonder how many others have been listed under our sex.

RoyalCorgi · 11/10/2024 21:15

I'm not sure why or how one would choose to compare a very small subset of males with all women. It would not be great data because the group "transwomen" is so hard to define, unlike sex. One wouldn't do this with any other subset of males.

It would be quite hard. There are about 600 murders a year in England and Wales. About 90% of those are by men, so in other words there are about 60 murders a year by women. (See: https://www.statista.com/statistics/1221306/homicides-in-england-and-wales-by-gender/)

I'd be surprised if there were more than 60 murders a year by trans-identifying men. Of course no one is gathering the data, so it's hard to be sure. And as you say, how would you define "trans woman"? We know there are men who start identifying as trans after they've been charged, but would have been recorded as men at arrest.

Using news reports, you could identify some individual trans-identifying murderers, but it wouldn't give you a complete picture.

England and Wales homicides by gender 2023 | Statista

Of the 590 recorded homicides in England and Wales in 2022/23, 416 of the victims were male and 174 of the victims were female.

wincarwoo · 11/10/2024 20:10

@LindorDoubleChoc the comparison is simply men vs women.

What?

GirlOverboard123 · 11/10/2024 20:19

Most murderers are men, but given the very small percentage of males who are transgender, I would be willing to bet (from what I've seen in the newspapers) that far more women than transwomen are convicted of murder. Virginia McCullough isn't even the only female murderer to be sentenced in the UK today: https://www.merseyside.police.uk/news/merseyside/news/2024/october/carer-jailed-for-murder-of-90-year-old-woman/

There's been at least two very similar threads (regarding Gareeca Gordon and Jemma Mitchell) of women on trial for very violent murders (both stabbed their victims to death, chopped up their bodies and disposed of them in suitcases), where posters were adamant (wrongly) that they must be transwomen, as women don't commit this kind of crime. So it's just a bit silly saying things like 'violent murder doesn't seem like a female crime', particularly as OP posted that just after Lucy Letby became the UK's most prolific child killer in modern history.

Perhaps it would be more sensible to follow the presumption of innocent until proven guilty, and if there's a guilty verdict wait for the mugshot to be released before you start questioning the person's sex. The accused could have been completely innocent for all OP knew.

OuterSpaceCadet · 11/10/2024 20:17

Could anyone link to a study of the number of murders committed by trans women as opposed to natal women in, say, the last 10 years? I'd be interested to read the stats.

Males committed around 94% or all murders in the year ending march 2023 according to office for national statistics.

I'm not sure why or how one would choose to compare a very small subset of males with all women. It would not be great data because the group "transwomen" is so hard to define, unlike sex. One wouldn't do this with any other subset of males.

Of transwomen in prison, it was reported earlier this year that more than 70% are there for sexual and violent offences.

I suspect with the push for self ID, the increasingly violent online rhetoric and the trans umbrella welcoming any old straight dude, pushing for trans specific statistics isn't going to yield results that appease people's concerns.

ElleWoods15 · 11/10/2024 19:06

No. The problem is people who are so obsessed with trying to find things to blame on trans women that they look for it in every single bad thing that happens in the world.

No, the problem is a growing trend for men to suddenly discover that they're trans and self-identify as women after being charged with a crime, and the media happily going along with their newly discovered identity.

The media can easily make the distinction by saying "male charged etc". Even reporting on gender at time of arrest would eradicate most of the false reporting.

This is why trust in the media is at an all time low.

Forgot the quote for my last post.

borntobequiet · 11/10/2024 19:57

Exaggerating, much?

We’ve seen enough reporting on violent women-not-women to make us suspicious of such stories.

Of course there have been violent and murderous women throughout history, though they tend to be remembered because they’re relatively rare.

OuterSpaceCadet · 11/10/2024 19:55

Of course women commit murder. The stats that tell us males commit around 94% of all murders clearly allow for this.

Obviously the odds are that a murderer is male. Men pose a far greater risk of violence to both men and women.

You can be sure the press will report heavily on the 6% of murderers that are actually female, for clicks.

The press has also been shown to be happy to lie about the sex of violent offenders, even when still at large and posing a risk to the public. Better that than to hurt a male's feelings.

Fuck me I cannot believe there are still posters in 2024 that think a man being a transwoman means the violent offending statistics don't apply! I'd love to understand the thought processes you go through.

Seriously though, you want me to pretend sex doesn't matter? Forget the feminists here, you need to go and talk to the lads about stopping all the rape and murder and male entitlement. Come back when you're successful.

Hope your dad’s doing ok @VerySadCase.

Thank you. I think the press coverage today has been very hard for him to watch. I understand why they're showing the videos but I think it's very disturbing for him to see her talking so calmly and coldly about it all. I can't imagine what it must be like for the other family members.

LindorDoubleChoc · 11/10/2024 19:41

yetanotherusernameAgain · 19/09/2023 07:11

It hadn't occurred to me. I think it's perfectly possible for such a crime to have been committed by a woman.

I'm commitedly gender critical but I agree and I don't automatically think a female reported in a crime is transgender. That's going a little bit nuts. There are female murderers. Of course it's much rarer - but it's still going to happen.

Could anyone link to a study of the number of murders committed by trans women as opposed to natal women in, say, the last 10 years? I'd be interested to read the stats.

There was a series of very serious crimes of violence reported locally to me recently, where the perp was described as a woman, when infact they were not a woman. So I know it happens, of course I do, but this doesn't make me believe that no woman ever commits serious crimes. I might be a little bit more cautious about the reporting, but not to the point of denial.

duc748 · 11/10/2024 19:32

Anyone see the piece on this crime on C4 News tonight? I can't recall previous cases where footage of a suspect being interviewed in custody is shown on the TV news?

wincarwoo · 11/10/2024 19:27

Funnily accurate reporting of the sex of offenders was not an issue until very recently.

Bit like how women never worried about finding a man in their spaces and sports.

What's changed?

The problem is that it is the boy who cried wolf, we have seen too many cases of extreme violence carried out by men who the media have reported are women, so that when a crime is carried out by a woman people are suspicious.

Clear and accurate reporting is important.

What a bizarre post. Murder is inherently violent. There have been violent female killers. I think if your first thought on reading about a murder is whether the culprit is trans based on absolutely nothing perhaps you're thinking about it way too much and need a break from the internet.

It must be so exhausting for people who live like this- looking to try and find something anti trans to rant about in literally every story they read! Tilting at windmills….

Toseland · 11/10/2024 18:03

The uneasiness can't be helped - the misreporting going on these days is outrageous and some journalists should be ashamed.

How did the other 3 daughters not notice their parents missing over 5 years?

This is intriguing. I’ve not heard of this case before today, so has this been answered in any of the other reporting?

Agree. This woman - biological woman - murdered her parents in cold blood. Women have been violent since time immemorial.
