I know it's a mistake but I thought this was rather funny :)

"Former Sun Editor Kelvin MacKenzie has praised Richard Ayoade’s show of support for cancelled comedian Richard Ayoade."

My father used to read the Daily Telegraph - definitely not my newspaper of choice - and I’d have a flick through it occasionally. On one of these occasions, I read a letter saying that its writer read the Telegraph because, many years ago, his University tutor told him that he shouldn’t read newspapers that only agreed with the views he already held.
I thought that was good advice and have followed a wide range of news outlets ever since.

No one could have a sincere belief in anything that isn't leftie politics.

Tell me that's sarcasm. I've been hurt before...

@PorcelinaV
I'm hoping my sarcasm meter isn't giving me a faulty reading on your post.

"GB news thrives on an is predicated on creating and exploiting divisions in society."

Funnily enough that's how I feel about The Guardian, BBC, Channel 4, The Independent, The Metro, etc.

Is there any news outlet that is not "predicated on creating and exploiting divisions in society"?

It's the nature of politics that it involves "division" and journalists make their money by writing or talking about it.

Presumably there are some good people, like at the Guardian, that are kind and compassionate people, and they just really want to raise awareness about issues they really care about.

On GB news, however, they are purely motivated by money. Or even worse, they just want to whip up hatred for the fun of it.

No one could have a sincere belief in anything that isn't leftie politics.

Tictok, blast it.

Tactol sounds like some kind of pill.

That's why I use TikTok. The algorithm sends me general GC stuff, then will throw in some GB News GC stuff. Then it goes, 'hmm, maybe Tibetan likes GB news' so feeds me more of their stuff.

It's quite an interesting take, because you're fed such tiny snippets and make a gut reaction judgement call on its value. Idgaf if watching/not watching GB news is acceptable on MN - but the majority of 'other' stuff fed to me on TikTok is so blatantly designed to be controversial to try and make themselves relevant/viral that it devalues whatever message they're trying to get across.

I might well agree with more of their views if I sat and watched it for a day, but I don't care enough. As far as I'm concerned they make their name from being goady and controversial, with presenters known for being so 'edgy and outspoken' they can't get work anywhere else.

You see what Toctol wants you to see then.

Snippets aren't arguments, what you are doing is turning any content simply into an instinctive reaction piece, rather than engaging. Essentially shutting down the possibility of thought.

Of course no one has time for everything, but you have no business characterizing a news channel you've never really seen.

WarriorN · 18/09/2023 09:03

GB news thrives on an is predicated on creating and exploiting divisions in society.

People thrive on creating and exploiting divisions in society.

The trick is to be able see through the bs.

itsmyp4rty · 18/09/2023 08:48

Of course the issue is that unless you agree that anyone who says the are a transwomen is 100% a women and should be welcomed into every women's space then you are transphobic. There is no discussion to be had beyond that.

Just reading this article on GL, it's an older one but I can't find anything to disagree with,

That should be..

and if you do

RebelliousCow · 18/09/2023 08:09

Also the lack of taught debating skills is very evident in many posts. There seems to be no understanding that it is possibe to argue from a persepctive one does not necessarily share. If you doesn't understand ( or even listen) the opponent's argument, how can you argue effectively against it.

In order to have some semblance of civilised discussion, rather than just name calling and abuse - you have to actually engage with the content of someone's argument. All we have above is the over-use of admonishing adjectives in order to put people down rather than deal with the issue.

When people don't feel they need to understand the opposite view, because they prioritise tribal alleginace and emotional response above all else then hostility and division ensues..........

Which is ironic goven we were supposed to be discussing the nature of division.

EasternStandard · 18/09/2023 08:07

I can see why we’re seeing change in the media.

If people feel the typical outlets are biased or captured then people will look for something else

The answer is don’t use state run to push an agenda not if you do expect push back

RebelliousCow · 18/09/2023 07:51

Someone has been taking primary level education classes in how to use adjectives to create maximum effect.

You’re beyond parody. I used your silly expression to show how ridiculous it is. You’re certainly still on your high horse and trying to force a narrative into someone you know nothing about. Keep watching your mind eroding nonsense - it’s showing. As for me, I have better things to read/learn from including - shock horror - sources diametrically opposed to what I believe in but not populist rubbish. Good luck with your journey down the rabbit hole!

And you are incredibly rude. Zero self awareness.

RebelliousCow · 18/09/2023 07:36

Moonwatcher1234 · 17/09/2023 21:06

Oh my goodness - now you’re going down the “good people on both sides” route. Dangerous. I’ll leave you to it

You cannot see past yourself, can you?
We are talking about larger patterns. What division means, in practice. How it is fomented. It is you who is the divisive element here - with your accusations ands ignorant hostility.

How would you even know if they have other content that's worthwhile if you won't watch them?

No one can force you to agree with stuff you don't find convincing. Restricting your viewing in fear that it might is crazy.

Sometimes a quote for a book is just a quote for an old friend's book by a fellow book writer.

I hope I can continue to enjoy the work of Richard Ayoade; I sincerely hope that him allowing a kind quote for Linehan's book was not an endorsement of Linehan's anti-LGBTQ rants.

Do you think children can be born in the wrong body then?

Do you think male rapists should be sharing prison spaces with vulnerable females?

Weird.

Rudderneck · 17/09/2023 23:00

TibetanTerrah · 17/09/2023 16:29

You mean, kind of like how Andrew Tate got such a huge following? Say one or two things that kind of make sense, people listen attentively and THEN you can go on endless nonsensical rants? Wink

Anyway, the trick with GB news is to only watch clips via your TikTok for you page. Sensible gender critical stuff only is fed to me Grin

How would you even know if they have other content that's worthwhile if you won't watch them?

I do not think the word "Objectively" means what you think it means.
I think people tell you what to think and you swallow it because you have no thoughts of you own. For instance you re-used my high horse because you just parrot whatever you hear.

Stop being so hysterical and ironically judgmental.

Hysterical, on the FWR board? I thought the pamphlet for Feminism 101 explained why calling other women hysterical was not comme il faut. Or comme elle faut I suppose.

I'd say that it was set up to give voice to those people and perspectives that were not being covered by the likes of The Guardian and the BBC - not just to "exploit division".

Divison only exists if one set of perspectives is not permitted exposure, and if one set of people think they own the truth, and are so morally pure that they must close them down.

Oh my goodness - now you’re going down the “good people on both sides” route. Dangerous. I’ll leave you to it

How do you know how utterly evil GB news is if you refuse to listen to what they have to say?

This feels to me like you are proud of how closed minded and divorced from reality you are. A while back Triggernometry had Aaron Bastani on their show for an interview. Arron owns and runs Novarra Media a website where I pretty much disagree with anything and everything they say. I found watching Aaron on Triggernometry really interesting, he was very polite and honest, I got to understand his perspective a bit. It dispelled my metal image of him being an idiot, and I thought he came acroos as a good person. I'm glad I watched the episode.

When you dismiss a media outlet out of hand through blind tribalism you lock yourself into only ever hearing the news and opinions you want to hear. You are looking to have your own biases reenforced and choosing to live life in a bubble where you only ever hear people who agree with you. This is really unhealthy. It also promotes the tribalist la la la I can't hear you divisions in society. Your high horse isn't nearly as tall as you think it is and it's a braying donkey not a horse.

Well I feel embarrassed for you and your ridiculous assumptions. I have watched it and come to the conclusion I have employing my critical faculties and not losing my mind and objectivity just becaus they may adopt the same stance on an issue that I agree with. Stop being so hysterical and ironically judgmental. Objectively they have a nasty agenda - just look at their backers - and I think most decent people can see that so get off your high horse

Ugh please - this mentality is so damaging. GB news thrives on an is predicated on creating and exploiting divisions in society. Don’t try she pretend there’s anything more to it - nobody is obliged to mindlessly absorb toxins just because they might be on the right side in the whole trans debate. Stopped clocks etc
