Asking someone’s pronouns is as important as finding out their name

No it really isn’t. Does anyone really meet a new person in a social setting and say ‘hi I’m Doris and my pronouns are hee/haw, what’s your name and pronouns?

Talking about pronouns isn't a chore – it's like asking someone's name

Making your pronouns clear is no different than people clarifying that your name is, in fact, just ‘Becca’ and not ‘Rebecca’.

It’s a bit like when someone wants you to guess their age. It is embarrassing because I WILL get it wrong.
I sort of wish someone would Ask me my pronouns so I could say «Guess!».
That would be marvellous.

Alas no pronoun madness in my neck of the woods.

My DS delighted me yesterday when he mentioned that one of his teachers introduced herself with pronouns and asked the class if they would like to share theirs. He said not one of them did. Apparently she was very disappointed. According to him, no one in the high school is interested in this shit.

My 18 year old and his friends are exactly the same. They are very open minded and take everyone as they are but they don’t have time for this pronouns nonsense.

A girl his school transitioned at 13 - though obviously I don’t know whether surgery etc was involved just that now Hannah was now Harry. The kids just accepted this with a shrug of the shoulders and an ‘oh well’ and carried on with their lives.

If someone looked at me waiting for my pronouns I’ll just stare back at them. If they ask, I’ll just say “what do you think”. I won’t entertain it

I love Erin's cat!

I loathe all the pronoun shit, but I sort of want to start using 'hee/haw' now Grin

Cherrylily7 · 20/09/2023 09:59

@DustyLee123 well said, just about sums it up

Excellent that the kids didn't submit to pressure

No

HohiyiKozbevi · 20/09/2023 08:35

It's as inappropriate as asking someone's age, sexuality, religion, caring responsibilities, pregnancy status etc. Only wholeheartedly sexist people will have a simple answer, the rest of us will have a quite complex understanding of a balance of factors affecting issues of our obvious awareness of what sex we are nuanced by the extent to which the sexism of our upbringing and society has either made us accept or reject ideas of gender (with a mixture of the two for most people) and really that's not a conversation that it's appropriate to have with someone you have only just been introduced to.

Well yes it is. When you get to know someone you find out basic details

@Mrskettleson - you've obviously done a sterling job of bringing up your son. Well done to you both!

Pronouns actually make me want to stab people. Just fuck off.

Same here. Or at least yell "I don't fucking CARE!"

Adarajames · 17/09/2023 11:24

My line manager added pronouns recently to her email signature; I def lost some of my respect for her.

only pronoun badge I’ll agree to wear says ‘Fuck that shit’!

turbonerd · 16/09/2023 21:40

It just dawned on me that with these totally personal pronouns, why would we even need names?
Names are totally oppressive! Assigned to you by someone you barely know sometimes even before your birth.
Sometimes they aren’t even unique to you; oftentimes oodles of others in your school have the same name as you.

Let’s do away with names and just wait for the kiddywinks to tell us their pronouns, and all will be well.

Henceforth me pronouns are Eternal Ruler, Supreme Chancellor of This And Any Known Galaxy in This Universe And Beyond / Now.

Notooserious · 16/09/2023 21:13

It has not yet been made compulsory for us but when it is, as I foresee it will, that is “dr/dr’s” or you can just fuck off with your bollocking nonsense. Such utter virtue signalling titwankery.

MelodiousThunk · 16/09/2023 10:15

In fact thinking about it when it was introduced a few years ago I’m pretty sure it was pitched at helping out foreign colleagues who might be embarrassed at not knowing how to refer to someone as they couldn’t figure out your sex from your name. Of course if you are say, Dutch, you would just ask, but for other nationalities that would be very embarrassing.

ZeldaFighter · 16/09/2023 10:10

In the olden days, I would have said it's quite useful if Chris, Sam, Phil and Jo stated their pronouns because I hated calling someone she a he - I felt sexist for assuming a male default.

Obviously Grace, Anne, Kylie and Andrea didn't need to, neither did Elliot or Isaac.

Nowadays a male or female name is no guarantee of sex.

(Austin still seems to be both however.)

Pronouns are a great way of announcing you are a complete narcissistic bell end and anyone with a brain should avoid you. So they serve a purpose.

I work for an American company and I would say the majority of my American colleagues do it, or at least have it set in the company directory so it automatically gets added to their name in video calls. Possibly they set it once and forgot about it. Lots of our Indian and Japanese employees do too. They consider it a courtesy to help out people unfamiliar with Indian and Japanese names.

Brits and other Europeans universally don’t bother.

Mine

What's a pirate's favourite letter?
You'd think it'd be Arrr but his true love be the C.

Chersfrozenface · 16/09/2023 09:18

An association whose events I used to attend now has pronoun badges.

If I ever go again I am so demanding a different badge for each day of the event.

Any pushback and they'll get the full "transphobic bigot" rant.

Waitwhat23 · 15/09/2023 17:57

There's a video kicking about on Twitter at the moment in which some fuckwit explains, very earnestly, that they use colour coding in their bio to indicate which pronouns they feel like today - purple, pink or blue.

It's just such narcissistic navel gazing. As if anyone else gives a tiny, shiny shit.

Was that the young girl who used 🙄 the pink heart for her femine days and the blue heart for her masculine days, but had now decided to go by they/them unless ... God knows after that. I watched it thinking one day little girl you will realise how you wasted a decade of your life where you could be having carefree fun instead you spent it despairing of the fact that people struggled using a different coloured heart neo pronoun depending on which way the bloody wind was blowing that morning and whether you had left the house in trousers or a skirt!

But It's nothing to do with stereotypes??

OK!!
