Is this really fair on the groom who has gone onto the show to meet a woman and is matched with a TW without his knowledge until after the ceremony?

I know some will say it’s only a reality tv show but surely if the groom thinks he’s being matched with a woman, this is wrong.

MAFS UK's transgender bride kept her past hidden until after wedding

It's the Channel 4 programme where singletons don't meet their spouse-to-be until they are at the altar.

As much as I think these programmes are unethical anyway, surely they had an interview with him and asked questions like 'are you attracted to trans women?' And 'are you willing to be in a relationship with a transwoman, knowing that biologically she is male and also that she will never be able to bear children?' Because if he signed up for it then that's one thing but if that conversation never took place and they have paired a heterosexual man with a transwoman despite him declaring that he was only interested in women, then that is awful.

hamstersarse · 13/09/2023 18:18

A lot of people have been peaked by going on dating sites and not being able to discern the true sex of the potential match - this show will almost certainly peak a whole new demographic so maybe its a good thing

LizzieSiddal · 13/09/2023 18:17

I actually expect the groom will be fine with it or the TV show wouldn’t be showing it. Also Ella wouldn’t be doing these interviews saying they are happy with the show, if his groom had reacted in a negative way.

He was probably asked what his preferred gender identity of partner is. He will have ticked woman or female not understanding that the tv company are working to an entirely different definition of those words than he is.

I bet that's it!

Yes I saw that and wondered who the groom was going to be, a bisexual man, maybe?

As a bisexual person I would like to state that being attracted to both sexes does absolutely NOT make you unquestionably OK with dating trans people.

I would never date a transman or transwoman.

faban · 13/09/2023 18:16

I was thinking about this and he must have been asked at the interview if this is something he'd be comfortable with. If not then it's absolutely out of order

DoItAgainPlz · 13/09/2023 18:15

This would be sexual assault, surely? Even if they do nothing more than kiss.

LizzieSiddal · 13/09/2023 18:15

Ella said 'They need the education, but I don't want to harp on about it to everyone, I would rather them watch the show and see that I'm as normal as the other girls and relatable and hopefully people from that will feel that they can talk openly and date trans girls whether they are pre or post op.'

Hmm no love, that ain’t going to happen.

Unless he ticked a box saying he'd be happy to match with a transwoman then this is very very wrong. Not surprising MAFS has done this. Once it became the car crash trash show it is the past couple of seasons anything was possible.

As a little add on, I read recently that Michelle and Owen from the last of the 'traditional style' seasons are still happily married and expecting a baby. Delighted for them.

He was probably asked what his preferred gender identity of partner is. He will have ticked woman or female not understanding that the tv company are working to an entirely different definition of those words than he is.

Instant annulment surely. No consummation. No chance of children.
And she says she's just like other girls. Inflated boobs, inflated lips, and who knows what else artificial.
I'm sorry for them both, but him in particular.

hamstersarse · 13/09/2023 18:13

It's a strange show but there is some level of informed consent usually - I don't think it is unethical per se. It might be against your morals or values but that is different

Alleycatz · 13/09/2023 18:09

It doesn’t marry them anymore than Love Island does. This is very very wrong.

So you're saying it's totally cool and ethical to pressure strangers to pretend they're married for the purposes of entertainment?

Its a completely unethical show to start with, trans contestants or not.

SpamPie · 13/09/2023 18:11

What if the other man wants children?

hamstersarse · 13/09/2023 18:11

There are some men who I could completely see 'kicking the shit' out of another man who did this level of deception, especially if they had been intimate in some way. I'd hope the groom is not that type of man.

TinaYouFatLard · 13/09/2023 18:10

You would think they would have learned the lesson from There’s Something About Miriam. I listed to a podcast about that and it was tragic.

ActDottie · 13/09/2023 18:09

I’d be pretty pissed off if I was the man. I can only assume they ask in the matching process whether they would be happy being matched with someone transgender.

Alleycatz · 13/09/2023 18:09

Flickersy · 13/09/2023 18:07

Wait wait wait.... are you telling me a TV show which marries people who've never met for the purposes of entertainment isn't ethical??!

I'm shocked!

Come on, the entire thing is an unethical shitshow.

It doesn’t marry them anymore than Love Island does. This is very very wrong.

LizzieSiddal · 13/09/2023 18:09

Agree that unless this man ticked a box to say he wouldn’t mind marrying a transwoman and that he was bisexual, it’s a disgusting thing to do to him.

PuttingDownRoots · 13/09/2023 18:09

Its not fair on either of them. They don't know how rhe groom would react.

Flickersy · 13/09/2023 18:07

happydappy2 · 13/09/2023 17:40

Very unethical, potentially sex by deception surely?

Wait wait wait.... are you telling me a TV show which marries people who've never met for the purposes of entertainment isn't ethical??!

I'm shocked!

Come on, the entire thing is an unethical shitshow.

YouJustDoYou · 13/09/2023 18:05

It's exactly as if they paired a straight man with another man for example - they've paired a gay man with a straight man WITHOUT TELLING the straight man, who doesn't get turned on by penis/men, with a man. It's vile deception.

YouJustDoYou · 13/09/2023 18:03

happydappy2 · 13/09/2023 17:40

Very unethical, potentially sex by deception surely?

Exactly!!

Flickersy · 13/09/2023 17:53

Anyone dumb enough to go on MAFS deserves everything they get, frankly. Not sure they can complain they didn't get given their perfect match. Its cheap tawdry entertainment.

SamW98 · 13/09/2023 17:51

Does anyone remember There's Something About Miriam? Men on there were paired with a TW without their knowledge and several took out lawsuits against the producers.
