MAFS - first transgender bride.

Is this really fair on the groom who has gone onto the show to meet a woman and is matched with a TW without his knowledge until after the ceremony?

I know some will say it’s only a reality tv show but surely if the groom thinks he’s being matched with a woman, this is wrong.

MAFS UK's transgender bride kept her past hidden until after wedding

It's the Channel 4 programme where singletons don't meet their spouse-to-be until they are at the altar.

Either way, the number of men who have become women is zero

if a man is attracted to women and trusts an organisation to match him up with a potential romantic partner (leaving aside the question of why you would do that to yourself), they should be matching him up with a woman, not attempting some sort of forced conversion to homosexuality

WaterThyme · 14/09/2023 07:45

I wonder if the husband-to-be was told he was being partnered with a transwoman but didn’t know what that meant.

Either he thought it meant a woman who was transitioning to be a man, as many do.

Or he had very limited understanding of the profound differences between female and male bodies.

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 14/09/2023 07:45

Channel 4: we’ve matched up bloke A who was looking for a romantic relationship with a woman with bloke B who has had loads of cosmetic surgery but didn’t tell bloke A. Tee hee!

Anyone normal: OMG that’s incredibly unethical, what the fuck Channel 4?

Channel 4: oh all right, we knew it was unethical too but wanted to pretend it wasn’t so we lied to you. Calm down

Jesus

Once ordinary men (not TWAW beardy blokes) start seeing this nonsense affecting them it will hopefully speed up the return to normality. The only problem is that it's not a show watched by many men.

DdraigGoch · 13/09/2023 23:07

Interesting to see the change in the DM article compared with when I first read it earlier. Then it used the term "assigned male at birth", now it simply states "born male".

TinselAngel · 13/09/2023 22:56

It is not the same as a shit TV show confecting drama by withholding information. Calling this gaslighting cheapens the meaning of the word.
Take my word from somebody who has been there, it is gaslighting.

PaperWalkAndTalk · 13/09/2023 22:56

Also it would seem that Channel 4 thought that this would make good TV, by having a man shocked to find out that his wife is trans and then for a (presumably) happy ending, or if it fails just call the man transphobic.

But then someone must have told the channel that this actually constitutes sex by deception, so now they've had to say that everyone knew in advance and that it was all acted, otherwise they would be in a lot of legal trouble.

Channel 4's attempt at tabloid shock has backfired.

PaperWalkAndTalk · 13/09/2023 22:45

I think the narrative C4 keep pushing (like with First Dates, and I assume this) will be that the man is surprised that the woman is actually trans, essentially there is no difference between women and trans women. I doubt there will be a reaction of "yeah, it was obvious".

Of course they are. It’s not an episode of Midsomer Murders, it’s a reality show.

A highly contrived "reality" show.

DoItAgainPlz · 13/09/2023 22:16

Of course it's gaslighting - it's social gaslighting. It's about erasing boundaries, convincing the viewer that they have to accept someone as the sex they're not, even when intimacy is involved.

Gaslighting is serious psychological abuse.

They're not gaslighting anyone, it's a fecking reality TV drama which anyone with half a brain cell knows is highly contrived. Artificial plot twists are not gaslighting.

So ... they weren't gaslighting the contestant - instead they were gaslighting their viewers.

2 to 3 months!
Is that to give the cast time to get to know each other? 😂

Rudderneck · 13/09/2023 21:49

I kind of think the whole thing is unethical to start with. Enough so that I don't real feel that this makes it more unethical, IYKWIM.

Myalternate · 13/09/2023 21:46

Channel 4 is a British free-to-air public broadcast television channel owned and operated by the state-owned Channel Four Television Corporation. It is publicly owned but, unlike the BBC, it receives no public funding and is instead funded entirely by its own commercial activities, including publicity.

Do the participants get paid?

Is it a one-off show or shown over several episodes so that the audience get to learn more about the characters?

Not sure about getting paid - presumably they have expenses of some sort. The show goes on for about 2-3 months so there’s a lot to learn as it goes along.

I'll reserve judgement until I know for certain whether or not the groom was prepared/forewarned of it.

I'm as gender critical as they come but I do know that there are men who are happy to have relationships with trans women. That's fine afaic.

If the groom had no clue and was duped then that will be unethical on a massive scale.

But a Channel 4 spokesperson confirmed to the MailOnline that 'the groom was told that the match found for him was a trans woman'.

The Mail article has been changed quite significantly since it was first published. It’s a great big hoax on the viewers, the “shock” when he was told is just acting.

How low can TV go?

How the fuck did I get to this age without knowing that?!

It’s not something they advertise for very obvious reasons…..

Of course none of us have yet seen the man who will be paired with this person with the large wrists and fake bosoms.

In my mind's eye I'm picturing a 6'5" Jack the Lad from Essex with a love for sunbeds, white teeth and tattoos.

The reality might be that the man is a colourful beardy bloke from Bristol who is prepared to both live and die by the TWAW sword.

RedToothBrush · 13/09/2023 21:34

TinselAngel · 13/09/2023 21:26

They had to tell him because they know it's likely to be a big deal, but then they pretend there's no need to have told him because it's not a big deal. And those of us watching it are supposed to think it's not a big deal.

It's gaslighting and brainwashing.

And of course when it happens to married women, its not a big deal either.

Except of course it is. And everyone deep down knows it is. But don't want to say it.
