Her HR team need a reminder (or informing) that sexual orientation is a protected characteristic under the Equality Act, as is gender critical belief.

fromorbit · 23/08/2023 09:31

They are going after Jenny's job. Her latest statement.

So, I'm getting called out for supposedly making up the whole thing about our events getting cancelled. What I'm about to write might seem overkill ('cos it is) but this is where I am at right now:
"What in the world are you trying to convey? TRAs have demanded that venues don't hold my events due to my views (that lesbians don’t have penises…), and the venues have caved in, obviously. When I attempted to secure new venues, guess what happened? I have screenshots to prove this, and I'm happy to share them. But right now, all of this is making my head spin.

Just one week ago I was hosting a wee event that spread a bit of joy. Suddenly, everything has unravelled because a MAN refused to respect the boundaries of WOMEN at a LESBIAN event. No falsehoods here buddy. It’s been an utterly mind-boggling and also scary experience. Why do you think I would lie? What would be the point? What do I gain from that? Absolutely nothing. All that's happened is me losing a significant portion of my income, and receiving a bunch of nasty threats and (false) accusations. Sure, I've had lots of support but my life has also been completely upended.

Contrary to what some people are saying, dealing with media attention is far from enjoyable. However, if it’s necessary to reclaim my life back (and expose the shit out of this dogma) then I’ll go ahead and do that too. While attention might boost some people's self-esteem, it’s not having that effect on me. If you look at the comments section on YouTube, you'll find remarks like “With a face like that, no wonder she's a lesbian," along with numerous critiques about the way I speak (I was shitting myself with nerves so yeah, I wasn’t eloquent). I’m a socially anxious person (when beer isn't involved) but am trying my best to hide this during interviews. Please go ahead and brush this off as a melodramatic tale though.

I've lost my side hustle, it was my income. As for my 9-to-5 job, HR is conducting an investigation, and my face is everywhere in the media (I am not opposed to this and think it’s important but it still feels weird and uncomfortable; I can't even watch the videos because it makes me cringe). Please refrain from accusing me of deceit; find another target for your bullying. I didn’t want this, they did; and they got it."

ChokkaQuokka · 16/08/2023 14:11

I see where you’re going with this, but I think it goes deeper than that. It’s more that once you’re outside the inner city gay ghetto and official organisations, trans people don’t even pop up. There are plenty of lesbians of various ages around my district, but no TW have announced their presence. Scouts, teams sports and school events just don’t attract QT people’s attention. All the trans people I know are from subcultural connections and old friends and acquaintances. Not l where I live now.

in other words, trans people are distributed very unevenly. Which is why a lot of the issues with gender vs sex don’t register for many non-LBG people unless the school system has been overrun. Very much a class issue, too.

DaphneDeloresMoreheadRidesOn · 16/08/2023 13:35

there are plenty of ways to avoid the QT homophobes – if you’re of a certain age and stably coupled. The homophobia of the Q T world isn’t evident at suburban school pickup when you’re a middle aged lesbian couple with primary school kids. I can attest!

that's probably because you're a boring, old, middle aged woman. Gay or not, we are all just invisible. I imagine these people want to be affirmed by what they consider sexy young lesbians. As a middle aged one you're probably only of interest if you are gatekeeping something they want, like a changing room.

Helleofabore · 16/08/2023 13:19

To be fair, I have not studied the act since the late 90s when I did IR at uni. I chose another career. So I have not reviewed it closely enough.

Well, let’s see what happens in sal’s case now that HREOC have got involved. We might find Gillards inclusion of Gender in the federal act in 2013 tested. Haven’t the sports associations made noises about how they are powerless against the federal law for exclusion. I thought Kieran Perkins said something along those lines recently too (now there was a disappointment!) .

They are not powerless. The federal Act allows single-sex sports explicitly.

but as this is an Antipodean detail of the UK speed dating thread, I’ll start a new one.

The Equality Act defines a sexual orientation as an orientation towards someone of the same sex, opposite sex, or either sex. But the problem is the Equality act doesn’t define what “sex” means. The GRA says that you literally become the sex you identify as for all legal purposes. So my worry is that given the weird interaction between the EA and the GRA it could very well be argued that a lesbian is anyone of the female sex attracted to other members of the female sex … which would include male individuals who have changed their sex under the GRA. We might end up like in Australia where those women were told they couldn’t exclude transwomen from their lesbian groups.

Just to clarify, that ruling is only for Tasmania not the whole country.

Tasmania’s Anti Discrimination Act has “gender” and “gender identity” but not sex as characteristics. https://www.legislation.tas.gov.au/view/whole/html/inforce/current/act-1998-046

this isn’t true for other states of federally.

There are ways of lesbians avoiding these people but it really means living a life that is barely part of mainstream society. I assume that is the point of the horseshit people.

lesbian here. I see where you’re coming from, but would reassure everyone that there are plenty of ways to avoid the QT homophobes – if you’re of a certain age and stably coupled. The homophobia of the Q T world isn’t evident at suburban school pickup when you’re a middle aged lesbian couple with primary school kids. I can attest!

the problem is when you’re young and still settling into a friendship group, single, or moved to a new city. That’s why this action by the QT activists is so despicable and why LGBA is so needed.

All power to Jenny’s arm!

This.

Settled and middle aged, friends ignore all this in their couples and families, and the local groups I knew have gone underground to avoid it.

Thank God I'm no longer that vulnerable, newly out eighteen year old who relied on the local adverts to find the groups and supportive older lesbians who helped so much. I worry a lot about the current youngsters who will find those groups advertised and their participation and acceptance will be conditional on them nodding vigorously and swearing, (possibly with fingers behind their backs) that they are absolutely braced and ready to get their knickers off for any male who commands on the grounds of his identity trumping their reality and autonomy.

You may be publicly lesbian these days only if you are in fact (at least in what you say) bi, enthused about penises, shout frequently about how many wonderful lesbians have penises, and do exactly what you're told by male people and their 'allies'.

If you're actually homosexual, you're supposed to do it in secret behind closed doors and not ever speak about it in case of polluting people. It's like the seventies are back, just with one hell of a lot more tedious and boring people all over the place, flapping flags and shouting bollocks.

@Helleofabore - the presentation of these groups as peaceful or loving is clear horseshit.

There are ways of lesbians avoiding these people but it really means living a life that is barely part of mainstream society. I assume that is the point of the horseshit people.

I hope the LGBA pursue all these cases and go for damages if possible. Financial cost bothers business; get to the bottom line and it changes how they behave.

Incidentally I would love to know Stonewall's actual view on this incident.

Froodwithatowel · 16/08/2023 08:42

Oh and homophobia, racism and ageism.

Lovely lot, this lobby. Not many vulnerable groups they don't loathe and deride.

Yes. Ask 'what is a woman' and the answer is an empty simulacrum stripped of embarrassing bodily functions, a pneumatic pornified doll for sexual purposes. Sex positive, sex work positive lib fem who represents male desire and caters for the male gaze.

It's not women with bodies. Its disembodied ideas. It's not women with ideas, beliefs or feelings. It's not women with children, or caring responsibilities. 'Women's rights' are reduced to the ability to control her reproduction, so that she can be used for sex as required and used for babies to order.

'What is a woman' - to these people the answer is 'whatever I say she is'. As if a biological fact could be altered by men's feelings or beliefs.

The whole premise is about severing the link between women and their bodily lived experience and creating a fake connected idea of the feminine so that it can be used to manipulate and control women.

Froodwithatowel · 16/08/2023 09:01

go on a lot about the evils of homophobia - but only for homosexual women who will not validate a male person's identity with their body

Who WILL validate, obviously.

It's very hard talking in constant word salad through not being allowed to speak the truth plainly and clearly in case of offending.

Froodwithatowel · 16/08/2023 08:59

Just to spell out in depth as there are some new readers around and I hope some politicians needing the peter and jane version: please go and check what I say here. In depth. Look at the evidence.

This political lobby (many of whose loudest and most influential voices are not themselves trans, so it's interesting to reflect what motives are going on there)

  • go on a lot about the evils of homophobia - but only for homosexual women who will not validate a male person's identity with their body in straight sex and 'learn to cope', and say they are 'lesbian' while actually being bisexual. They associate with those who openly discuss violent assault, corrective rape and murder for those who will not comply and wish to be homosexual with the meaning of sex involved.
  • go on a lot about the evils of racism, but are supportive only of those of other races as and when their narrative supports the political agenda. When someone of another race has a need that conflicts, the rhetoric moves to 'need to get over ancient patriarchial faiths' and sees women who won't reject their faith, beliefs, culture and community at their command as - well, yet again, go to terfisaslur and see for yourself how such women are spoken of, and what imagery passes through the mind of someone of this political belief. Sexual violence is front and centre. It's always sexual.
  • go on endlessly about the evils of patriarchy, but insist that 'woman' is a disempowered bunch of gender stereotypes and are trying to undo years of work by removing women's ability to meet without male supervision and control, their names for themselves, their equality of access to public spaces or to have access at all in some cases due to specific issues related to being a biological female as a fact that cannot be hidden because a male finds it upsetting to be aware of, their access to health care and their ability to talk about their bodies, their pregnancies.
  • go on endlessly about the evils of colonialism and their shame in Britain's past - while failing to see the really awful irony.

Please do not blindly believe me. Go and see for yourselves. Critically examine every part. I have every confidence that the evidence will speak for itself, but I have no interest in controlling the narrative or what other people think.

NoMoreLifts · 16/08/2023 06:39

Yes, I read this one too.
This part jumped out for me:

We’re all learning new things about ourselves all the time – that’s what growth and development is about.

It's me, me, me. Look outside yourself. Whole world out there. Obvs you can sleep with who you like (if you both / all want to). Doesn't need it's own special name. It's a bit ,,,, self-absorbed. Expected, and usually tolerated, in teenagers.

Ughhh, 'abrosexual' 🤔Proof that most of this is just people with nothing particularly exciting going on in their life wanting to be seen as one of the special oppressed people.

God it's so tiresome.

She must have a real stiff neck from all that navel gazing twaddle.

Helleofabore · 16/08/2023 08:54

Froodwithatowel · 16/08/2023 08:40

It does. The LGBA would be fantastic in court on this based on their last showing, and I don't see that this homophobia has a leg to stand up. But it has to be clearly set in court, as Maya did for women, that no, this can't happen, and the compensation bill will be big. AND push the government another step down the road to fixing the Equality Act as a shield for women against over entitled men, and repealing the GRA.

The activists have pushed it to the point that the repeal of the GRA is now eventually inevitable. They have demonstrated that there are those who cannot be trusted to respect other people's rights or maintain their own balance and simply will use and abuse until the law produces sufficient boundaries and consequences to enforce the respect of others. This has nothing to do with being trans. This has everything to do with misogyny, sexism and abusive behaviour.

I too see this as adding to the reasons for clarifying the EA. I know it has been contentious, but now that these venue cancellations are happening regularly, it is clear that certainty is needed going forward.

Such as Maya’s case. Such as Allison’s case. Such as the case for the Christian bakers.

Either the law has to be tested or tightened. I would prefer it to be tightened so these issues don’t happen again.

Helleofabore · 16/08/2023 08:49

Anxioys · 16/08/2023 08:22

That is concerning and definitely needs litigating.

But I do think also that this is about social compliance- the threat is to the business and its reputation.

What is the threat here? Groups of protesters outside venues. No business wants that. They will be nervous that the police will not disperse them and they would be right to worry.

It's not the alleged discrimination against trans people but what enforcement there is in law to run an event peacefully. That is what business is concerned with.

Yes it is about social compliance.

From a group who tells the world they are the most tolerant and most loving.

On the other hand, the more these news stories get publicised, the less people will be unthinkingly supportive towards this group’s demands. By that I don’t mean that they will be less supportive of that group not being discriminated against for being transgender, but less supportive of being told that males are now female and everyone needs to agree and fall into line. And being told they have to believe the falsehoods.

Such as this group is the most tolerant and loving.

It would be better if it goes to court for sure because of the publicity it will get. However they have no case so a sane lawyer would advise them to settle way before that. Unless they have closed down their public function room entirely they can't get away with just banning a particular group legally. This is what happened with Cherry in Scotland the venue thought they were allowed to ban lesbian women with opinions. Cherry threatened them with legal action. Then they talked to a lawyer and backtracked as they realised they had no legal case.

If a group of evangelical Christians with appalling ideas book your room you have to legally accept that even if you despise their ideas. This is just a bunch of lesbians who want to hang out. There is no legal case at all for a public venue to banning them any more than there would be for banning a trans meetup.
