If you're GC, what should trans people actually do?

I'd like to understand what someone with gender critical views thinks trans people should do.

Maybe let's make it specific with a couple of famous examples: Laverne Cox (trans woman), and Elliot Page (trans man).

Imagine you had it exactly your way. What should those human beings, who feel and identify the way they do, do about every aspect like: names, pronouns, surgery, clothing, relationships, social spaces, work, sports.

How should Laverne speak about her own identity? Should Elliot not have had top surgery?

I'd really like to understand what the world looks like for trans people if we carry GC views through to their end points.

Elliot identified at age 3 that he felt male.

How does a child come up with such an idea? Most of the reports that I've read where children have supposedly 'identified' as one sex or the other have referred to toys or clothes.

In my house, children were allowed to wear what they wanted (within reason) and play with whatever toys they pleased.

Hi OP, I’m a teacher (secondary).

My main concern around gender ideology is twofold:

  1. Safeguarding. ANY loophole (e.g. self-ID) is the antithesis of safeguarding. I cannot in good conscience support self-ID because untrustworthy people will inevitably exploit that loophole. It’s unacceptable. Note that I haven’t even mentioned ‘trans’.
  2. Autistic children (ime and according to recent studies) are many, many times more likely to identify as the opposite sex, because they usually have limited cognitive flexibility and are therefore more likely to believe that gender stereotypes are ‘a rule’ that must be followed. I do not support the push to transition autistic children, who might have found other (safer?) ways of expressing themselves previous to this ideology permeating the internet.

I hope this makes sense, please feel free to question anything you’ve read.

@AmaListening Can you say what you mean? Most of the opinions on here strike me as pretty mainstream. Basically-live and let live, but there are a few issues that need to be ironed out which require give and take on both sides.

I have someone a lot closer to home to think about.

OP what do you think Laverne whosis and Elliot Page should do?

This is exactly what I'm thinking through. I'm reading Pageboy, Elliot Page's memoir, at the moment and wondering at various points: okay, so what should he do about X? Elliot identified at age 3 that he felt male. I have a 3 year old son so I'm imagining what that must have been like for Elliot.

How would you describe your usual everyday world?

This is an excellent thread full of simple, rational and measured responses. I'm not sure it's played out in the way the OP wanted. I hope it's given some readers new insights into the subject.

Exactly this. I wasn't expecting it to play out a certain way, and I wasn't looking for any gotchas. Just to understand viewpoints I don't usually hear.

Colour me utterly shocked the OP hasn’t been back. Are the screen shots on twitter yet?

I'm here. This thread contains so many interesting POVs that haven't showed up in my usual everyday world so I'm reading and contemplating.

Some people see women as an amorphous source of unconditional love and support, I guess. We are not really humans who may have our own suffering, wants, or preferences. We are just here to service the men and put them first, always.

ArabeIIaScott · 11/08/2023 16:33

I'm still pretty stunned that anyone would suggest that rape survivors are in some way obliged to provide their presence to validate a male's feelings.

But I suppose this is how Mridhul Wadhwa is able to suggest that traumatised women need to be 're educated' out of their 'bigotry'.

Froodwithatowel · 11/08/2023 16:19

Good point Arabella

It should also be noted that the woman in question, a rape victim in need of the LA and tax payer funded services this charity has been commissioned to provide, is not asking for the existing women's group to be changed from mixed sex to single sex. She merely asked for an additional female only group to be added to the three currently in existence that are accessible to male people.

This was regarded as unacceptably distressing and unsafe for male people.

It is not women who wish to deprive other people of resources, or have everything for themselves regardless of impact on others.

castlesandsand · 11/08/2023 16:19

Ok, so in your ideal world, where would Laverne Cox go to the toilet, if out in public?

Toilets are designed and engineered around sex and the biology/mechanics surrounding this. This is why the male sex toilets has urinals and female sex toilets do not.

Toilets are a place for dealing with a bodily function, not to indulge in gender experimentation.

Otherwise I am not interested in their gender choices, pronouns etc. If they are happy great, but I do not need to be constantly have their gender choices slapped in my face. Neither do I need the associated threats and actual incidents of violence & insults because I do not find their life choices fascinating.

ArabeIIaScott · 11/08/2023 16:10

Froodwithatowel · 11/08/2023 14:52

As pp have said: you've been misinformed.

Leverne and any other male rape victim needing support services would have no less than three different accessible groups they could choose from to find the one that best met their needs.

The woman taking the charity to court merely wants one single group that she can access at all. This is not provided, and she is left with nothing, because the trans activists involved refused to provide a female only group - even in another building or place in the town - because it's mere existence upset male users. (Who already had three options they could choose from.)

Where do you think women should go for support?

No one here wishes to see TQ people without equality of resources. Do you wish the same equality for all women?

Of course many services offer one to one counselling. But this is presumably no use to a male who requires the presence of women, for whatever reasons.

What does the word ‘woman’ mean if it’s not related to biology? I’ve never seen a convincing answer to this either. Our visitors usually just call it a dog whistle and leave; but it’s a genuine question

An interesting thought experiment is to ask why we would have words such as 'women' and 'men' at all if they were not based on biological sex.

The concept of gender identity (the unfalsifiable secular-religious belief in a gendered soul) doesn't make sense if it's not propped up with the cis-construction, because only by forcing everyone to pretend to have the gendered soul is it universal enough to replace biological sex in laws etc.

So people who don't believe in the gendered soul but base being 'woman' or 'man' on the sex of their body are just told that they are wrong, that they do possess a gendered soul but because it just happens to match their sex they don't notice this!

A clever device. It retains the necessary foundation for transitioning of all types by keeping biological sex but it also discards it by that cis-construction! It works very well as long as nobody is allowed to ask what 'woman' now might be, and hence the dog whistle -accusations.

"Where are all the trans women who just hang out in jeans and hoodies like about 80% of the women I know"

Thing is- I am prepared to believe that there are plenty of them. They are just, quite sensibly, keeping their heads down.

Where are all the middle aged trans men?

Stephen Whittle!

And as I discovered listening to Front Row yesterday, Italian film director Emanuele Crialese.

But I can't think of a middle aged woman who suddenly transitioned (except for Amanda jette Knox Grin )

I have never seen answer that is convincing. So, I would love to see this answered too.

MenWearOrnaments · 11/08/2023 15:39

I think the whole ideology needs to be dismantled.

In law, repealing the GRA and correcting any birth certificates that have been altered using this law. Removing the gender reassignment protection from the EA.

In media, removal of the IPSO regulations that prevent news outlets from reporting in terms of sex.

In schools, teaching about gender identity ideology only in RE lessons, and absolutely not as if its factual.

In medicine, a ban on any 'gender-affirming' care for children, and massively restricting this for adults to be heavily therapy-centred instead.

And so on and so forth. It's harmful and is a regressive step back to a society where conservative gender stereotypes are imposed.

Don’t call themselves a lesbian if they are biological male who has a sexual attraction to women. Don’t pressurise lesbians into sex. Respect the need for single sex spaces, sports etc. don’t describe not being able to compete in women’s sports as genocide.

SunnyEgg · 11/08/2023 15:24

The other thing is women don’t need to do anything when it comes to men

It’s for their own sex class to find solutions. Not us

Elliot Page - yes, fine, as others have said, Page is female and I frankly feel sorry for Page.

Rape services - you need to read the full story of Sarah's lawsuit. Iirc - the centre provided a women's session, a men's session and a mixed session. Sarah went to the women's session and found a person there who looked entirely male in men's clothes etc - but nothing would be done about it as the centre had to assume this person had special secret lady feelings inside else this person wouldn't have gone along to the women's session. I don't even think this person even contributed - just listened to the women's stories. So the point is - when you have policies like this, you aren't just inviting in post-operative transexuals who are in genuine need of the service, you are also opening the door to any man and backing yourself into a corner of being able to question any of them. Read up on what actually happens when these policies are in place - there's an article called "protecting men at the women's shelter" which makes pretty grim reading - Google it.

What should trans ppl do - imo, they should receive mental health treatment. I think it's unethical for doctors to operate or prescribe hormones for this reason. I do not believe a person can be born in the wrong body. I also note that the vast majority of those under the "trans" umbrella are not even making any modifications anyway - in which case, why do they need to be waving their cocks around in the ladies changing rooms?

Just to repeat this

ThomasinaLivesHere · 11/08/2023 15:20

@vibecheck How should women be defined if biology isn’t important and what would be the point in the category? I just don’t understand how it’s relevant having such categories if biology isn’t the reason behind it. Otherwise it’s surely just stereotypes of what men and women do.
