This shows the arrest of a teenage autistic girl by about 5 police officers. From what I can make out it is for a 'hate' crime. She apparently said a police officer was a Lesbian. Her Nan is a lesbian - that police officer is like my Nan.

I cannot comprehend the mindset of these officers.

The video looks horrific but it is heavily edited presumably by the woman who is holding the camera while mouthing off at the police.

We don't know what happened prior to this. We have no clue why the person is being arrested. Something led to 6 police officers attending which suggests they are expecting violence.

Hopefully the investigation will get to the bottom of it.

Mouthing off?

Have you been outside lately?

Someone on twitter said the police woman looks like Conan O'Brian and now I can't unsee it.

I'll report myself for hate speech...

Does this mean that Actual Nanna Lesbian also looks like Conan O’Brian and if so, can Actual Nanna L now sic the West Yorkshire Police on the twitter person?

There were two meltdowns. The policewoman had a meltdown when she heard a vulnerable young person suggest that she might be a lesbian. A professional policeperson wouldn't have had that meltdown but, given that she did, her partner should have managed her down. But, rather than behave professionally, the original meltdown was encouraged. This led to the unfortunate young woman's meltdown which gave
WYP the excuse they needed to act like complete Twunts.

I disagree with this. Meltdowns in autism are uncontrollable and not a choice. The police officer chose to abuse her power and commit a hate crime against a vulnerable autistic youngster for the "crime" of saying a slightly awkward comment. Her power-tripping tantrum is not comparable to an actual meltdown.

I have no idea why they couldn't have written down a note in their little notebooks and picked up the matter in the morning when she was sober and not in such a state.

Either they could have attended the house or asked her to come in voluntarily. What on earth was she dragged down to the station for, when she was already safe in her own house in the care of her Mother?

What possible good did that do, except a vindictive Punishment By Procedure?

which is make no mistake, exactly what this is. A weak move by a weak person, who lost their shit over nothing and abused their power.

This! So much this!

My eldest (a boy) had a terrible time when puberty hit as it made his autistic meltdowns seem really scary (he went from little boy to over 6 ft within a single summer). We had police involvement three times and they were truly excellent with him. The one time he was arrested and driven away from the family home they immediately made arrangements for my best (male) friend to be his approved adult and released him to stay overnight with said friend within an hour or two.

They then made arrangements for my son to attend a Youth Offending Team appointment, which wasn’t in the police station but in a neighbouring building, and the YOT referred him for Multi Systemic Therapy via the NHS (something we wouldn’t have been able to access without the police involvement).
He’s 23 now and has no other contact with the police (except when they returned a lost wallet!)

The police are actually able and capable of being really helpful with autistic teens, shame this particular bunch was so power-mad and ableist because any parent of an autistic child who has seen that footage will be thoroughly put off from contacting police themselves in future.

Which ultimately will be bad for the parents and autistic teens who would actually benefit from a little police involvement (as we did) and bad for society as a whole because being able to trust the police is part of a functioning, democratic society.

Pack in.

There is NOTHING in that video to indicate anything other than an overwhelmed child.

If it takes 5 officers to handle that they are not fit for purpose and should be sacked.

Sorry - quote function fail that was to Aaron

They are treating her in a disproportion way and I belive she may have been drunk.

Urgent reviews and training should be triggered and they all need to understand different disability. What an unnecessarily traumatic experience all around.

I'm furious.
If there are any police reading this thread, this is why so many people have a problem with you.

They’ll all be on the Reddit thread (shared further up) congratulating each other.

I've only just seen this. It's absolutely horrific. I actually can't believe how they've treated her. Thank God it's on camera.

This really is so distressing.

It is very distressing and frightening. As PP have said imagine what it would be like if the police routinely carry guns here. Not one of those officers in attendance have any sense of proportionality.

Once upon a time in a land far away I had a drunk autistic meltdown and called several police officers that were trying to help me "a bunch of effing cnuts", I have no idea why I did that... I was drunk and mid-meltdown.

They said "well isn't that charming language for a young lady" or something and proceeded to delivery me home to my rather bewildered housemates.

Because... proportionality? It probably helped that I was (reasonably) well-spoken and formally dressed (had got raging drunk at a black-tie event) at the time.... but I don't know that.

That video was extremely distressing. I can't imagine what the girl could possibly have said to justify that response. They've responded as if she was a knife-welding maniac. It's rediculous.

Sunnava · 11/08/2023 07:49

This video is one of the most upsetting I’ve seen. The officers are grossly homophobic and ableist (and sexist to boot, with 7 hulking male officers intimidating and cornering a young girl in her home). WY Police need to be sued to this heavens for two hate crimes against protected classes. To hell with them. This should not be buried.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 11/08/2023 07:49

If I were a police officer and I dropped what I was doing to rush to the aid of a colleague calling for backup, only to find said colleague in a strop about a terrified child hiding in a cupboard, I'd be really pissed off with said colleague.

The officer may have been additionally outraged by being compared to a lesbian nana - one of those nasty older type of witches, you know. An unbearable concept for a young woman of that mindset.

Probably a TERFY old lady too <spits>

BlackeyedSusan · 11/08/2023 07:47

It's difficult to parse with so much going on in the video but I think the mother at one point made reference to her being brought home earlier.

Perhaps this young girl had needed assistance earlier in the day - an autistic meltdown whilst out somewhere? Maybe the police visit started as a follow up check?

I think only two officers were present originally before back up was called and the back up was requested because they wanted to arrest her for the lesbian Nan comment.

If this is all as bad as it looks it should be a teaching moment for police forces. Mandatory training (Oliver McGowan) is being implanted for the entirety of health and social care. I think the police should be next.

Absolutely need autism training for police.

That young lad who has a record for asking whether someone is a man or woman needs his record wiped clean as well. Definitely would contribute to a crowd funder for that.

DerekFaker · 11/08/2023 07:46

The mother wasn't 'mouthing off' she was advocating for her child.

Mousehoel · 11/08/2023 07:31

Not really - you are encouraged to shout for assistance if situations go beyond your control.

Would calling for assistance because you overheard an autistic teenage girl saying you looked like a lesbian be reasonable though?

Would this particular scenario, which, however you look at it, is an overreaction, be deemed suitable measures by the police?

If I, a member of public, phoned the police because I overheard someone saying something about me, would they come out and assist me? If they did would that be considered reasonable use of police time?

slore · 11/08/2023 07:21

I would bet money that the hateful ableist policewoman is a lesbophobic non-binary or pansexual, and is projecting her own homophobia onto the girl.

slore · 11/08/2023 07:19

Is it possible for members of the public to report this as a hate crime? This is definitively an ableist assault and harassment, along with false arrest. Abusing, threatening, ganging up on and harassing a girl with impaired social skills for having impaired social skills is the definition of a hate crime. As is purposefully manhandling a girl with scoliosis after being told this would cause her pain.

When I tried to report on WYP own website, it says you need permission from the victim and their name and area.

Also, I have archived West Yorkshire Police's victim-blaming and disparaging statement, in case they try to change it:

There is some debate on Twitter over whether the insult was being called Nanna or lesbian with posters referring to Nanna lesbian. Though PC Poface is also excellent.

Teentaxidriver · 11/08/2023 02:52

I think the final shot of the lesbian police officer (aka victim of hate crime) does not show an individual reflecting on the enormous mess she has created instead it is designed to show how traumatised she is. Except she is a poor actress so her stimulation of emotion seems false and staged. I despair of the British police; no interest in solving real crime, instead driven by divisive ideology and populated by officers with a grudge to bear.
