This is outrageous - medical paper argues that wanting healthy, undeformed babies should be "queered"

So shocked I'm beyond words. I read on Twitter this morning that a paper, in a mainstream medical journal published by Elsevier, says:

"The authors argue that “gendered” pregnancy care is too focused on helping women have healthy babies, and that it might be okay for transmen to continue taking testosterone during pregnancy despite the known health risks to the fetus and effects on its normal development. The desire for “normal fetal outcomes,” according to the authors, is rooted in a problematic desire “to protect their offspring from becoming anything other than ‘normal’” and “reflect historical and ongoing social practices for creating ‘ideal’ and normative bodies."

The queer lobby must really, really hate children.

What did Elsevier think they were doing by publishing this? They should be called out for this very hard.

The point made over and over again in the paper, is the LACK of factual medical information available for trans contemplating pregnancy , about the effects on the baby of taking T, before during or after pregnancy. Read the comments of medical advisers dealing with them.

What's needed here IS proper medical research, not kneejerk reactions or anybody's propaganda.

How many times in history, has society been misled by misinformation about womens bodies; our autonomy denied and abused on moral and religious grounds.

This paper is just MORE of the problem, not a solution to it!

thankfully many of the transmen interviewed seem to be thoughtful and responsible, unlike the authors.

What percentage of the women who give birth each year identify as trans? How many of these would be willing to enter a medical study and answer questions honestly that might not give the "trans joy" results they want to hear? What are the chances of these numbers being statistically significant?

Yes. But it is wholly unethical to experiment on infants (or even foetuses, surely after the age of an embryo that can be destroyed). So, how does society get that conclusive information using humans?

So, these female people are arguing that their infants should be the experiments?

I agree that more research is needed. And yes, 'proper medical research'. But NOT at the expense of exposing children to these experiments. And nobody, just nobody, should be celebrating a mother who does this.

Some of the Authors:

Carla A. Pfeffer - Transgender Pregnancy Research funded by the “Economic and Social Research Council in the UK”

Damien W Riggs - transactivist

Ruth Pearce - trans-identified male “feminist” researcher.

I’m done - here is a presentation of this paper from the lead author:

There's not enough popcorn in the known universe to feed us when we watch the class actions unfold in a few years.

I truly believe this period will be looked at in total exasperation by future generations.

There is an absolute glut of this kind of guff.

Makes it extremely time consuming to find factual, medical information as first you have to discount paper after paper that looks to be on the subject but is really about ‘normativity’ and ‘inclusion’ and ‘queering’.

Ok good! Because I don't think there are sanitary bins in the other toilets.

I’m sure there are at Sally Hines’ university!

ScrollingLeaves · 18/07/2023 14:20

Imagine a similar article putting forward the argument that banning thalidomide is pandering to the misplaced, and wrong, desire for ‘normal’ babies.

Slothtoes · 18/07/2023 14:17

I agree with you Ballerina but I’m happy to hold up the mirror of cultural appropriation and colonising right back at these blokes. It is what they’re doing.

BadNomad · 18/07/2023 14:15

NicCageisnotNickCave · 18/07/2023 14:12

Don’t panic, friend!

Clearly you must go in loo for us Ovary-people and ignore the silly posters who say PCOS = inter/third sex.

Ok good! Because I don't think there are sanitary bins in the other toilets.

Slothtoes · 18/07/2023 14:15

Froodwithatowel I’m really sorry to hear that.

Slothtoes · 18/07/2023 14:14

Rosiesmydog Flowers I’m so sorry for your loss.

Waitwhat23 · 18/07/2023 12:41

From what I've seen of it, it's a mix of the whole 'sex is a spectrum' bullshit promoted by very dubious researchers and a group of 'not like other girls' navel gazers who have realised that non binary identities don't have quite the same cachet anymore so have decided to use their not a DSD condition to identify under the umbrella. It's incredibly insulting to those who do have DSD's.

Verity (the main PCOS charity in the UK) have already had to make statements to make it clear that PCOS is not considered an 'intersex' condition.

Thanks. It’s all so beyond stupid and insulting. The same crew who’ll be banging on about cultural appropriation and ‘colonisers’ no doubt.
As if it’s not distressing enough to have the issues associated with PCOS without having your womanhood called into question.

NicCageisnotNickCave · 18/07/2023 14:12

BadNomad · 18/07/2023 14:10

I have PCOS. Which toilet am I supposed to use? 😩

Justnot · 18/07/2023 14:11

So I’ve just had a quick root around on Wikipedia - as we know it is all about the trans - not one mention of PCOS being intersex on the intersex pages or the dsd pages or the pcos pages - one entry saying that some PCOS sufferers can get Clitoromegaly on the page about it but nothing on the intersex/dsd/pcos pages - just wanted to make that clear to Hen

lying bullshitters - they just want claim it so they can up the numbers as so many women suffer from it - saw one claim on an intersex site saying 1 in 90 people have an intersex condition

BadNomad · 18/07/2023 14:10

Froodwithatowel · 18/07/2023 13:55

And as always, in every single stupid idea from this critical theory:

  • Why should we abandon all boundaries, make this group of society suffer x and stop having any conscience about it while pretending it's a good thing?

  • So that T people don't have to hear the word no.

Froodwithatowel · 18/07/2023 13:53

There's pomo ridiculous bullshit and then there's psycopathy. As a society it's time to not get the two confused.

I'm disabled, by a genetically inherited condition. I will die of it. It is not some rich experience of diversity that could be wished away by others seeing me in a rosy glow of accessible heaven. It's crippling. It's painful. It is quality of life destroying. It's made me unemployable and destroyed my career, it's going to destroy my ability to live independently before much longer. I would not wish this on someone I hated, never mind think of it as a future I wanted for a child of mine. The sheer naive stupidity and egotism of this bullshit has to stop now.

potniatheron · 18/07/2023 13:48

Thelnebriati · 18/07/2023 12:16

Sociologists shouldn't be trying to make clever points, playing Devils Advocate. If they wanted to make a point about societies attitudes towards disabled people or pregnant women, there were better ways than this.

Human experimentation on a fetus is illegal. It should be illegal, and anything that serves to undermine that is unethical.

I don't think they're trying to "make a point about societies attitudes towards disabled people or pregnant women". You're imputing a decent motive to them when actually this is anything but.

What they are trying to do is justify women who want to keep taking testosterone when they discover they are pregnant, even though testosterone is a known teratogenic.

In order to do this, they are using the very laudable aims of disability activists and distorting them to provide a beneficent sounding smokescreen for their own sinister, selfish stance.

It is emotional manipulation on the highest level, as are many TRA activist stances.

Flowers

I’m sorry - anything I could type here seems completely inadequate.

I suspect these authors are able to be so cavalier about ‘queering’ the bodies of children because they have absolutely no clue of the realities of raising a child with special needs and/or life limiting/life threatening conditions.

NotTerfNorCis · 18/07/2023 13:40

Just your everyday academic.

This is outrageous - medical paper argues that wanting healthy, undeformed babies should be "queered"
user123212 · 18/07/2023 13:30

oh god. so we go from one extreme of "don't even take painkillers!" to "don't worry, a few fatal defects aren't anything to worry about". WTF

Musomama1 · 18/07/2023 13:23

Totally effed up point of view.

We take pains to give birth to healthy children, for their sake, because they have a life beyond being a prop for their parent and deserve the healthiest body that we can naturally give them.

I'd wager the author is healthy and normative - all thanks to their birth mother, why aren't other unborn children allowed the same advantages?

This Is an utterly dark take and ethically bonkers.

LostBiro · 18/07/2023 13:17

PCOS is an "intersex" condition- I thought I'd heard it all but there's always more, isn't there.

I was diagnosed in my 20s with PCOS. Took metformin (a diabetic drug, not female hormones Hmm) for a while then stopped. Conceived my children without any sort of medical intervention. There is nothing ambiguous about my sex whatsoever.

Man this has wound me up. Such bullshit merchants.
