And I'm off to Cornwall, where I will be searching out saffron buns.

IcakethereforeIam · 11/07/2023 14:33

I think somewhere has opened in Saundersfoot that's riffing on Welsh cakes. I'm off to Pembrokeshire soon, and I'm going to check it out. And graffiti some pebbles.

I feel very sad, because I've just started a keto diet, because of high blood pressure and being a fat knacker.

You are all torturing me with talk and pictures of lovely cakes.

sniff

I am in similar situation... it's fine.... go and look at Nigella's olive oil chocolate cake with almond meal. It ought to come with 'evil' written on it, tis fantastic.

Chersfrozenface · 11/07/2023 14:30

I mean who puts Apple's in a cake?

There's a traditional variant on Welsh cakes where you put in grated apple instead of currants (cheaper, what with apples being grown locally, unlike grapes).

Speaking of Welsh cakes, anyone who ever visits Cardiff, go to Bakestones in the indoor market. Drool!

Jaffa cakes are identified as biscuits in my supermarket. But are they cakes? And if they are biscuits then is the dunking of Jaffa cakes in tea acceptable?

Whether they're biscuits or cakes, they're still sinful. In fact, I'd add anything chocolate orange flavoured to the pyre.

Boiledbeetle · 11/07/2023 14:19

IcakethereforeIam · 11/07/2023 14:02

Jaffa cakes are abos (assigned biscuit on shelf(shelf id?)) but went to court and got a crc (cake recognition certificate) like tea cakes (no cake without the tea) but not tea cakes that, I think, are a fruity bread roll.

Oh I didn't realise you had an ology in cakes as well! You truly are the font of all cake related knowledge although your questioning on the standing of Apple cake makes me wonder if you acquired your ology by nefarious means. I mean who puts Apple's in a cake? That's not an actual thing. Is it?

(Poor Nancy she'll be checking out the social media etc on her news and is going to be so disappointed when she gets to mumsnet!)

I've also read the phrase 'leftover roast potatoes'. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yeah that's as likely as left over Yorkshire puddings and left over gravy.

As if that's ever happened in my house!

Shelf id! Grin So no dunking with a crc.

My MiL made a wedding cake once for a family member, so quite an important gig as cakery goes. It was one of them there red velvet things. She decided to make it without eggs and regular flour so that she could 'try some of it' as she'd put herself on a strange diet. Apparently the bride and groom were made aware of this the day before but went 'wet lettuce'.

Adult DSD and I were sitting next to each other at the wedding reception as we tried it, and let's just say that the experience of trying to chew and swallow one mouthful of this turgid loam while still smiling politely brought us closer together in adversity.

Feminist moral-of-the-tale. This perfectly illustrates female socialisation: smile and try to be polite, even when you are being served up something revolting.

Turgid Loam cake is hugely underrated.

Please explain "too much cream"?

I believe it's the mythical cousin of the equally mythical "Leftover Wine." Honestly, some people will believe anything.

😂

We did a de facto 'cake survey' a few weeks ago. More people made lemon drizzle than anything else but chocolate still topped the sales stakes. Gluten free was over catered for. All cake was consumed and no cake was wasted as part of this experiment.

But to ensure the information is as up to date as possible it's best to repeat the survey on a daily regular basis surely!

Now I really want some lemon drizzle cake…

RebelliousCow · 11/07/2023 12:48

Why are people talking about cake?

To actually answer your question. There can be many reasons, but i find it tends to be where there is a lull on the information coming in with regards to the thing the thread is about. So whilst we are in a holding pattern we talk about food.

IcakethereforeIam · 11/07/2023 13:25

Fat rascals (although I think it'll be 'bastards' going forward).

@Boiledbeetle it's the icing, far, far too sweet. I'm the only person in my house who likes coffee, must pop round to Sainsburys.

I had something once called 'war cake', apologies for the dreadful cod Geordie accents we adopted while ordering this.

Froodwithatowel · 11/07/2023 13:20

Isn't there a kind of mix of rock cake and scone called yorkshire fat bastards or something?

I really relate to them, but I feel pretty sure they've got all kinds of power points in the D&D cake stakes.

IcakethereforeIam · 11/07/2023 13:19

Coffee and walnut is my sister's favourite. I have a soft spot for Battenburg, I like deconstructing it when I was a child.

Apple pie isn't even a cake! I think apple cake would be more popular if it was better known.

Boiledbeetle · 11/07/2023 13:19

MagpiePi · 11/07/2023 13:15

Battenberg is the cake of the devil, and not in a Devil's Food Cake type of way.

Who is standing up for coffee and walnut cakes? The most oppressed and marginalised cakes in the cake shop.

Usually I stand up for the coffee and the walnuts. However Sainsbury's currently have a summer edition vanilla latte cake which sits next to those and the carrot cake (is it because you don't think vegetables should be in cake @IcakethereforeIam or is it just an irrational hatred?) And the vanilla latte cake is so nice that I reckon with a bit more practice i could eat the whole cake in one sitting.

You're safe. When they realised it was a woman trying to report a woman they hung up.

Phew.

(Takes Ben's wren off speed dial.)

I am vaguely amused that here we are in clown world and we're not taking it seriously enough .....

As an exclusively same sex attracted biological natal female (I think those words haven't been wholly mugged of all meaning yet, I used to be just a lesbian)

cake is a much, much nicer thing to be talking about than the hell of Stonewall speaking for/against/over me. Largely about how cock would do me so much good in making me a more acceptable human being that serves male interests properly.

Anyway, Beetle's reported me for hate crimes against drizzle cakes, so I might as well enjoy myself and make some cup cakes for the keystone cops and the fox botherer when they arrive panting on the drive with scolds' bridles in hand. It's not even like these days there's any ducking stools locally, you have to feel for the poor twits.

You're safe. When they realised it was a woman trying to report a woman they hung up.
