It's OK StephanieSuperpowers I went to B&Q this morning. 😍

StephanieSuperpowers · 16/06/2023 16:31

You have to wait 48 hours to know if you're allowed in their shops? That's fantastic customer service.

Redshoeblueshoe · 16/06/2023 15:59

I messaged Wickes yesterday to ask if it is true that I'm not allowed in their shops any more. I've had an email saying they will reply within 48 hours.

If I worked in the complaints department at Wickes I think I'd be getting a sick note for next week, and spend the time job hunting

HirplesWithHaggis · 16/06/2023 15:46

A member of my extended family works in HR for B&Q. A couple of years ago they were rewriting some staff handbook to be more trans friendly, then the Forstater judgement came through. She raised the matter with bosses, and the rewrite stopped. So that's something.

DialSquare · 16/06/2023 15:28

Bugger. There was supposed to be a gif there!

Wickes is expensive and not that good IMO. I use Toolstation as my first choice but have just found out they are owned by Travis Perkins, who also own Wickes.

Screwfix are owned by B&Q, but Screwfix and Toolstation were started by members of the same family.

You can’t win!

Wickes was spun off by Travis Perkins . Tool station is not part of Wickes anymore, and have moved out of the stores. So you’re alright there ( love the catalogue from TS, so much stuff you never knew you needed)

RedToothBrush · 15/06/2023 18:18

HAHAHAHA thats a fairly accurate description of my local Wickes.

Its not next to Aldi though. I think its next to some carpet place or bed place that has gone under about three times and just starts up again as if nothing has happened.

No idea why my post was deleted. I just said that our local Wickes was not as clean and the staff not as well informed as the brand spanking new B&Q opposite.

Oh and that it was less frequented by trade buyers now that Tool Station has been moved out after the demerger from Travis Perkins.

Poor Joe Wicks is getting some grief from dyslexic builders at the moment.

🤣🤣🤣

DirtyDuchess · 16/06/2023 14:51

I've just emailed Wickes, who have been calling and emailing to follow up on a kitchen measure up and design from a few weeks back. I basically told the lovely lady that in light of the COO's statement this week I would not be choosing Wickes for the refurb and could she please pass my email on to the Head Office to ensure that they can log my reason why not.

LonginesPrime · 16/06/2023 14:32

https://www.lbc.co.uk/news/trans-row-pride-month-wickes-ceo-outrage/

The combination of "No LGB without the T" and the CEO's comment that people who believe sex matters are barred from the store essentially equates to "no gays allowed".

Such a bizarre and aggressive stance.

And not particularly sensible, given that GNC women are far more likely to be spending the £££s with them than stereotypically 'girly' transwomen who reject 'manly' pursuits like DIY because it doesn't fit their meticulously curated aesthetic.

I've just sent their customer services a message

Am planning a five figure refurb (budget <five figure sum>) and am starting to price up the work and fittings. I would have looked in your stores but according to your COO I'm a bigot who's not welcome. Turning away customers because of their private beliefs is an odd business model, but whatever works for you, I guess.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 16/06/2023 12:12

It’s all so bonkers. I mean, no one wants to stop trans people from shopping in or working for Wickes. Why do so many companies get in such a mess about this?

Wanderingowl · 16/06/2023 11:36

Elon Musk has signalled that he's not impressed by Wickes COO's attitude. That will keep this trending a bit longer.

Chenford · 16/06/2023 11:16

Wickes came out to do a kitchen design for me a few weeks ago - their quote was £30k. We were just confirming building quotes before pressing ahead.

Good to know that they don’t want that money - wonder if the kitchen design consultant will be as happy to lose out on their commission?

We’re in no rush so I’ll check out Benchmarx - thanks @PriamFarrl

Veeta · 16/06/2023 10:57

I was going there next week to get flooring for the ground floor of my house. Not a chance I will be buying from them now, which I’m sure they will be happy to hear. Almost had to accept £1000s from a bigot! How fortunate that the COO got the message out and saved them the horror of having to help witches decide between laminate, vinyl and engineered wood.

Redshoeblueshoe · 16/06/2023 10:32

Cat3i if you want to show how virtuous you are you could just pop to Oxfam for a milk jug, but where I live they no longer exist

Chersfrozenface · 16/06/2023 10:25

Wickes closed the store on our side of the city (as PP have said, they were already having problems). The other store is the other side through horrendous traffic so we don't bother going. So I can't boycott them. Oh well, hey ho.

You'd have thought that the Chief Operating Officer would have more important things to worry about than misgendering etc. The whole company has been on a downturn for three years and this won't exactly help, telling 90% of his customers not to shop there.

I know.

I wonder how shareholders are feeling this morning, after a dire few years, shares are down another 4% today.
