Adult son's voting intentions-a little shocked.

My son lives in Rosie Duffield constituency. We live in a nearby constituency where they weigh the Conservative votes rather than count them. I've been reminding him that he really must get on the electoral register where he lives-he's a very political person and a vociferous left winger. He's been putting it off-he still uses this as his permanent address. Yesterday he finally told me that he's intending to stay on the register here and vote for a local independent. He says that while he couldn't actually vote Tory, he'd rather the Tory candidate won than Duffield. I am quite shaken by this!

Because I assumed adult women might be interested in discussing the issue we have with active young people and how they are going to vote in the forthcoming general election, which is going to be very tight. It didn't cross my mind that he would be ridiculed. Maybe the Feminist board is not what it was.

How bizarre. The feminist board is exactly what it should be — pro-women and woman-centric. You've brought up a young man who, despite saying he's of the left, will vote right rather than vote for a woman upholding women's rights. How anti-women is that? And apparently you're not prepared to take even the smallest measure — making sure he votes from his own address — to distance yourself from him.

He's the problem, OP. He's a man who would have the word 'woman' mean nothing more than some vague concept to describe people who like wearing women's clothing. I know plenty of parents of young men (and young women) who are actively pointing out how misogynistic this kind of thinking is to their children. And some of them are paying the price for doing so.

Not you, obviously.

This.

Yes- of course he has to make his own choices. But he feels he can't vote for Duffield because she is a TERF. Incidentally, he is neither an idiot or a Men's Rights Activist!

Well you may think he is not an idiot -I couldn't possibly say - but as he is calling RD a TERF I think we can comfortably surmise that he is indeed an MRA.

Pluvia · 30/04/2023 14:18

You are far more diplomatic than me, Beetle.

Thinking more carefully, does this offer a clue about all those male TRAs who turn out at JKJ's and other events? So many of the boys and men are middle-class and university educated and I've often wondered what their mums think of them deciding it's a good thing to attack women's rights. I've assumed they'd be appalled if they knew, but clearly not.

I think perhaps there's a clue there about why/ how he's turned out the way he has...

I didn't like to say.

@Boiledbeetle He still uses this as his permanent address. I'm fine with that- and I don't intend to change it because I don't agree with him on a point of principle!

Yes, but HE still needs to fill in the annual electoral form doesn't he?

Well in this regard he clearly is I'm afraid.

'I am quite shaken after finding out that my adult son will be voting for someone I don't approve of.' 😂😂😂

LMFAO!!! Grin Mumsnet really is the gift that keeps on giving some days! 😄

Only that not what she said at all.

She's shaken that a Labour supporter would rather the Conservative candidate won and is not voting Labour to enable that hope.

Labour seems to be driving voters away on both sides of the fence on this topic.

I think we could all LMFAO at Labour being the gift that keeps on giving in the last couple of years on this topic and I expect people such as yourself will ensure this continues right up to the election.

DojaPhat · 30/04/2023 13:51

OP, I really don't know why you'd proffer up your son for such mocking and ridicule on a thread like this. An idiot, a men's rights hypocrite and an example of the authoritarian schooling of young people which has robbed them of the ability to think critically? Confused

He's a Men's Rights Activist by default if he wouldn't consider voting for Rosie Duffield.

I'd contact the electoral register and say that he no longer lives at your address and give them his new address. He can vote for whoever he wants, but from his own address.

@2bazookas "Whoever told you that crap about uk votes being weighed not counted, was an irresponsible liar." 🤣🤣🤣Simply a figure of speech. Although they could, in this constituency. They could put up a monkey in a blue ribbon..... oh, shit, you're not going to take that literally too, are you?

Back in the constituency I grew up in, the phrase was "they could stick a red rosette on a monkey and it would get voted in". Damn near proved it too, with some of the candidates.

CurlewKate · 30/04/2023 13:41

I did post in "Feminism and Woman's Rights" didn't I? Phew-for a moment I thought I'd made a mistake.

That is YOUR responsibility, not his. Every year the householder is sent a form to confirm the named qualifying RESIDENTS of the property to the local Electoral Roll. You just tell them the truth, he is NOT a resident at your address. He will then be deleted from local electoral roll and it's up to him to re-register at his genuine address.

Whoever told you that crap about uk votes being weighed not counted, was an irresponsible liar.

If he uses the term terf as a pejorative then he absolutely is a men's rights activist.

Alas, you teach them, nuture them, then have to let them out into the wild.

fdgdfgdfgdfg · 30/04/2023 13:10

There will be a lot of young people who won't vote for Duffield, because a lot of young people really don't agree with us on the trans / women's rights debate.

If you're surprised by this then you need to engage with your kids more on this topic. DD has a trans best friend, and despite loving HP has been whinging about JKR recently. She was rather surprised when I didn't agree with her and we had a long conversation about it. Shes still somewhat on the fence but is currently listening to The Witch trials of....

If we want our kids to engage critically on this topic, and not just hear their friends opinions, then we need to talk to them. Especially sons, this doesn't affect them directly so we have to open their eyes to how it affects their mothers, their sisters etc.

Labour have totally put me off by posters suggesting Rishi Sumsk actively supports paedophiles. We don’t need that US style shit here.
No idea who to vote for..

That was incredibly nasty, I'd go as far as saying it was Trump-like, however it was widely condemned by many Labour Party members. I doubt it will happen again.

LBFseBrom · 30/04/2023 13:07

WhereYouLeftIt · 30/04/2023 12:11

So he's a "vociferous left winger" who won't vote for Labour because the candidate is Rosie Duffield. He'd "rather the [right-wing] Tory candidate won than [left-wing]Duffield".

He's really not left-wing at all then, is he, if he'd rather the Tory won than Labour, regardless of the candidate. He's a men's rights hypocrite. I can understand you being shocked.

I wouldn't go that far. I don't like the Tory government one bit and would never vote for them but it has to be said there are and have been some good Tory MPs by which I mean accessible and sympathetic to their constituents.
