Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Adult son's voting intentions-a little shocked.

My son lives in Rosie Duffield constituency. We live in a nearby constituency where they weigh the Conservative votes rather than count them. I've been reminding him that he really must get on the electoral register where he lives-he's a very political person and a vociferous left winger. He's been putting it off-he still uses this as his permanent address. Yesterday he finally told me that he's intending to stay on the register here and vote for a local independent. He says that while he couldn't actually vote Tory, he'd rather the Tory candidate won than Duffield. I am quite shaken by this!

They weigh votes instead of counting? What?!

Rockingcloggs · 30/04/2023 16:53

I'd be more concerned that your son calls free thinking women TERFs to be honest. Lots of us TERFs don't like it, yet I wear it like a badge of honour!

Pluvia · 30/04/2023 16:51

Yes, I am a feminist. I expected pro women, feminist responses and an interesting, robust discussion. What I didn't expect was to be told that if I had been a BETTER feminist, my adult children would not be involved in trans ideology. But mothers are always an easy target. Hey ho.

I'm not sure about being a better feminist. I'm just mindful that the minute women pointed out that your son is part of the anti-women's rights movement and thus a problem as far as most of us are concerned, you told us off for not responding better and more positively to you. Hence my follow-up posts trying to work out what you were looking for from a feminist board.

Flowerly · 30/04/2023 16:47

Having said this I know that this ideology is harmful and toxic and has a horrible herd mentality element to it. It's easier for people to go with the flow and many do.

Flowerly · 30/04/2023 16:46

Holly60 · 30/04/2023 16:04

Are you aware you are talking to someone regarding her son?!

How bloody rude.

He sounds like an MRA. The idiot thing - yep, I also think he sounds like an idiot. I wouldn't be happy if I had raised someone who thought so little of women.

CurlewKate · 30/04/2023 16:44

"At one point I said "But respecting trans rights in some contexts inevitably means disrespecting women's rights" and was met with a retort of "So?"" Mine would say that no it doesn't because TWAW.

At one point I said "But respecting trans rights in some contexts inevitably means disrespecting women's rights" and was met with a retort of "So?"

Reflective of the whole repellent movement.

CurlewKate · 30/04/2023 16:35

@AutumnCrow He knows there will be an excellent independent candidate in my constituency. And he minds very much that there is likely to be a tory candidate in his. He just feels that this particular ideology trumps that. As he said to me "You wouldn't vote for an anti Semite. It's exactly the same."

OP posts:
User165342 · 30/04/2023 16:34

He needs to vote in his own constituency, surely there must be more than 2 candidates.

Abacusporttaco · 30/04/2023 16:34

Whoever told you that crap about uk votes being weighed not counted, was an irresponsible liar.

Don’t think I’ve ever read such a self-confidently condescending statement, that was so hilariously wrong.

Ah, OK, I see what you're saying OP. He's banking on there being an excellent Independent candidate in your constituency in the next General Election, but not in his own constituency where he lives.

And in the meantime he doesn't care if where he lives gets a Tory MP.

Pluvia · 30/04/2023 16:25

CurlewKate · 30/04/2023 16:04

@Pluvia I don't think I've ever said this before-but I'm not really keen on having my parenting questioned by a stranger who hasn't tried it herself. This is not a simple issue-raising your children to understand and live by feminist principles does not mean they won't take on board trans ideology. If you do at some point have children, I wish you luck.

Fair comment. You can feel how you want — me too.

Would you call yourself a feminist, OP? I just find it a bit odd that you'd post on a feminist forum and then appear to be surprised when you get a feminist, pro-women's rights response.

CurlewKate · 30/04/2023 16:18

@AutumnCrow "So he's choosing to vote for the Party of Kemi Badenoch and Rishi Sunak?

That really doesn't compute for me"

No he's not. The reason he wants to vote from his old home is to vote for an excellent Independent candidate.

I'm curious to know why several posters think the Tories are going to win the next election? I mean obviously they might win, but that's not what the polls are saying.

The degradation of British values. A lot of people feel they don't recognise the country they once knew and loved. In the face of so much societal change the tories can offer a push back. If you look at the core tory demographic and the things that appeal to them, factor in all the other votes they'll hoover up along the way e.g. some women who are glad the tories know how biology works then chuck in the silent tories then you're good to go. I do think this time it might be hard to tell given the country is currently a bin fire but suffering is a national kink.

LBFseBrom · 30/04/2023 16:10

Curlew, we all worry about our children in some way or another, even when they are grown up. As long as we don't inflict our own worries on our offspring, that's OK. Better to talk about it somewhere like here.

There should be no judgement of you on this thread for what you have expressed.

AutumnCrow · 30/04/2023 16:09

ejbaxa · 30/04/2023 16:08

It's his decision. That's all there is to it.

CurlewKate · 30/04/2023 16:06

With a bit of luck he will have a permanent address soon and that part of the issue will be resolved. That does not take away from the fact that he and many other young people-who are natural Labour voters will be taking their votes elsewhere at the next election, and that is a terrifying thought.

He sounds like an idiot OP. RD is supposed to be a very good constituency MP isn't she? Plus she is brilliantly GC and we need more of her.

Are you aware you are talking to someone regarding her son?!

sevenbyseven · 30/04/2023 16:02

ImAvingOops · 30/04/2023 15:16

If he was mine, I'd get him taken off my address and registered for his own. I don't think people should be making choices about constituency representation for areas they don't actually live in.

This ^^ It's unethical, regardless of his politics.

All raised by headstrong women

They may have been headstrong but were they feminist? There's a world of difference.

AutumnCrow · 30/04/2023 15:46

If he's no longer a student, then he needs to sort his actual permanent address and council tax obligations out.
