The murderer who came in and killed 3 children and 3 adults is trans and called Audrey, I am confused as to their biological sex.

Does it matter!!! Three dead children and 3 dead adults. 102 mass shootings in America - this year.
Words fail me.

And yes, it really does matter,

Some of you seem to lack the ability to care about more than one thing at a time. There's no need to attack people who can handle more than one thought.

Why are the usually very vigilant mumsnet mods not deleting all the posts that are misgendering this trans man?

I've just reported someone saying 'it'.

It's dead interesting to see which threads are being heavily monitored and which are ignored.

It's almost as if trans men don't count.

Honestly there is some fascinating stuff coming out with this horrific incident in terms of issues around how seriously pronouns and media use of how to describe trans people in criminal incidents.

I noticed this reporting too. A trans'woman' sex offender is reported as a woman but a trans 'man' has so far not only been reported as a woman but numerous statistics have been thrown out all morning about the number of female perpetrators of this crime.

RIP to the victims.

I can’t get my head around anyone deliberately targeting children. It’s hard enough to understand why a man would do it, but to me, a woman acting this way goes against every instinct I have.

I agree. This entire thread is one of the most fucked up things I've read on here.

The shooter was a woman. It has been reported as such. And still an anti-trans angle is spun.

We are not those parents, and we can care.

MelsMoneyTree · 28/03/2023 11:34

I don't think it was about pronoun politeness. Or fudging statistics. Although the police and media regularly do both regarding trans crimes.
But in this case, it seems genuine confusion. The murderer still used both names - male and female - in the messages they sent minutes before the shooting. And the friend they messaged referred to the shooter with female pronouns.

I’m guessing that the parents who have lost children in this obscenity couldn’t give a shit what sex/gender issues their childs’ murderer had.

It was a POS!

ReunitedThorns · 28/03/2023 11:31

Whether it's for clickbait (or whatever) but there seems to be a general thing in the media to quickly attribute crimes to women.

A mtf criminal will be quickly referred to as female ("her penis" etc) to generate headlines, and this biological female shooter is referred to as female (not the self selected male pronouns), again to generate headlines.

I don't think it's wokery or political correctness, it's the revenue generating headlines.
The media will hide behind wokery as a reason to do it, but it's cynical and this case just points it out. There's nothing special about a male mass shooter, but there is with a female one.

So many evasive, mealy mouthed euphemisms. The attacker. The shooter. Haley. Identifies as transgender. What ?

It must be quite difficult actually , like writing an essay without using the letter E. An enviable skill to be sure ; but it is not journalism.

I think that’s why the UK media have adopted the American term ‘shooter’. How else are they going to term it - gunperson ?

I can't imagine what it's like being told your child has been slaughtered at school. But I'm guessing it's even worse if the information about the killer is garbled and contradictory, with people seeming to be more worried about pronoun politeness than actual reality. Just makes it even more of a shitshow.

Report I read said female living as a man (whatever that means). Terrible and unforgivable incident regardless. America is a very sick country.

That's kinda my point. It is, literally, an arms race that ends up with law enforcement killing its own populace. It's horrendous.

Yes I think it gets worse when the solution seems to be arm citizens even more as in pp

I think the term ‘arms race’ nails it. When American citizens try to justify private gun ownership they cite personal or family protection as the main reason. That sounds reasonable until you factor in the the calibre and types of guns on sale and easily obtainable. So you end up with Joe Public buying into the notion that their ‘protection’ has to match that of their perceived adversaries and Bingo - the ordinary man in the street is armed to the teeth with state of the art assault weapons. And all the while the powerful pro gun lobby, the NRA are happily displaying bumper stickers reading ‘I’ll give you my gun when you pry it from my cold, dead hands’. And that’s how it ends - usually when innocent people are dead. It’s madness.

mids2019 · 28/03/2023 11:19

I think the police dead named the perpetrator and journalists trying to cover this horrific incident reported what they knew quickly including the name and sex of the as shooter. There have obviously some editorial discussions since and the press (including BBC) are making decisions how to refer to the shooter to adhere to editorial policy including removing pronouns from reports and referring to name and omitting sex.

The incident highlights how difficult reporting becomes when there is so much mixed information on gender.

Nope. Not unless you can dismantle the NRA !!

390 million guns in circulation in the US in 2018.

they will never get all these guns off the street even if the NRA was dismantled

the numbers are just mind blowing

So so so awful. It's just about unimaginable here, but happens so much in the US that it's almost not shocking anymore.
Had she detransitioned?
No doubt there'll be TRAs & sympathisers pissed off that she's been 'misgendered'. "See what we have to face?"
No, this is what LITERAL violence looks like.

I remember the shock and disbelief after the events in Dunblane 1996 - 16 students and a teacher died. The UK hasn’t seen one since, because parents in Dunblane organised themselves and by the following year Parliament had banned private ownership of most handguns and semi automatic weapons, and introduced mandatory registration for shotgun owners. Something that gun control activists in the USA aren’t able to effectively achieve because they’re up against the NRA, whose reaction to the latest shooting is to suggest that school guards are armed. So the answer to the gun problem in their eyes - more guns !!

senua · 28/03/2023 11:06

MarshaBradyo · 28/03/2023 10:56

Can you imagine the intensity of facing a murderer who’s on a killing spree?

Not sure I blame them.

bubbles2023 · 28/03/2023 11:02

*It's confusing because the media seem to call male rapists 'she' when they identify as female but a female shooter 'she' when they identify as male.

It does look like bias but I'm sure it can't be.*

^^
That struck me. When a mtf trans person commits a serious crime, they're a 'woman' with she/her pronouns. When a ftm trans person commits a serious crime they're a woman.
